“It was a 27 year old male from VCU in Richmond who fell while hiking at Crabtree Falls, and unfortunately he didn’t survive the fall. The recovery was a pretty difficult one due to the terrain,” Nelson County Sheriff, David Brooks tells Nelson County Life Magazine.

Crews worked much of Saturday afternoon and evening to get the 27 year old body removed from Crabtree Falls where he apparently fell about 100 feet to his death after climbing out on a big rock. After the fall, others nearby called for help, but due to the terrain and difficulty in gaining access, it was tough getting the victim out.

Crews from Montebello, Wintergreen, and other area rescue squads assisted in Saturday evening’s incident.

NCL has been in contact with Nelson County Sheriff David Brooks and as soon as he has complete information, we will put it here.

Original Post:
NCL has received numerous inquires over the past couple of hours regarding what law enforcement & rescue vehicles may be doing at Crabtree Falls. Witnesses say they saw numerous emergency vehicles en route there and turned off at the falls and also on up 56 closer to Montebello.

NCL has learned that someone fell a considerable distance while hiking near the falls and crews have been working to get to the person.

We have limited information at this time, and are limited as to what we can post, but will add additional details later tonight as we can.

Wednesday started off with a little sunshine and cool, but quickly became cloudy, windy and warm as the day wore on. By late in the day just before dark, rains moved in the area. You can see the cars making their way along the wet roads last night in the photo above. Many locations picked up almost an inch before midnight with some additional rain and even some thunder in the wee morning hours. To date, March has been a good rain month with some of our NCL Weathernet Stations report in excess of 5 inches of rain for the month. This gives us a great start heading into and Spring and Summer!

By late evening last night a Wind Advisory CANCELLED @ 11:13 AM EDT was issued due to gusty winds across the area expected to remain in place for much of the day. You can always see the latest weather alerts affecting our area by looking at the RSS Weather feeds right under the cover photo, on the upper left.

Thursday may start with a sprinkle or two east of the BRP, but quickly end with clearing skies and sun moving in. But look for those gusty NW winds kicking up as high as 45 MPH. We’ll still manage to pull out the upper 50’s in many locations, it just won’t feel very warm with those strong winds. By Thursday night the winds settle down a bit, though gusts to near 30 are still possible before midnight.

By the weekend showers may move in Saturday but temps still mild in the 50’s and Easter looks dry for now with temps in the 50’s as well.

I do want to mention something a colleague of mine forwarded last night. Paul Luke, from up in the DC area, and I worked together in television news years ago back in the mid south, as well as weather. Paul noticed this mention in the NWS HYDROMETEOROLOGICAL PREDICTION CENTER discussion early Wednesday.

The photo at the top of today’s weather post is pretty much how the day ended Tuesday. Though we saw some hints of sunshine part of the day, clouds overall prevailed. The sun did come out long enough to warm things up near 60° for most folks.

To our west severe weather has been the story for much of Tuesday and Tuesday night. Flooding and tornadoes were all across the mid-south slowly marching to the east in our direction. There were some scattered showers overnight in our area, but nothing to be concerned with.

Wednesday will be another mostly cloudy day with noticeably warmer temps. I can’t rule out some scattered showers in the morning but the more significant rain will move in after lunch. By late afternoon into Wednesday night, heavier rains will fall and chances for thunderstorms move into the forecast. It will become windy as the the day wears on.

Though severe weather is a possibility as mentioned in the NWS Hazardous Weather Statement:

A STRONG COLD FRONT WILL MOVE ACROSS THE AREA LATE WEDNESDAY
AFTERNOON AND WEDNESDAY EVENING. AHEAD AND ALONG THE COLD
FRONT…SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS ARE EXPECTED. GIVEN STRONG WIND
FIELDS ALOFT…DAMAGING WINDS ARE POSSIBLE IN SHOWERS AND
THUNDERSTORMS. AT THIS TIME…THE MOST LIKELY TIME FOR SEVERE
WEATHER ACROSS THE OUTLOOK AREA IS EXPECTED TO BE BETWEEN 6 PM AND
11 PM WEDNESDAY EVENING.

A WIND ADVISORY MAY BE NECESSARY WEDNESDAY NIGHT INTO THURSDAY AS
WIND GUSTS MAY APPROACH 45 MPH.

It doesn’t appear Nelson will be in the bulls eye, but as always I’ll be watching and let you know. Any storms that form, gusty damaging winds would be the main threat.

After Wednesday night we’re quick to clear out and Thursday looks sunny right now for the first day of Spring. Temps will be in the upper 50’s both Thursday & Friday. Rain reenters the forecast again by Friday night into Saturday.

If you’re like most of us today, you’re getting a bit concerned about just exactly where your food comes from, not to mention how much it costs just to make the trip to pick it up! With gas over $3.00 a gallon that trip to the big grocery to save a few pennies doesn’t seem to make as much CENTS anymore! Ken and Yvonne Harris have the answer to both of those concerns. One, they either grow right on the farm or they buy as close to the farm as possible. And you don’t have to drive very far either. Looks like a sneaky leprechaun made his way into one of the classrooms over at Rockfish River Elementary School in Afton during St. Patrick’s Day! Students there in the photo at the top of today’s weather arrived Monday morning to find the green footprints across one of the desks! Mmmmm, maybe he was looking for “me” pot of gold coins! Actually folks at RRES had a great Career Day Monday where they learned all about different jobs they might one day grow up to be a part of. You can view the pics by clicking here.

And not to be out done on St. Patty’s, the crew over at The Hamner Theater in the RVCC had a St. Patrick’s Day Party, complete with food and lots of music. You can view all of the fun here! They always have lots of great events, so be sure to check out what’s happening on their site.

Yesterday was pretty uneventful weather wise. Temps weren’t cold, but it certainly wasn’t a very warm day either. Cool breezes made it feel a bit chilly unless you were out in the direct sunlight. By late afternoon, clouds began moving in and we ended the day mostly cloudy. Overnight you could call it mostly cloudy, with an occasional peek of stars now and then.

Today marks the beginning of some pretty dramatic changes for the next 24-36 hours. Tuesday will be mostly cloudy with temps about where they were Monday in the lower 50’s. The one thing that may change that is a developing warm front. If it get through the area we could see substantially warmer temps. By Tuesday night, showers and winds begin working in, we may actually see a sprinkle around dusk, but the more widespread showers begin after dark heading toward Wednesday morning.

Wednesday looks to be a rainy day with mild temps near 70° in spite of the rain and clouds. We could easily see wind gusts of near 40 MPH throughout the day.

There’s even a chance of thunderstorms later in the day and the slight potential for some of them to become severe by Wednesday night as mentioned in the Hazardous Weather Outlook:

GUSTY SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS ARE EXPECTED ALONG A SHARP COLD
FRONT WEDNESDAY NIGHT. LOCALLY DAMAGING WINDS MAY OCCUR WITH
THESE STORMS. A WIND ADVISORY MAY ALSO BE NEEDED WEDNESDAY NIGHT.

I don’t think we’ll see much in the way of severe weather as it looks like most of it will form east and south of Nelson, but it is worth a mention and we’ll keep an eye on it between now and then.

By Thursday skies begin to clear and temps cool a tad for the next several days. Light snow may actually reenter the forecast again by Sunday night into Monday. Not much to be excited about, but just a reminder that winter is still trying to kick Spring around just a little bit.

If you ever thought about being a florist, a firefighter, a plumber, a policeman, television reporter, or more, then Monday’s Rockfish River Elementary Career Day was the place to be. Students got the chance to see what all of the different professions were like, and got the chance to try out a few things themselves. you never know, they may be the ones we see doing those very jobs when they grow up!

On Tuesday, 3/18, the PTA is holding a spaghetti dinner at 5:30-6:30pm, followed by their meeting. Afterwards, the school’s hallways and gym will be opened for the Spring art Show and Focus on Science exhibits.

Youth Art Month is an annual observance that is held each March to celebrate the value of art education in our schools and to encourage public support for a full time, quality art program at Rockfish River Elementary. The Spring Art Show gives us a stage to showcase our students’ artistic talents and inform the public, our local, state and national officials about the value of art experiences in the lives of young people. Youth Art Month gives art programs a chance to shine and sends a message. Too often, the value of participation in the arts is underestimated. Art is a learning tool that reinforces other disciplines like reading, writing, social studies, science and even math. Art education develops self-esteem, an appreciation of the work of others, self-expression, cooperation and critical thinking skills.
