Slade Allen Woodson

I-64 gunman suspect Slade Allen Woodson

Updated 4:50pm

It looks like Slade Allen Woodson maintains a myspace page here and here (Hat tip: cVillian). Check out these pics via cVillian:

And notice the About Me entry in his “Boggin” myspace page:

Im just a country boy who keeps gettin his heart broken!!! Ive got my heart broken twice in less then a year… i dunno wat to do…. keep gettin my heart broke or stop caring!!! and i dont wanna stop caring…

And over at his other myspace page (“Who wants a good ‘ol country boy???”), his last login was March 26, 2008, the day of the I-64 shooting.
Updated 4:40pm

There’s been a lot of local chatter about the identity of the person shot as police entered the home at 6740 Yonder Hill Farm Rd. in Crozet this morning. Much of the speculation has centered around the notion that the person shot may be a second gunman involved in the I-64 case, of which Slade Allen Woodson is a suspect. We are told from reliable sources that the man shot is the father of the woman Woodson has been dating, though we have yet to independently verify this information. Police are remaining mum on the issue as the matter has been turned over to the VSP Police Shooting Investigation Team. The question still remains: Do police still think there may be a second gunman at large?

Updated 11:58am

Though the VSP says Woodson is from Afton, he may actually be from the Batesville area, parts of which overlap into the Afton zip code. Woodson was apparently on the track team at Western Albemarle High School and competed in the Region II Indoor Championship Feb. 16, 2005 at Fluvanna High School in Men’s Pole Vault (emphasis added):

Finals MEN'S POLE VAULT
 1. Stephen Thompson, Western Albe 14-06; 2. Chad Hardine, Broadway 14-0; 3.

More recently, Woodson competed in the VHSL Group AA State Meet held at Liberty University on March 3-4, 2006.

Here’s the official VSP news release.

Updated 11:08 am, Virginia State Police presser held by Col. Steve Flaherty, via LiveNewsCameras.com (Thanks P.L.!):

Shortly after 5am Albemarle Co police and Virginia State Police took 19-year-old Slade Allen Woodson of Afton, into custody. Officers entered a home in Crozet; 5 people were in the residence. Woodson is being charged on Waynesboro police warrants. He is charged with 1 felony count of destruction of property (DuPont Community Credit Union on Lucy Lane) and 1 felony count of shooting at an occupied residence on the 200 block of North Commerce Ave. in W’boro. Woodson is considered a suspect in the I-64 shootings but has yet to be charged.

As police were entering the home, they were confronted by an individual armed with a handgun and that indivdual was subsequently shot and taken to UVA Medical Center where he is currently being treated. No i.d. yet on person shot.

A 1974 AMC Gremlin, consistent with the vehicle shown in the bank surveillance video, was recovered on US 29 just south of the Greene County line.

Let’s see, $3.25 a gallon X a 15 gallon tank = $48.75 ! Wow, that’s just to fill up. Making that long trip to a city grocery is costing lots more these days, not to mention the worries over just where your food is coming from. You don’t have to worry over at Ken & Yvonne Harris’ a.m Fog on Route 151 at the Nelson-Albemarle County Line. They are as close to the farm as you can get!

Right now they’ve got; Asparagus, Lettuce, Cucumbers, STRAWBERRIES, strawberry onions (the best!!!), roasting potatoes, Idaho potatoes, carrots, green peppers, farm eggs, meat, & fresh baked bread.

And yea, they still have my favorite:
Local “Happy Steer” Hormone and Antibiotic Free Meat
-Local Hormone & Antibiotic Free Chicken

Not to mention all of the other vegetables, annual, and perennial plants along with lots of fruit trees ready for the spring planting! Spring is here!

And have you seen that new beautiful farm market going up, they are just days from opening, they’ll be featuring hot teas, coffee, muffins, and bread. They’re open now, but be looking for the grand opening of the new and larger farm market in just a few days!

Thursday ended up being a pretty nice day with most of the rain staying to our north. Some folks saw a few very light sprinkles, but overall it was a dry and fairly pleasant.

Friday will be even warmer than Thursday with some locations skirting, if not making the 80° mark. Don’t get to use to it though, we’ll be diving about 20-25 degrees for a high on Saturday & Sunday. But it’s an indicator that warmer weather is certainly just around the corner. We’ll also see chances for rain and even some scattered thunderstorms during the afternoon and evening before skies become partly cloudy Friday night.

By the weekend partly to mostly sunny skies prevail with cool temps for daytime highs. By early next week showers move back in with highs generally in the 60’s valley and upper 50’s to lower 60’s mountains.

Before I get off into the weather today, we want to send out a big congratulations to Jeff and Jan Vogelgesang, (her stage name is Jan Smith) of Heards Mountain. You heard a little of Jan’s singing at the start of today’s weather, we’ll have more in a few minutes. Jan and Jeff became the proud parents of a new baby boy this past Tuesday. Louis Edward was born at 11:09 AM Tuesday morning, and weighed a whopping 9 pounds! Know Jan’s glad to have that fellow out in the world! Congrats again to Jeff & Jan on their new addition! Yvette talked to Jan yesterday and she’s doing fine!

What a fantastic day Wednesday was! Temps warmed even a little higher than predicted into the mid 70’s for the valley and around 60° on the mountains. Speaking of the mountains, what a time they’ve had along the Blue Ridge Parkway on the Augusta side. A forest fire has been burning up there over the past day. Though it’s not affected anyone in Nelson the smoke sure has. For about as far east as you could go from the fires, you could see the smoke. The photo above is what it you saw just before dark Wednesday looking back toward the parkway from the Greenfield – Taylor Creek Road area. You read lots more about the fires by clicking on our original post here. One good thing that’s in the favor of the folks fighting the fires, is the fact we have higher humidities and some rain on the way in the next 24 hours.

Look for another mild day today with afternoon temperatures around the 70 degree mark, perhaps even warmer in areas that see ample sunshine. Clouds on the average, will be increasing throughout the day. Light sprinkles or even a renegade shower is not out of the question, but better chances for rain happen tonight into Friday. Even with the clouds and rain, temperatures hold up and stay mild through the period.

By the weekend, chances for rain diminish, but so do the temperatures, cooling to the 50’s once again for daytime highs.

Regional Current Surface Map via wunderground

Looking 12-24 Hours Ahead

Your Nelson County Life custom area forecast including: BRP, Afton, Love, and Tyro

Thursday:Becoming mostly cloudy throughout the day. Hazy from BRP fires. Warm with light showers.
* Highs Valley: 68-71°
*On the mountains: 57-60° (Hazy conditions from forest fires)
*Winds: SW 10-15 MPH
*OVERNIGHT: Cloudy with scattered showers. Lows valley: 51-54° : Mountains: 47-50° : Winds: SW 10-15 MPH

Friday: Mostly cloudy & warm with scattered showers and isolated thundershowers possible in the afternoon.
* Highs Valley: 73-76°
*On the mountains: 62-65°
*Winds: SW 10-15 MPH
*OVERNIGHT: Cloudy with scattered showers continuing, ending toward daylight. Cooler. Lows valley: 40-43° : Mountains: 31-34° : Winds: W 10-15 MPH shifting N after midnight.

The weekend looks dry after lingering showers Saturday morning with temps only reaching the mid 50’s valley and mid 40’s mountains. Sunday is sunny with highs in the lower 50’s valley and mid 40’s mountains.

Rain is back in the forecast early next week.

Today’s cut is All Half The Treasure from the CD 29 Dances.

Louisville, Kentucky native Jan Smith writes songs rooted in vibrant imagery and sincere, stark emotion. The artists whose music she grew up with — Merle Haggard, Nina Simone, and Townes Van Zant among many others – influence her work, as does the traditional bluegrass music of her new home in the mountains of central Virginia.

On April 4, 2006, Landslide Records released “29 Dances,” produced in Nashville by Bil VornDick (Alison Krauss, Ralph Stanley). The record features Johnny Hiland, Byron House (Sam Bush, Nickel Creek), Pat McInerney (Nanci Griffith), Randy Kohrs, David Talbot (the Grascals), Mark Fain (Ricky Skaggs), Robert Bowlin (Bill Monroe), Patty Mitchell, and Smith’s partner, Jeff Vogelgesang.

Updated 2:28 AM EDT
NBC 29 is reporting that 2 people were shot along I-64 while traveling down the interstate. NBC 29 Valley Bureau Chief, Ken Slack, reports live on the air that he has viewed the bullet holes in one of the vehicles parked at Augusta Medical Center. A Red Mazda 3. One of the shootings occurred around the 105 MM of I-64 near the Rest Area. That person is reported to have possibly been grazed in the neck by a bullet then drove himself to the emergency room to seek medical attention.

Another victim, a female driving a mini van, is being treated after a bullet struck near her driver’s side door.

Neither of the injuries is considered major.

Update: 2:10 AM EDT:
According to Virginia 511 State Site, I-64 is confirmed shutdown starting at Exit 96 proceeding east to 118 near Charlottesville.

1:50 AM EDT
We have received information that a high powered rifle may have been used.

Previous posts:
A massive state and local law enforcement buildup is underway along I-64 in Augusta, Nelson, and Albemarle Counties. From what NCL can gather,

    (this is very preliminary)

something involving the shooting of several vehicles traveling along I-64. We have no information at this time as to whether injuries occurred. But unconfirmed area media reports are saying at least one injury has occurred.

NCL can directly confirm a huge search is underway along the I-64 corridor including helicopters and the interstate is closed down between exit 96 in Augusta and 119 in Albemarle County.

This is an extremely fluid situation and we are updating as we have information

A few folks got a winter surprise Monday morning. As we talked might happen in the Monday forecast, snow fell on the mountains here in Nelson County. John Taylor sent us some pics of the light covering of an inch or so at locations above 2000 feet like Wintergreen. The snow didn’t do anything to really mess up travel, but was a reminder we still have a few lingering weeks of some winter like weather left before warmer temps move until next fall. And a warm up is exactly what we’ll be talking about as we go along in today’s cast.

First, want to mention what a nice time they had Monday night over at Delfosse Winery & Vineyard. Lots of familiar faces got together and recreated the Big Night Dinner! And boy did they! You’ll be reading more about what they did in the coming weeks, but the pictures above are a tiny preview!

Though they were all inside over at Delfosse last night, the evening was a nice one to cap off a day of mixed precipitation. Folks in the valley saw some snow too, but way warm to stick. Some light rain fell late in the day, but just a smattering.

Things are about to change after one more fairly cool day. By this afternoon our winds will start kicking around more southerly for a trend toward warmer temps. We do have a chance for some light showers again by Wednesday night into Thursday, but temperatures begin feeling a lot nicer. We’ll be near 70° on Wednesday and again on Friday. No dramatic cool downs are on the horizon for several days.

Today’s cut is All James River from the CD 29 Dances.

Thanks to faithful web and magazine reader, John Taylor, upon Wintergreen Mountain for sending us these photos of the light snow that fell there last night. We talked about the possibility in today’s weathercast, and sure enough, here’s the proof! While the valley really didn’t get much of anything, the mountains got to see that even though the calendar says Spring, Winter says, not so quick!

Thanks again John for send them our way!

Ok, maybe I didn’t just grow up eating peanut butter. Actually my mom used to cook up a roast at the start of the week and I’d take these cold roast beef sandwiches to schooll for lunch everyday. Don’t think I had a school lunch until I was in high school! But you know I never worried about what I was eating, not once. You shouldn’t either and you don’t have to.

Ken and Yvonne Harris at a.m. Fog on the Nelson – Albemarle County line just off Route 151 carry all of the good food you’ll be confident in serving your family. No, it’s not that roast beef my mom used to fix up, but it might as well be!

Easter Sunday ended up being a really nice day with enough high pressure in place to keep the clouds out for much of the afternoon. We were cooler than the first half of the weekend but still pretty comfortable. Overall it was really nice. Easter also marks the official end of the winter skiing season up at Wintergreen Resort. That’s the time they always hold their yearly Splash and Dash or Pond Skimming, as it’s known. In our weather photos above, Christina Kline, grabbed this shot of Courtesy Patrol Supervisor and Ski Patroller Paul Whitehead of Lovigston headed across the pond. You can see many more of the photos from Saturday’s event taken by Paul Purpura by clicking here. There’s some really good ones!

Overnight some folks got a tiny reminder that winter isn’t done just yet. Some light snow began falling in parts of Central Virginia. Today we can’t rule out that some snow showers will be falling, especially above 2000 feet. Even a dusting is possible in some locations, but don’t cancel any plans. This won’t be much, if anything, and it certainly won’t hang around for long either. We’ll have a combination of sun and clouds with intermittent rain or snow in between.

As the week goes on, we dry out and warm up nicely feeling more spring like. Much of the week will be in the mid 60’s and by Friday look for temps to be near 70 degrees.

One of our all time favorites heard here at NCL, Robin Wynn, takes us out with Swing from her Oblivion CD.

Have a great Monday everyone!

You can check out and buy all of Robin’s latest CD releases here.

Robin-Bridge
Whether playing solo, or accompanied by her six-piece band, Robin Wynn’s shows are marked with high energy and good spirits, with her distinctive, smooth-like-honey/sharp-as-a-tack vocals cresting the wave. With her ear for hooks, Robin writes music you swear you’ve heard before, yet is always unique and fresh, often drawing comparisons to Bonnie Raitt and Lucinda Williams at her most “Americana,” Kim Gordon (Sonic Youth) and Liz Phair at her rockingest.

A hard-working bunch of players, Robin and her band performed over a hundred shows up and down the east coast in 2006, gathering enthusiasts at every stop. Bandmates include Lea Calvani (Dirty Dishes) on percussion and vocals, John Allietta (Thrum, Naked Puritans) on drums, Clayton Avent (Six Day Bender) on cello and guitar, Blake Wheeler (Bleak, Goldenhour) on bass and vocals, and Mark Goldstein on guitar, keyboards, and vocals.

Spring 2007 marks the release of Robin Wynn’s latest studio achievement “A Few Dusty Miles,” a full-length CD of eleven new songs which includes such favorites from her recent tour dates as the sultry ballad “Bottle,” the quirky half-time rag “Sweet Sally,” and “Soldier,” an instant pop classic that will stay in your head for days – and is also available to listen on her page at www.myspace.com/robinwynn
