Late March Snow @ Wintergreen

Today’s weather and audiocast is brought to you exclusively by:

There’s something about early Spring. You begin seeing hints of green, and then wham, snowflakes! Where did they come from. That’s part of the ritual in moving from Winter to warmer weather. It can’t really decide what it wants to do. But there’s one decision you don’t have to fret over, that’s stopping in at Ken & Yvonne Harris’ a.m. Fog on the Nelson-Albemarle Line along Route 151. They are as close to the farm as you can get!

Right now while Spring is still trying to make up it’s mind, they’ve already got; Asparagus, Lettuce, Cucumbers, STRAWBERRIES, strawberry onions (the best!!!), roasting potatoes, Idaho potatoes, carrots, green peppers, farm eggs, meat, & fresh baked bread.

And yea, they still have my favorite the trusty:
Local “Happy Steer” Hormone and Antibiotic Free Meat
-Local Hormone & Antibiotic Free Chicken

Not to mention all of the other vegetables, annual, and perennial plants along with lots of fruit trees ready for the spring planting! Spring is here!

And have you seen that new beautiful farm market going up, they ARE OPEN FOR BUSINESS NOW, and soon they’ll be featuring hot teas, coffee, muffins, and bread.

Visit them on the web at www.amfog.net or call them at 540-456-7100.

Before kicking off today, want to remind you that our flagship NCL Weathernet Station here in the Rockfish Valley is out of service due to a hard drive crash on our weather computer. We’ll have that fixed in the next day or so, but meanwhile you can check out our other stations in the network.

Also want to bring some good news about the fires that have been burning along the western side of the BRP in the vicinity of Route 56 near Montebello. Shannon Simmons and Scott Clark have been sending sometime hourly updates during the past week. Everything is getting under control up there now, and Molly Sexton sent in some additional photos late Sunday of the burned areas left behind. You can see those and more details by clicking here.

And finally, congrats to the Rockfish Presbyterian Knuckle Heads for raising just under $9000.00 for the St Baldrick’s Foundation. You know them all and can read more their head shaving event here!

Talk about a small surprise over the weekend. Some light snow fell upon the mountains. That’s really not that much of a surprise. This time of year is the battle between Winter and Spring. The photo above taken by Christina Kline, shows a light dusting, but that’s about it. Some folks above 2000 feet may see some light snow this morning before occasional drizzle settles in for the day. It will actually be about as warm in the mountains vs the valley since the cloud cover will provide a canopy trapping the heat up above.

Light breezes blowing in from the ESE will keep what’s called a moist maritime flow coming our way from the Atlantic. That means we’ll pretty much have a cloudy day Monday with chances for on and off drizzle or showers. By tonight temps don’t change much at all staying in the upper 40’s for overnight lows. On Tuesday we warm up by roughly 20 degrees, but chances for thundershowers enter the forecast as well. Mid-Week we have a brief lull in the action before unsettled weather moves back in.

Aftermath Of Forest Fires Along The BRP
Near Montebello, Virginia

Our thanks to Molly Sexton from the BRP area for the photos and update of the improving situation near and along the BRP. This evening Shannon Simmons sent along the photos for Molly and the following comments by Molly at 5:10 PM EDT:

“Snowfall helped to clear the air up here this morning! Route 56 was opened and had a “Watch for Debri” (They meant debris) sign. Yesterday, the sign said “Warning: Heavy Smoke” and firefighters would not let anyone pass. Route 56 and the Parkway entrance were closed. To get to Staunton we had to drive through Montebello turning left on Rt. 817 continuing over the Parkway at Love’s Gap, thru Sherando to Interstate 64. You can see the back burning damage on Rt. 56. The Parkway was open today and here are some photos I took of the damage there as well. It seems to me that the fire only reached the West side of the Parkway. There is still a little smoke seen in some areas but mostly it just smells like charred fire. We are blessed and grateful that it wasn’t any worse. I still think our little area has ended up with more birds. Molly”

As we first told you back in early February
a group from The Rockfish Presbyterian Church took part in an event to honor kids undergoing chemotherapy. ( who in the process lose their hair) This raises funds for cancer treatment and research, “Team Rockfish” had their heads shaved for Saturday night in Charlottesville.
We are working through St. Baldrick’s Foundation which began in 1999

Here, Nelson County Life’s Perfect Fit columnist and owner of Nelson Physical Therapy, Agnes Schrider, is about to lose her hair, all of it!

Thanks to Jamie Heard of the church who sent us the photos and was one of the participants. Jamie wrote in Sunday morning to say:

Our team, The Rockfish Knuckle Heads, raised $8,890. We were the first place team in fund raising. The overall event raised $66,527 for childhood cancer research.

Way to Go, that is nothing to sneeze at Jamie! Congrats to everyone for a terrific fund raiser!

Late March Snow @ Wintergreen
Wintergreen Mountain, Virginia

Like we chatted about in last week’s weather, winter still has a few tricks up the sleeve, and this morning we saw them! Our Christina Kline grabbed a few of these shots at Wintergreen Resort out in the courtyard. Ecen the valley has seen some light wet snow and sleet this morning.

Our NCL-Wintergreen Nature Foundation Weathernet Station shows temps in the mid 20’s at 8:45 this morning, so above 2000 feet and along the VRP, be careful you could have some minor travel problems. IN the valley temps are hovering in the upper 30’s as of mid morning.

Our faithful web reader and weather watcher, John Taylor says at 7:50 AM:

A lively and noisy wintry mix started falling at 7:30 am Sunday up here. 28 degrees. There is a light coating on decks, cars, and driveway. Fair amount of rain in the mix now. May be trying to change over..

Forest Fires At St. Mary’s Wilderness On The BRP
Near Montebello, Virginia

A helicopter drops in to get water from a nearby pond after fire jumped a fire break earlier today near the Blue Ridge Parkway.

Updated 9:30 PM EDT 3.29.08

Another Busy Day For The Firefighters.

This morning, fire crews closed Rt. 56 again from Vesuvius up to the BRP to
continue backburning areas that were still considered a threat along the fire line.

At 5 PM, Route 56 re-opened along with the 14 mile stretch of the BRP that
has been closed for days.

There is still heavy smoke in the area of St. Mary’s Wilderness, but the work
done by all the crews working the fires is finally starting to pay off.

Our area here on Bradley Lane is clear of smoke, however, on parts of the BRP
and Vesuvius the smoldering still can be seen.

Looks like it’s going the turn out to be a great weekend here in Whetstone Ridge!

The Clark and Simmons Families

Here’s the latest sent to us from Shannon up near the parkway as of 4:30 PM Saturday 3.29.08:

Hi Tommy,
I just got up here around 3pm and we had to come up Irish Creek because Rt. 56 was closed at the RR crossing in Vesuvius.
I never stopped to ask what they were doing and when they would be done.
I just assumed it was more of the same backburning.
I did see the figherfighters and several vehicles at the same spot on Rt. 56 and BRP
intersection also around Haynes Chapel.
The smoke is really thick on that side and we here are in the clear because of the wind.
Coming up 81 at the Raphine exit then toward 11 was a real eye opener!
The fire encompasses such a large area it really scares you.
I haven’t seen or talked with Scott today but he always comes up to visit and I will
share your e-mail with him and if we have anything exciting to foward, I will send it your way.
Also, on a funny note…
The photo of the helicopter getting water from our neighbors pond has a great story behind it.
Just when the bucket was lifted, a 4 foot carp jumped out of it! It surprised all the onlookers.
Ever heard of fishing from a helicopter? We have now!

As we have been following since the beginning here, the fires continue to burn near the Blue Ridge Parkway at the Nelson-Rockbridge-Augusta County Lines.

Thanks again to Scott Clark for sending this to us. At 6:30 PM EDT he sends the following update:

“Fire jumped the line on Rt. 56 and the copter was called in for water drops
Everything here is ok.”

Clark-Chopper-2

NCL continues to follow this and will post updates as we have them.

Afton : NCL Weather Computer Has Bad Day!

0

REFRESH Nelson County Life Magazine HERE

We just can’t figure it out. Our Dell (we don’t like PC’s, we have been MAC people for years) tower weather computer crashed yesterday. Yep, bit the dirt. Gone, out of here, kaput. Gee it’s only been running 24/7 for about 6 years, even before it became a weather computer! Guess they don’t make drives like they used to!

Anyway for the next few days the flagship weather station here at NCL Nelson County Life Magazine will be out of service while we either replace the hard drive or replace the computer. In the interim you’ll see the current conditions, upper left screen, from our other station over at NCL-Delfossee Winery & Vineyard in Faber.

You can visit other NCL Weathernet stations in our network by clicking on the handy links below as well, or using that drop down menu to the left under current conditions.

We should have ours back up and running this coming week!

Forest Fire St Mary’s Wilderness BRP
Near Montebello, Virginia

St Mary's Clark-1

Above, firefighters set a back burn looking toward the Blue Ridge Parkway.

Thanks to Scott Clark from the BRP area west of Montebello, for sending us these photos. Scott tells us at 4:15 PM EDT:

Fire has consumed an estimated 5000 acres of the area in and around the forest.
Back-burning that began earlier today on the right side of Rt. 56 from the BRP down toward Vesuvius has almost wrapped up and Rt. 56 is expected to re-open by 5:30 p.m.
Our area is heavy with smoke

Updated: 11:00 AM EDT 3.27.08

Here is the latest information we have from Shannon Simmons at Whetstone Ridge regarding the fires. Thank you Shannon for keeping us in the loop on what is happening up there:

-Rockbridge County brought in heavy machinery to work the fire.

-Power has been out in parts of Montebello.
Central Va Co-op just finished working on the lines and power
has been restored.

-Helicopters are doing rounds near 56 and the parkway right now.
We are hoping the fire can be contained at the parkway.
The Montebello Fire Dept. will be up around Skylark Farm to
keep an eye on the area because that is where the danger zone is.
Fortunately, the fire has not gone south and has not crossed the parkway.

-Scott Clark said, even though you can see and smell smoke,
the wind is not as bad as it has been the last 2 days
and with the wind still pushing north-west, we are safe for now.

I will update you as necessary,

NCL continues to monitor the situation along the BRP involving The St. Mary’s Wilderness area. As of very early Thursday morning, we are receiving eyewitness reports that the fire has spread and continues to grow as of this posted update.

We just received an update from the Simmons again up at Whetstone Ridge along the BRP very early this morning: Here’s what some of their neighbors report as of 11:30 PM Wednesday night:

Sent: Wednesday, March 26, 2008 11:28 PM
Subject: RE: Latest News on the Wildfire…

Parkway is now closed and the fire has grown to 1400 acres. Isn’t near us yet but I will be up most of the night watching. Its an eerie orange glow looking toward the parkway.

The Simmons sent along more information here, along with links to the The Staunton Leader & News Virginian who have pictures. Thanks for the updates! :

Here are the latest photos of the wildfire
See Link below (The News Leader – Staunton, VA.)

New Gallery: Fire flares in St. Mary’s wilderness – 1:39 PM

From John Taylor @ Wintergreen, 2:20 PM EDT:

I was out a few minutes ago and went to the south-looking overlook on top of Wintergreen. Could not see anything looking south resembling smoke plumes – but is was quite hazy south and looking west toward the Shenandoah Valley it was completely socked in and gray. Given 37% reported humidity — my gauge here at the house shows even lower — there must be other fires going on …

NCL has been receiving several e-mail this mornign about heavy smoke along the BRP near the Nelson-Rockbridge County Line.

John Taylor wrote us with the following:

Several of us noticed a distinct wood smoke smell in the air up here on top of
Wintergreen. It is also hazy despite a 31% relative humidity.

I checked Wintergreen dispatch and they told me there was a fire about 15 miles
down the parkway. FYI

We also got this e-mail from the Shannon Simmons up at Whetstone Subdivision:

I just spoke with Scott Clark and got the latest update on a wildfire that is burning very close to us.

He said that it is visable from Rt.11, covers a very large area, and is being contained at the moment.

Every now and then, Scott said he smells smoke and many animals have crossed over the parkway to our side to escape the very large fire. He also said the wind is blowing north, pushing the fire
away from us and it has not crossed the parkway.

Scott will keep me posted and I will e-mail you with any further details as neccessary.

You can read more about it in the Staunton Newsleader link
