Road Conditions Slowly Improving Across The Area : VSP Urges Caution

0
Most primary roads were getting in good shape by mid-morning Monday, but many secondary and private roads were still snow covered.

Nelson County, Virginia

The sun is finally starting to come out and slowly folks are digging and drying out from Sunday’s big snowfall across the Blue Ridge.

Virginia State Police released this information around 7:40 AM Monday morning:

“Due to Sunday’s heavy snow and the overnight freezing temperatures, Virginia State Police is still advising Virginians to avoid traveling Monday in the western, southern and central regions of the Commonwealth. Conditions are remain slick and challenging, and troopers continue to respond to vehicles getting stuck on and off the highways.

Highway road conditions have also been dangerous for Virginia State Police. A third Trooper was struck early Monday morning (Dec. 10) in Henrico County in what ended up being a five-vehicle crash. At approximately 3:58 a.m., a vehicle traveling northbound on I-295 lost control at the 31 mile marker by spinning out of control, colliding with several vehicles including a trooper and his patrol vehicle as he was working a crash on the right shoulder. Trooper J. W. Catlett was seated inside his patrol car with the driver of the crash he was investigating. Trooper Catlett had to be transported to the hospital for treatment of minor injuries. There were no other injuries reported. Two other troopers were fortunate to escape injury Sunday evening when their patrol cars were struck by out-of-control vehicles on Interstate 81 in Pulaski County and Interstate 95 in Hanover County, respectively.

As of 7:15 a.m. Monday (Dec. 10), Virginia State Police statewide are responding to 30 disabled vehicles and 17 traffic crashes.

On Sunday (Dec. 9), Virginia State Police statewide responded to more than 1,000 traffic crashes and just shy of 1,150 disabled vehicles. The majority of the crashes occurred in the regions along the Interstate 81 corridor, southern Virginia and central Virginia. Most crashes involved only damage to vehicles. There have been no reported traffic deaths associated with the storm.

For those having to travel today, please check VDOT’s 511 for the latest in road conditions anywhere in Virginia.

VSP Responding to Crashes & Disabled Vehicles : Suggesting To Avoid Travel

0

From VSP Richmond Headquarters:

“With winter weather and treacherous conditions widespread across western, southern and central Virginia, the Virginia State Police is advising motorists to avoid traveling, unless absolutely necessary. State police have increased patrols to ensure quick response and clearance of traffic crashes and disabled vehicles in those most impacted areas of the Commonwealth.  As of 1 p.m. Sunday (Nov. 9), Virginia State Police are responding to 32 traffic crashes in its Richmond Division; 14 crashes in its Appomattox Division; six crashes in its Wytheville Division; and 13 crashes in its Salem Division. (For jurisdictions/boundaries for each Division, go to http://www.vsp.virginia.gov/Office_Locations.shtm). The majority of the crashes involve only damage to vehicles. No traffic fatalities have been reported at this time.

State police is reminding all motorists who must drive today to #Drive2SaveLives by driving for conditions:

Slow Your Speed. Whether the roads are icy or just wet, surfaces are still slick and can cause a driver going too fast for conditions to lose control.

Stay Alert. Avoiding distractions – phone, radio, food, etc. – and focusing strictly on your role as a driver and on the other vehicles around you significantly increase your chances of avoiding a crash. Multi-tasking while driving puts yourself and others at risk. Also be alert to changing road conditions and share the road responsibly with all types of vehicles.

Buckle Up. Drivers and passengers should always buckle up for safety. If you lose control on a slick roadway and spin out, the seat belt holds you in place and will likely save your life.

511 for Road Conditions. Needing to know if it’s safe to travel? Then call 511 or visit www.511virginia.orgor download the 511 App. Only call 911 if it’s an emergency and not for road conditions.

Thanks,

Nellysford : Wild Wolf Brewing Hosts Collaborative Brew With Wintergreen Adaptive Sports

It’s 5-o’clock somewhere, which means it’s perfect timing for the folks at Wild Wolf Brewing Company to make a little magic out back. David Shreve, the director of Wintergreen Adaptive Sports is holding a plastic pitcher.

“These are Centennial hops that we’re getting ready to add as a bittering agent to this soon to be delicious beer.”

David Shreve, (left) Director of Wintergreen Adaptive Sports, helps rake spent grains from a tank while Wild Wolf Brewmaster Danny Wolf looks on. The event is part of a collaborative brew at Wild Wolf Brewing Company benefiting the local non-profit that has introduced outdoor sports to more than 2500 student with disabilities.

The beer is a collaborative brew between the Wintergreen-based adaptive sports organization and the Nellysford brewery, and it looks like the team is leaning towards a Hoppy Amber, which would give the amber an overall “bigness” to the beer. As for the official name? Brewmaster Danny Wolf says that’s something that may be hammered out soon over a pint or two.

With an expected January 2019 release, a portion of the net proceeds from sales of the special beer will go to WAS, which has over the years given adaptive instruction in outdoor sports to more than 2500 students with disabilities.

Walkabout Outfitter raises $1,000 for the Blue Ridge Land Conservancy

Walkabout Outfitter, a locally owned, independent outdoor retailer located throughout Virginia partnered up with the brand, SmartWool, to successfully raise $1,000.00 for the Blue Ridge Land Conservancy in Roanoke, Virginia by donating a percentage of Smartwool sock sales during the month of “Socktober.”

Five dollars for every pair of Smartwool socks sold during the month of October was donated to the Blue Ridge Land Conservancy; a local not-for-profit organization that works hard to promote the conservation of western Virginia’s natural resources farms, forests, waterways and rural landscapes. Tina Miller, co-owner of Walkabout exclaimed, “We were delighted to have so many customers shop our Socktober promotion in October to purchase socks for a cause. Without our customer’s support we wouldn’t be able to give back to our communities as much as we do!”

The promotion not only supported the local community, but was nationally received and promoted in other independently owned retail businesses and therefore supported not-for-profits in communities across America.

Walkabout Outfitter is an independently owned outdoor retailer that opened their doors in 2005 in Lexington, VA and later added another five locations in Roanoke (two), Harrisonburg, Richmond and Blacksburg. Merchandise for hiking, backpacking, camping, travel and footwear in all locations from brands such as Patagonia, The North Face, Merrell and Keen.

Wintergreen Resort Says We’re Opening This Weekend!

A few days ago we told you about Wintergreen Resort officially kicking into gear for snow production. That head start in making snow has paid off. Combine that with some cold temps in the mountains and the possibility of a more significant winter storm system late in the weekend, it has created the perfect formula for the opening.

Winter is arriving a bit early this year!

Possibly Significant Winter Storm Taking Shape For Part Of Coming Weekend

0
Graphic courtesy of CBS-19 Meteorologist David Reese : The potential is increasing for a possibly significant winter event during the second half of the coming weekend.

Central Virginia Blue Ridge

After a quick taste of wintry weather on Wednesday morning attention is now focused on the coming weekend. In particular the second half of the weekend. Conditions are slowly coming together that could produce a hefty winter storm across parts of the Blue Ridge and the Mid Atlantic. As of Wednesday evening, it appears the most likely time frame would be late Saturday night into Sunday and possibly Monday.

Evening Meteorologist David Reese with our media partners over at CBS-19 News in Charlottesville discusses more in his briefing below.
