Cow on the inflatable trampoline
Wintergreen Mountain, Virginia

Okay I must admit I have no clue why this cow was on the inflatable trampoline at Wintergreen Resort????? I suspect they were doing some construction or cleaning and it was the most handy place to park the fake cow for a bit. But it got my attention! Moo!

Thursday was a mixed bag of weather across Nelson County. Some folks saw no rain, others got a little bit. I was up on the mountain having lunch at Wintergreen with Paul Purpura, our NCL photographer, and a pretty good rain came up about the time I was leaving. I was over at Devil’s Knob just before leaving and there was a brief heavy rain and some pretty good wind gusts. The threat of severe weather loomed for much of Thursday afternoon and early evening, but all watches had been dropped by 7:45 PM and no warnings were ever issued for our immediate area.

Much milder and pleasant weather is on its way, with a tremendous weekend shaping up!

Here’s the numbers from Thursday:

*NCL-Nelson County Life Magazine – Greenfield
High: 94.3 degrees @ 12:42 PM
0.00″ of rain

*NCL-Wintergreen Winery at the foot of Wintergreen Mountain
High: 91.8 degrees @ 12:33 PM
0.02″ of rain
Wind Gust: 23.9 MPH

*NCL-Wintergreen Nature Foundation @ Devil’s Knob
High: 78.3 degrees @ 12:23 PM
0.10″ of rain
Wind Gust: 24.8 MPH

*NCL-Tiger Fuel – Lovingston
High: 90.0 degrees @ 1:04 PM
0.16″ of rain
Wind Gust: 38.0 MPH

The current surface map continues to show a frontal boundary working its way through the area today. Until it’s moved well south expect variably cloudy skies from time to time with passing showers early. We should see more sun after the noon hour as the day wears on with clearing skies and sunny conditions moving in by lunch.
Current-Sat Surface Map

The National Forecast Map, shows the front moving through the area bringing cooler drier air for the weekend.

In yesterday’s weather we showed you the progress on Nelson County’s first micro brewery. The gang at Blue Mountain Brewery in Afton is making huge progress with a slated opening this fall. But WAIT! There’s more!

A couple of years ago we first told you about Steve Crandall, owner of Tectonics II, plans to open a similar micro brewery on the other end of 151 at 664 toward Wintergreen. Everyone is asking is that still happening. The answer is yes! Steve e-mailed us this morning with pictures of his tanks being removed in Japan. Once packed they will set sail for the U.S. then ultimately Beech Grove at his brewery to open in 2008. He still hasn’t officially named the brewery, but it will be located in the area between the Ski Barn and Glen Mary Village on 664.

Photos submitted by Steve Crandall

Brewhouse
Above the tanks in the brew house in Japan. Steve tells us to get the tanks out of the brewery, some of the platforms had to be cut into pieces, they will be reassembled on this end once in Beech Grove.

tank workers
Here’s workers in Japan prepare one of the tanks to be hoisted. The tanks were taken out over a period of seven nights since it was in a large shopping complex. The workers were not allowed to work during daylight hours.

Tank hoist
Here one of the tanks is hoisted into place for eventual shipping to Beech Grove in Nelson County! I’m getting thirsty already!!

We’ll keep you posted on the progress of Steve’s tanks, but it’s official, Nelson’s fabulous vineyards and wineries will get some company with the two breweries on the way!

Last week independent agents of Wintergreen Real Estate Company made a generous donation of $5,000 to the Nelson County Pantry, a non-profit organization that provides food to area residents who are in need. Each month the Nelson County Pantry provides food to over 175 families. With the help of several large grants and corporate gifts, as well as local churches and individual donors, the Nelson County Pantry has grown successfully since it started in 1997. The 1500 sq. foot Pantry facility is located on the property of the St. Mary’s church along 29 N in Lovingston. Student and community volunteers work together to run the program and community sponsors like the agents of Wintergreen Real Estate Company replenish their food supply. “The $5,000 contribution provided by the Wintergreen Real Estate agents will provide funds to supply food for about four months”, proclaimed Dick Nees, President of the Nelson County Pantry.

FOUNTAIN

Cleaning the fountain @ The Mark Addy
Nellysford, Virginia

With all of the hot days we’ve had recently, this seems like the perfect place to hang out, in the fountain at The Mark Addy Inn in Nellysford. Remember Jimbo, far left, he’s the man we told you about on page 34 of the current issue of NCL . In the fountain pond is Rafael Tal. He and his wife Leslie own of The Mark Addy. Rafi was out cleaning the filter in his fountain the day we grabbed this shot. If you’ve never been by there to eat or stay, check it out. Rafi is quite the chef!! You’ll want to hang out in a pond or stream today, it’s going to be a hot and muggy one again!

Wednesday was forecast to be a stormy afternoon, but after all was said and done, nothing happened. I missed this one by a country mile folks! The only thing good I can say is all of the educated professional science types in the NWS did too! A frontal boundary that’s been in the area for most of the week moved back to our north away from us, so we were left with partly cloudy skies, hot temps, but nothing to really get afternoon thunderstorms going in our immediate area.

Here’s the numbers from Wednesday:

*NCL-Nelson County Life Magazine – Greenfield
High: 94.3 degrees @ 4:36 PM
0.00″ of rain

*NCL-Wintergreen Nature Foundation @ Devil’s Knob
High: 77.5 degrees @ 1:44 PM
0.00″ of rain

*NCL-Tiger Fuel – Lovingston
High: 91.2degrees @ 4:18 PM
0.00″ of rain

The current surface map continues to show a frontal boundary to our north. As long as it’s in the area, scattered afternoon thunderstorms will be possible. Some could become strong to severe.
Current-Sat Surface Map

The National Forecast Map, shows the front very slow to move through Nelson. A Bermuda high continues to pump warm and air into our region on southwesterly winds. Over the next 36 hours the front moves through the area bringing cooler drier air for the weekend.
Today’s Forecast Map

The Storm Prediction Center has us on the far southern fringe of the slight risk area for severe weather later today, the green outline.

A portion of their thinking for the Ohio Valley and areas near:

DEEP SHEAR OF 30 TO 35 KT WILL BE
SUFFICIENT FOR ORGANIZED MULTICELLS AND POSSIBLY SOME SUPERCELL
STRUCTURES. STORMS SHOULD REDEVELOP AND INTENSIFY MOST LIKELY ALONG
PRE-FRONTAL OUTFLOW BOUNDARIES. DAMAGING WIND SHOULD BE THE MAIN
THREAT…BUT THE STRONGER STORMS MAY ALSO BECOME CAPABLE OF
PRODUCING HAIL.

Local forecast
*Today Partly cloudy this morning with spotty fog burning off by mid morning. Very hot & humid with Scattered thunderstorms (some possibly severe) in the afternoon across 30% of the area. Heat index around 101 this afternoon.
*High temps in Nellysford, Hickory Creek, and Cub Creek 95 degrees.
*On the mountains above 2000 feet along the BRP, Wintergreen, Three Ridges, Devil’s Knob, and Love, Partly sunny warm and humid with scattered afternoon thunderstorms.
Highs top out around 83 degrees.
Winds SW 5-10 MPH

*Tonight Mostly cloudy, muggy & warm with thunderstorms in the evening over 50% of the area. Patchy fog in any areas that get rain.
*Lows valley around 71 degrees.
*On the mountains overnight low of 68.
*Winds SW-5 MPH.

*In the extended outlook

Friday Partly sunny with widely scattered afternoon thunderstorms over 30% of the area. Slightly cooler.
Highs around 85 valley – Mostly cloudy mountains with scattered thunderstorms
High around 78. Overnight lows generally in the upper 50’s valley and mid 50’s mountains.

The weekend looks mostly sunny and mild with afternoon highs in the low 80’s valley, mid & upper 70’s mountains. Overnight lows upper 50’s valley – low & mid 50’s mountains.

Remember when severe weather or news breaks out, come here. We’ll have all of the latest watches, warnings, and coverage affecting Nelson County, Wintergreen, and nearby counties.

Have a great Thursday!

Now this is a rare shot. Recently when I was up in Al Stacey’s chopper shooting video over the James near Winginia, our NCL photographer, Paul Purpura, was on the ground shooting boats on the river. We made a low pass over Paul at the Wingina landing. He got this shot in the top picture of me, I got the shot of him in the lower picture. Can you say dueling cameras!

Tuesday was a pretty quiet day across the area. Some thunderstorms did pop up in the afternoon, but most of Nelson County stayed dry. Today brings the possible threat of strong possibly severe weather later in the afternoon in to the evening. Overnight a frontal boundary has moved back northward allowing moist air to spread back over our area. This combined with daytime heating may provide the necessary ingredients for strong to severe weather. NWS hazardous weather outlook references this.

THIS HAZARDOUS WEATHER OUTLOOK IS FOR MARYLAND WEST OF THE
EASTERN SHORE INCLUDING THE CHESAPEAKE BAY AND EAST OF GARRETT
COUNTY…EASTERN WEST VIRGINIA…NORTHERN AND CENTRAL VIRGINIA…
WASHINGTON DC AND THE TIDAL POTOMAC RIVER.

.DAY ONE…TODAY AND TONIGHT

SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS ARE POSSIBLE THIS AFTERNOON AND EVENING.
DAMAGING WINDS ARE THE BIGGEST THREAT FROM THE STRONGEST
THUNDERSTORMS. THE GREATEST CHANCE FOR SEVERE WEATHER IS BETWEEN
2 PM AND 8 PM.

This bears watching throughout the afternoon and really comes down to if we get lots of sunshine today, this will help get the storms fired up. Keep an eye here on the web site to see the latest developments. If we get ample daytime heating things will start popping.

Here’s the numbers from Tuesday:

*NCL-Nelson County Life Magazine – Greenfield
High: 91.0 degrees @ 4:13 PM
0.00″ of rain

*NCL-Wintergreen Nature Foundation @ Devil’s Knob
High: 77.5 degrees @ 1:44 PM
0.00″ of rain

*NCL-Tiger Fuel – Lovingston
High: 89.4 degrees @ 3:43 PM
0.00″ of rain

The current surface map shows a stationary front working back to our north allowing moist air to spill back over the area. A Bermuda High located out in the Atlantic will continue to spill that warm and unstable air into Central Virginia.
Current-Sat Surface Map

The National Forecast Map, as the day wears on the air mass across Nelson will become more unstable and thunderstorms will break out.
Today’s Forecast Map

Local forecast
*Today Partly sunny this morning with spotty fog and isolated thunderstorms west. Scattered thunderstorms, some possibly strong to severe, in the afternoon across 40% of the area. Hot & muggy.
*High temps in Wingina, Tyro, and Piney River 93 degrees.
*On the mountains above 2000 feet along the BRP, Wintergreen, Three Ridges, Devil’s Knob, and Love, Partly sunny warm and humid with scattered afternoon thunderstorms, some possibly strong to severe.
Highs top out around 78 degrees.
Winds SW 5-10 MPH

*Tonight Mostly cloudy, muggy & warm with thunderstorms in the evening. Patchy fog in any areas that get rain.
*Lows valley around 71 degrees.
*On the mountains overnight low of 70.
*Winds SW-5 MPH.

*In the extended outlook
Thursday Partly cloudy, hot and humid, with scattered afternoon thunderstorms over 40% of the area. Highs in the mid 90’s valley, around 88 degrees on the mountains.

Friday Partly sunny, with scattered afternoon thunderstorms over 30% of the area.
Highs around 85 valley – Partly cloudy mountains, Scattered afternoon thunderstorms
High around 80. Overnight lows generally in the upper 60’s valley and mountains.

The weekend looks mostly sunny and cooler with afternoon highs cooling into the 80’s valley, upper 70’s mountains. Overnight lows 60’s valley – upper 50’s mountains.
