Camp Jeep
Oak Ridge Estate : Arrington, VA

It’s official, Camp Jeep 2007 in Nelson County is underway. We spent much of the day out at Oak Ridge Estate in Arrington on Thursday. What a heck of an event! There will be tons of Camp Jeep pics and video throughout the weekend right here on our site, so check back often. You can see more picture by scrolling down or clicking here. There is even a category named Camp Jeep, so by clicking on it, you will see anything and everything Camp Jeep.

We lucked out Thursday with most areas in Nelson staying dry. Some scattered thunderstorms did fire up points west and south, but as we predicted, the intense activity stayed well west of the Blue Ridge. Friday will be another day much like Thursday where we start out with some sun, showers and storms will develop by afternoon across the area. There is a slightly better chance of seeing storms east of the BRP today and especially on Saturday. Again, the next several days will by no means be rainy events all of the time, but decent chances are there for scattered storms in the afternoons.

Here’s the numbers from our very own NCL Weathernet sites Thursday:

*NCL-Nelson County Life Magazine – Greenfield
Wed High: 92.8 degrees @ 3:26 PM
0.00″ of rain

*NCL-Wintergreen Nature Foundation @ Devil’s Knob
Wed High: 76.8 degrees @ 1:57 PM

Thurs High: 89.2 @ 4:16 PM
0.00″ of rain

*NCL-Tiger Fuel – Lovingston

0.00″ of rain

The current surface map shows the old stubborn upper level low in the area. A frontal boundary begins working toward us for the weekend.
Current-Sat Surface Map

The National Forecast Map, shows low pressure moving NE of Nelson today with an advancing front. Chances for severe storms are in the forecast over the weekend. It is mentioned in the hazardous weather outlook by the NWS:

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN…FRIDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY
A COLD FRONT WILL SLOWLY MOVE THROUGH THE REGION THIS WEEKEND…
WITH SCATTERED THUNDERSTORMS EXPECTED FRIDAY THROUGH SUNDAY. A FEW
OF THESE STORMS MAY BECOME SEVERE WITH A THREAT OF LOCALLY DAMAGING

Camp Jeep 2007 kicked off Thursday at Oak Ridge Estate in Arrington. NCL was there for the beginning!

Yvette dirt trail
Anyone that knows Yvette, knows she doesn’t mind getting dirty. Camp Jeep is no exception! She was right out in the middle of the dirt trail getting the photos!

Youngster signing
Camp Jeep is about 10,000 folks packing into Oak Ridge Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Above is a future Jeep owner signing the board at Camp Jeep.

TS-Video
OK. Not to be outdone, Yvette got this shot of me doing the video of Camp Jeep. I use to shoot video all of the time in my video (TV) career long before Nelson County. Thankfully, Al Stacey, bought the latest and the greatest HD video camera for his chopper and I am getting to use it to capture stuff like Camp Jeep. The gear I once carried was about 6 X this big

diving
You wouldn’t think about diving in Nelson County, but at Camp Jeep you can!

snow slide
When it’s 90 degrees you don’t think about snow either, but Camp Jeep has figured out a way to go snow tubin’ in the middle of summer!

Yvette posed
Yvette hates it when I post pictures of her on our site. I mean hates it!. But you know, she has so much fun at these types of events, so what the heck! She was really spending lots of time getting really neat photos that you are seeing here.

Rock climbing
Okay, just the thought of going up there kind of makes me uncomfortable! – Well not really….

Harris son-1
We aren’t sure which of Danita Harris’ son this is, but we know it’s one of them! I am getting dizzy from just looking at this! But it looks like lots of fun!

Look for much more Camp Jeep live coverage here on the NCL website over the weekend.

Sunset on Plank Road
Nelson County, VA

Christina Kline, our Nelson Outdoors writer, caught this nice sunset at the intersection of Rockfish Gap & Plank Rd. We did manage to see some peeks of sunshine on Wednesday, but most of the day was overcast. For the most part rainfall was in the morning not the afternoon hours. There were some very heavy downpours on the other side of the mountain in Waynesboro, but not much here.

Today is the opening day for Camp Jeep so look for lots of Jeeps to stream in over the next several days as the events goes for 3 days. The weather will be mild, but chances for showers and thunderstorms will loom through the weekend. It won’t be an all day rain event, but scattered at almost anytime across the area. We really don’t have anything to get us cleared out for about a week. By next Wednesday we will see a system swing through to make the clouds clear.

Thursday will start out mostly sunny except for patchy fog, but as the day wears on clouds will increase with chances for afternoon thunderstorms again..We talked about a stubborn upper level low yesterday, and today it holds on. Until that low and a frontal boundary that approaches in a day or so get out of here it will continued to be more unsettled weather wise. We will see a bit more sun today, but nothing to write home over.

Chopper Anvil
Photography by Tommy Stafford

Thunderstorm Anvil from Cardinal Helicopters, Inc Chopper

Nelson County, VA

The views you can get here in the mountains of Nelson County are unbelievable. The views you can get here in Nelson County when flying along at 2000 feet are even better! Above is a shot of a thunderstorm anvil off in the distance toward the Blue Ridge. Trivia, once you see a thunderstorm anvil like the one shown above, it means the storm has reached its mature stage and is actually loosing steam so to speak.Though they can still be mean for a long time after reaching a mature stage. The anvil on top is formed when winds way up in the atmosphere blow the top off of the storm forming that classic anvil look. Neat! Al Stacy of Gaia Homes in Nellysford was the pilot in his Robinson R-44 chopper. His helicopter company is Cardinal Helicopters, Inc in Charlottesville. We grabbed this shot on the was back to the landing pad. We’ll be seeing more of these typical summertime thunderheads over the coming days as a stubborn low pressure area keepos chances for scattered thunderstorms in the forecast for the next 4-6 days! More on that in a bit. Thanks Al for the view from above!

Yep it’s finally here, Camp Jeep starts Thursday, though preparations have been underway for the past month. For those of us living here we know what this means. Lots of traffic, lots of people, wheew! But this is a really great time for Jeep owners to get together and enjoy a great time! Camp Jeep runs for 3 days starting Thursday. Yep, Yvette and I will be there bringing you some of the sights and sounds from there as well. Be looking for updates over the next several days. Wish I could say the weather was going to be great, but we do have several chances for thunderstorms for near future. Though it will make some nice muddy trail runs! That is actually fun. Ever been muddin’?

Wednesday will be a mostly cloudy day. Local satellite shows a large area of cloudiness across our area thanks to an upper level low pressure area over Virginia. If you care to see it in action, when you click on thet local sat link, play the animation and you can see the counterclockwise swirl. That’s classic for a low pressure. That low pressure area will hang around for the next few days until we get something in here to push it out. A front will try toward the end of the week but it will be slow to clear out the area.

Here’s the numbers from Tuesday: As of 10AM this morning

*NCL-Nelson County Life Magazine – Greenfield
Tues High: 80.0 degrees @ 13:33 PM

The weekend has been beautiful thus far. After a beautiful Friday afternoon & Saturday, Sunday promise to be more of the same! Sounds like a great time to get out and go taste some wine! Above, Alexandra Heilbronner, shows off a few of the wines at Delfosse Winery & Vineyard in Faber just off Route 29 at Hickory Creek Road. If you’ve never dropped in at Delfosse, you’ve gotta go there. Beautiful terraced vineyards on the mountainsides surround the grounds. It is a breathtaking place to go sit outside and try out the wines. Mmmmm, maybe chilled like, 2005 Chardonnay Reserve, it’s one of my favorites! And perfect weather this weekend for it! Tell Claude, Alex, and the crew we say howdy!

You won’t be able to special order weather better than this weekend’s. Temperatures continue be in the lower 80’s with cool northerly winds. It’s just about as perfect as you can get.
