Wednesday was a hot and humid afternoon. There were some very isolated thunderstorms across the area but most of them were very far south. Dewpoints were running near 70 degrees at times during the day. Pretty much anytime they get above 60 it feels sticky. High pressure will help lower the dewpoints a tiny but, but after an air temperature of 90 degrees it doesn’t really matter much. Hot is hot!

Here’s the numbers from Wednesday: As of 11:59 PM EDT Wednesday night

*NCL-Nelson County Life Magazine – Greenfield
Wed High: 93.0 degrees @ 1:42 PM
0.00″ of rain

0.00″ of rain

*NCL-Tiger Fuel – Lovingston
Wed High: 93.9 degrees @ 4:30 PM
0.00″ of rain

The current surface map continues to show a high pressure ridge nearby. This will keep chances for thunderstorms at or below 10% and very hot conditions.
Current-Sat Surface Map

On the National Forecast Map, with high pressure to our north today, humidity will be slightly less for one day before building back in on Friday through next week. Very isolated chances for a t-storm exist today mainly in the mountains. Otherwise the forecast looks the same as yesterday!

Lovingston : NCHS Class of 1977 Reunion : Pics

Much has changed in 30 years. The NCHS Class of 1977 were Seniors when the Vocational Complex was first completed. Several additions later, including relocation of the Middle School (called ‘Junior High’ in 1977), the facility was nearly unrecognizable to those living outside of the County. Many took the opportunity to explore the old and new; taking family members on a scavenger-type hunt through the building with frequent shouts of, “Here’s my old locker!” and “Hey, where did the library go?” While many classmates still live locally, some came from as far away as Florida, Pennsylvania and Maryland for the event.

If you are a member of the 1977 Graduating Class and missed this reunion, mark your calendars for sometime in 2009 when this class of ‘Governor Alumni’ will turn 50 years old. This opportunity cannot pass unnoticed! To be included next time, contact Sue Woodson : sue.woodson@earthlink.net

Roanoke : Weather Station mistaken for bomb!

Our friend, Jeff Vogelgesang, of Heards Mountain sent this in this morning. I just had to laugh, lots! I agree we have to exercise caution in this post 9-11 world, but…….

Note to Josh Palumbo at Wintergreen Nature Foundation, please don’t let them do this to our station up there!

From: Jeff
Date: August 1, 2007
Subject: Weather station mistaken for bomb

From the Roanoke Times

Weather station mistaken for bomb

A bomb-squad recently blew up a “suspicious looking box” mounted to a tree near the Lewis-Gale Medical Center in Roanoke, Virgina. Turned out that the “bomb” was actually an amateur weather station placed there by an employee of the Center.
An employee had placed a putty-like substance around the box to make it weather proof.

The investigation is concluded and no criminal charges will be filed.

Bo Holland Phone Company @ RVCC
Afton, VA

We’ve all had to call the phone company from time to time to have them come out and fix the lines. Don’t you just love it when they ask you all of those stupid questions. Have you made sure your phone is plugged in? Does this affect all of the phones in your home? Are you calling us from the phone line affected? And my personal favorite, can you please go to the phone interface on the side of your building and unplug there, then plug in a standard phone to see if you have dial tone there? Can you whistle dixie, stomp your feet, and click your heels three times? There’s no place like home Dorothy! Where are my ruby red slippers?

I must admit the scene above got my attention as I drove up to the Rockfish Valley Community Center Monday afternoon. Bo was busy going through all of the steps mentioned above to make sure Verizon would come out to fix the phone line. Mmmm, can you say lightning strike Sunday night…of course that wouldn’t have anything to do with it!

That was some pretty wicked lightning. Monday we did see some scattered storms, but nothing like Sunday. Most areas remained dry, though the clouds hung in there for most of the morning with some sunshine in the afternoon. We’re headed out of this overcast afternoon thunderstorms scenario for most of the week. Days will be hot and partly cloudy.

Peach Camp

Camp Peach @ Saunders Brothers
Piney River, VA

Okay, Camp Jeep 2007 is now part of the record books. Most of the Jeeps with their little orange flags waving in the breeze have gone home. You know ….. Yvette and I are both are Jeeps owners, several times over, but like we told our friend, Laurel Lee from Amherst the other night @ Camp Jeep taking pics, “We own Jeeps, but we aren’t sure we even understand this whole Camp Jeep thing. It’s a great for the lodging and local restaurants, but those of us living here know it’s sure nice to have the roads back!

We couldn’t help but laugh this weekend when we were out delivering the August issue. We cut across from Piney River on Route 56 to Saunders Brothers and saw the sign above in the picture. Camp Peach! Love it!

Paul Saunders and his family had a big weekend there. Paul even served us up a cup of great smooth ice cream. Yummy! Thanks Paul! The peaches are in! Here’s a couple more pics:

Speaking of Saunders, we are following one of Paul’s sons, Tom, on a scout trip to Wyoming with Troop 32 from Nelson County. Steve Crandall is with him along with others. Steve’s wife, Heidi, is keeping us briefed on their progress out there. She gave us an update late Sunday night on their progress. You can read about their adventures by clicking here.

Finally the dam broke for some of us in Nelson on Sunday. We got 1.55 inches of rain here at Nelson County Life Magazine in Greenfield near Ashley’s Market. Other stations got just under an inch. We lost power for about two hours, but you know, it was really nice, just sitting back and watching the lightning off in the distance and listening to the rain. Our friends, Rick & Sarah from Covesville Store were here having a burger on the grill. Great evening just watching the storms.

We have one more day today of scattered storms before we get back to hot weather with minimal chances for rain. After today it’s going to be hot and dry once again for several days.

Here’s the numbers from Sunday: As of 11:59 PM EDT Sunday

Yes, folks you’ll begin to see the number of Jeeps on the roads around here go back to normal starting today. But it looks like they had a great event for Camp Jeep 2007.

Though there’s still plenty of other events left on the table for the remainder of the year, Wintergreen Performing Arts held its Festival Finale Saturday night on the mountain at Wintergreen. It included the final Academy Concert, a pre-concert talk by Larry Alan Smith, Artistic and Executive Director of Wintergreen Performing Arts and Classics III. Part of the evening was to honor outgoing WPA President John Claman, violinist Robert McDuffie and conductor Peter Oundjian. The dinner was a relaxed and enjoyable celebration of WPA.
