There is no word on the condition of the people in the home at this hour, but the search continues.

Earlier this week the Nelson County Home Builders Association held their annual Christmas party at Stoney Creek Bar & Grill in Nellysford. Heidi Crandall of Tectonics II was nice enough to grab these photos and send them along! Heidi says the turnout was great and the food delicious!

Everyone had a great time and got the chance to mingle and see other area builders who seldom get the chance to talk with each other during the year when construction projects are ongoing. Mmmm, think that’s Sharon Stacy there!

Larry Cabanass, left, and Jace Goodling extend a thank you to all the sponsors who helped support the Christmas dinner this year.

All of these builders, families, and their sub contractors work very hard all year long. Congrats!

Discovery Center Nears Completition
Wintergreen Mountain
Devil’s Knob, Virginia

Discovery Center

I was upon Devil’s Knob yesterday talking to the Tim Merrick and Julie Benner with Wintergreen Real Estate’s Discovery Center. It’s within days of opening and folks it’s a very nice place! It’ll have the Black Bear Cafe inside with great gourmet coffee, along with sandwiches and soups all day from breakfast through dinner, and wi-fi wireless internet! There’ll be more coming out about this in the next few days, but their open house is December 28th from 3-5 PM. We’ll see you there!

There will be some light freezing precip move through the area this morning. Most of this is sleet. Surfaces in the valley are just above freezing, but there could be some light accumulation on the mountains.

Tuesday was a pretty uneventful day. For the most part it was sunny, but a thin layer of clouds moved in by afternoon keeping things cool, but not cold. We reached a high here in the valley of 47 degrees at NCL-Nelson County Life Magazine. Last night was not as cold as the previous night. We didn’t see any of those teens, like those we saw on Tuesday morning since the clouds kept the temps up.

Today will be a mostly cloudy day. We’ll see some peeks of sun, but nothing to get too excited over. I can’t even rule out a stray snow shower up in the mountains, but again nothing to care about. There is a chance of snow or sleet early Friday morning and then again Friday night perhaps mixed with some light freezing rain, but the system is looking less impressive now than yesterday. It looks like better chances for just plain rain over the weekend, but again not a widespread event that would squash any weekend plans.

I really want to look at the models that come out Wednesday night to get a better handle on this, but right now none of it looks impressive unless something dramatically changes.

Clouds in the Valley
Nellysford, Virginia

stoney creek clouds

Monday was a big contrast to the weekend. The winds settled down for the most part Monday afternoon, though we didn’t warm up very much. In the valley it only reached the mid 40’s for about 30 minutes then began falling. Upon the mountain at NCL-Wintergreen Nature Foundation the temps never made it above freezing. They topped out at a cold 27.7 degrees for a Monday high.

Last night it was another cold one with mid teens to low 20’s for everyone. NCL-Nelson County Life Magazine here in Greenfield reached a low of 15.8 degrees, while NCL-Wintergreen Nature Foundation upon Devil’s Knob had a low of 17.8° Over at NCL-Hatcreek Farm Horseshoe Mountain, they had a morning low of 17.6° Today will be a bit warmer as winds kick around to the south bringing in slightly milder air. Not a big warm up, but a touch warmer than yesterday. The mountain should make it briefly above freezing into the upper 30’s by afternoon.

Tonight we’ll see increasing clouds which will help keep it warmer than last night. Wednesday will be partly sunny and seasonal. Thursday we’ll see chances for rain, sleet & snow in the forecast overnight. Right now it looks like we have even less moisture than last weekend’s system had to work with, so I am not impressed with this one yet, but stay tuned!

We first told you about Coby Etchison’s Christmas Project here. He wanted to fill up 10 baskets with food for needy families here in Nelson by this past weekend. Well apparently Coby made his goal and then some!

His mom dropped us an update this morning:

Taking The Slopes At Wintergreen
Wintergreen Mountain, Virginia

molly on the slopes

Before we head off into the weather, just gotta say it was a beautiful, though windy, day upon the mountain at Wintergreen, Sunday. In the picture above, Molly Brown, with Wintergreen’s Adaptive Ski Program, takes a run down one of the slopes. (You’ll be reading much more about Molly in the coming days!) They had a great day on Sunday as they dedicated the new addition to their headquarters. You can read more about that by clicking here. Also check out several other new weekend additions to recent posts on your left.

What a rock and roll weekend! Though we didn’t get much in the way of wintry precip in the valley, the mountains did get a fair amount of icing Saturday night into Sunday morning. As we talked about might happen last week, this past weekend’s event was more or less an icing event. In the valley we got about two hours of icing. There was a critical period where the temperature fell to the freezing mark briefly and allowed for a light glaze on exposed surfaces. On the mountain at Wintergreen, our NCL Weather Watcher, John Taylor reported slick parking lots, sidewalks, etc, but WPOA kept the roads clear. We were up there Sunday and still noticed lots of ice in the trees along the BRP.

By far the weather headline this weekend was the very high winds on Sunday afternoon. Gust of 50+ MPH at times caused power outages in many areas. Here at NCL Magazine we lost power around 1:30PM for a couple of hours. Crews had to cut up several trees that fell on area roads as well. By late Sunday night the High Wind Advisory had been canceled for Nelson, but remained for areas along and west of the BRP until daylight.

Today will still be breezy with gusts up to 30 MPH on occasion, but the trend will be toward decreasing winds as the day wears on. Tonight promises to be a very cold one as the winds decrease and skies remain clear. By the end of the week we could be looking at the chance for snow again around Thursday. A similar scenario just like the one we had over the weekend is setting up, but this has more of a snow feel to it, at least this far out. Definitely something I’ll be watching and updating as we get closer.

Sunday afternoon was a big day for folks involved in Wintergreen’s Adaptive Ski Program. After lots of hard work they officially cut the ribbon on an addition to their headquarters. The addition added roughly 30% more room to what was a cramped facility where they operate the program from.
