Friday started with a bit of sun, but clouds and eventually showers took over in the afternoon and continued Friday night. Here at NCL-Nelson County Life Magazine in the Rockfish Valley we already had about .47″of rain by 10:30 PM Friday night. On the mountain at our NCL-Wintergreen Nature Foundation site they’d already picked up .59″of rain by the same time. Head south to NCL-Hatcreek Farm on Horseshoe Mountain and they already had more than 1.00″in the bucket. Back at the foot of the mountain at NCL-Wintergreen Winery in Beech Grove, they had about .78″in the gauge. Be sure to click on the drop down menu on your upper left of this screen to get the latest totals and conditions from any of our NCL-Weathernet station

By Sunday afternoon we will likely see a mix of rain, snow and sleet.

Sunset Over The Mountains
Afton, Virginia

winter sunset

The great thing about living in Nelson County in the shadows of the Blue Ridge is the wonderful views you have just about daily. Beautiful sunsets like this one toward Devil’s Knob from the valley. The last week of year is always a weird one to me. You can’t really get much done, nor do most folks, including me, want to do anything. You’re just kind of decompressing from Christmas and waiting for New Years!

Wednesday started out cloudy and cold, it stayed that way for most of the day until late afternoon when the sun finally started coming out and eventually warmed things up 46° here at NCL-Nelson County Life Magazine in the Rockfish Valley. Upon the mountain at NCL-Wintergreen Nature Foundation they reached a chilly high of only 34° degrees and were back below freezing before sunset yesterday. The rain that was in the area for most of the day stayed to our southeast and since the air here was so dry, none of it reached the ground for the most part. Though SE we did see some scattered showers.

Skiing & snow sports continue at Wintergreen Resort. Though they have not been able to make snow during some of the daylight hours, the temps have been cooperating at night, really a perfect mix! I spoke to our friend Bruce Flight from Richmond Wednesday afternoon. He was on the mountain with friends skiing and boarding. Bruce said it was pretty cold and windy, with lots of folks arriving. You can get the latest slope conditions from the resort by clicking right here.

Thursday will be a day of transition a day in the weather office. Though the day starts off with some clouds, we’ll see mostly sunny skies by afternoon. Thursday night clouds beging increasing in advance of a new system that promises rain Friday, a lull Saturday, and more rain Sunday. I cannot rule out some of the rain falling as a wintry mix up in the mountains over the weekend, but as I said earlier this week, not impressive right now. To the west in the Highlands and WV there is a better chance, but not impossible here, again we’ll have to watch closer as the weekend arrives. Right now it’s more of a rain event.

By next week as we head into the new year, look for colder temps settling into the region.

Nick Celebrates Post Christmas
Greenfield / Afton, Virginia

Nick Cane

Christmas 2007 is in the history books and Santa is on his way back to the North Pole for another year. One of our beagles, Nick, shown above, celebrated in style with his Christmas candy cane, actually rawhide chew! Christmas is significant for Nick since it was exactly a year ago on Christmas Eve when he was pitched over the fence at Almost Home Adoption Center just north of Lovingston. Since we’d recently had to put down Millington our other beagle about a month before, we decided to give Nick a new home. Think he’s adjusted well over the past year!

Tuesday didn’t seem very much like Christmas weather wise across Virginia. The afternoon temperature reached a high of 56° here at NCL-Nelson County Life Magazine in the Rockfish Valley. You jump a few thousand feet up at NCL-Wintergreen Nature Foundation on Devil’s Knob and the high temperature on Christmas Day was still pretty warm at 52°.

Regardless, it’s been a good holiday for sking on the mountain at Wintergreen. Wintergreen Resort’s latest report shows several slopes open with snow making underway as of Tuesday night. You can click here to get the latest slope conditions and openings from the resort.

Wednesday will be more or less a cloudy day. We’ll have the chance for light showers as a weak low pressure area passes nearby. I can’t even rule out some sleet in the mountains, perhaps a little wet snow, but with all of the sunshine and warmth from yesterday, just don’t think it’s going to be a factor. We might see some sunshine by late afternoon just before dark, but most of the day will be cloudy with scattered showers developing.

By Friday night look for rain chances to increase with chances continuing into the weekend. There is a slight chance for snow overnight in the higher elevations over the weekend. We’ll just have to see how that shakes out, right now I am not impressed with the chances.

Christmas Time at The Afton Group
Greenfield / Afton, Virginia

Afton Hdq

No it didn’t snow last night and you missed it! We just wanted to put something up to keep everyone in the Christmas spirit as we head toward Santa’s arrival! First Yvette and I want to say thank you to everyone who’s been our faithful readers & supporters of the magazine over the past three years. Can you believe it? This coming year marks our third year! We’ll celebrate that on April 1st, how fitting! We want to thank all of the advertisers in our magazine as well. And especially those guys who have been with us from day one back in 2005. You took a chance and we hope we’ve never let you down.

Christmas is such a special time here in Nelson. It’s a beautiful place filled with wonderful people. Yvette and I are proud to call this our home and proud of the wonderful friends we have made since moving to Nelson a few years ago. I was raised in a special place during my childhood as well. Back in West Tennessee, Christmas was always special. We lived on a wide open farm, though flat, no mountains in West Tennessee near the Mississippi River, it was a such a wonderful place to grow up. Cows grazing in the pasture, horses , and just wide open space like here in Nelson. Every Christmas my mother would bake cookies and make a Christmas supper like none other. We always had a live tree in the house, a tradition we carry on here in Virginia. I never could get use to the artificial ones. Though my folks do have one now. It is much easier! On a rare occasion we’d get a Christmas snow, those were the really special.

Today my folks live in that very same house on the farm I was raised in from birth. Though Nelson has become our home, Christmas always reminds you of how special those past Christmas memories are. Yvette and I hope each of you have a very special Christmas this year with many memories too!

Weatherwise, just look at the picture above of our office and dream of a white Christmas, that’s about as close as we’ll get! No promise of snow here in Central Virginia, not even a chance for rain until we get toward the end of the week. This past weekend was pretty nasty, and though the possibility of severe weather never developed, the fog hung in there until late Sunday when skies cleared and the winds picked up. We did get some much needed rain with amounts varying from .63″ here at our office in Greenfield to 1.43″ inches upon the mountain at NCL-Wintergreen Nature Foundation.

Christmas Day will seasonal. By the time we get to the weekend, rain renters the forecast. There was a chance for snow in earlier models Wednesday night, but that’s off the table now and it looks too warm for the weekend to be snow, though it is possible in the mountains at night. We just have to keep an eye on that between now and then, you know my saying about those extended forecasts! Don’t believe em’

Skiing @ Wintergreen
Wintergreen Mountain, Virginia

merideth snow

Friday was last of day of Fall. Winter officially arrived Saturday morning at 1:08 AM. That’s the shortest day of the year, from here on folks, summer lovers like me, can relish in the fact that the days will begin getting longer, just a tad from here on. Sorry mom. She loves Winter and always jokes around with me when the days begin getting shorter in the summer knowing that Winter is on the way (Okay, since I initially prepared the forecast, our faithful reader, John Taylor, upon the mountain sent us a comment letting me know that technically it’s not the shortest day, but the day with the least daylight, you are correct John!). Speaking of the mountain at Wintergreen Resort it certainly looks like winter there. The slopes closest to the Mountain Inn are open and folks have been out skiing this week. John also mentioned in his post Friday evening that Eagle’s Swoop had also opened, that is great news! You can click on the highlighted sentence just before this to get the latest slope reports from the resort.

Speaking of Wintergreen, want to say thanks to Meridith Young at Black Rock Gallery in the Mountain Inn. She grabbed some shots of the light snowfall this past Friday morning.

We will be mostly cloudy all weekend long with increasing chances for measurable rain as we get toward the end of the weekend. Rain chances increase on Saturday night into Sunday. Saturday starts pretty foggy early with drizzle in throughout the day. Sunday brings more widespread rain, isolated severe thunderstorms, (see graphic below and text) and windy conditions.

Our prospects for a white Christmas aren’t very good, right now about 10%. The night after Christmas gets a little more interesting. A possible new storm is in the mix, we’ll just have to see what the temperatures do by then.

And finally we’ll be doing our our first annual special Christmas forecast Sunday and Monday evening, think Yvette’s even gonna help out so be to check back for that!

Snowfall @ Wintergreen Resort
Wintergreen, Mountain Virginia

snow-4

Update: 12:55 PM EST : Snow flurries occurred in the Rockfish Valley, but moderate accumulating snowfall occurred on the mountain at Wintergreen Resort. At NCL-Wintergreen Nature Foundation, Devil’s Knob @ 3500 feet, the temperature is 26.4° as of 12:55 PM

Early this morning we saw snowfall upon the mountain at Wintergreen Resort. Merideth Young of Black Rock Gallery on the mountain, grabbed these shots and sent them along. Obviously, lots of the snow you see is man made from the snow guns, but they did get a respectable covering. Enough of a covering, that Merideth tells me they had the snow melt out on the sidewalks!
