The Dogwood Nears Opening
Nellysford, Virginia

Dogwood sign

We’ve been telling you here and here about the anticipated opening Nellysford’s newest restaurant called The Dogwood. For well over a year and a half restaurant owners, Dennis and Kathy Hunt have been trying to get the restaurant open in the old Rockfish Garden Center. An untimely death by one of the business partners set the progress of the restaurant back considerably. Then difficulty in getting refrigeration units in place continued the saga. In November of 2007 they thought the doors would soon open, only to be delayed again.

This past Saturday the sign for the restaurant went up along Route 151 through Nellysford, and we have been told that as soon as the health department gives them the final inspection and green light, the door will open! It should be a matter of days.

We”ll keep you posted!

New AT&T Wireless Site Behind the Wintergreen Fire Department
Nellysford, Virginia

Cell tower

We’ve been telling you about AT&T Wireless’ installation of a new cellular / wireless tower in Stoney Creek late last year. Though no official confirmation of them making the site live has been announced, several users that have AT&T Wireless plans let us know the service has been working for the past several days. Great news for folks who have been wanting better cell coverage in the valley. Now the bad news…. It’s not very good so far.

Bruce Flight of Richmond who has a home in Stoney Creek, dropped us this e-mail Sunday with his observations:

As I was driving back to Richmond after the long Christmas holiday, I was more then excited to see my cell phone pop on when I approached the Wintergreen Fire & Rescue station, so I couldn’t wait to get back this weekend and enjoy the use of my cell phone.

NOT… while the AT&T cellular service and tower maybe a good thing for the folks at Wintergreen Fire & Rescue, in my opinion; it’s a complete bust for the faithful paying regular subscribers of AT&T cellular service. The bottom line is the service is poor at best unless you are fortunate enough to have built on a hill or live/drink at Stoney Creek Bar & Grill.

Here’s my non-scientific assessment of the service:
-Driving out of Stoney Creek on 151 East – loss of service between the Baptist church and the antique store.
-Driving out of Stoney Creek on 151 West – loss of service at Basic Necessities/Valleymont.
-Driving within Stoney Creek:
-Stoney Creek West – loss of service between Wood Nettle Lane and Creekside Close
-Stoney Creek East – loss of service between bike path and Logan Place and pick’s up a little when you climb the hill between Tuckahoe #2 and #3.
-Monocan Drive – loss of service between Hunter Point and Hidden Springs Lane

I also wanted to see if I had service while walking my beloved dog around the bike path on Lake Monocan. Just in case I drop due to “the big one”, I wanted to know whether I could count on my cell or my good old Lassie four legged friend – needless to say I’m in trouble but here you go:

-Starting from the Lakeside entrance on Lakeside Close – very weak signal as I walk around the backside of the townhomes facing Lake Monocan.
-No service pass the dam and by Lake Monocan’s beach & picnic area.
-No service on Hidden Springs Lane.
-Service begins to pick-up as I cross Hunters Point between Monocan #2 and #1
-Service continues well until the path turns left by the fire pond towards Stoney Creek East and becomes weak or no service.
-Little or no service from bath path on Stoney Creek East to Lakeside again.

That’s my non-scientific research!
Regards,
Bruce.

Thanks for your observations Bruce! And anyone else that has noticed any coverages let us know, would be nice to compare.

We haven’t gotten any official word fro AT&T Wireless as to whether the poor coverage might be that they are just in a test phase with improved quality later. We’re going to check on it and let you know!

Morris and Anne Foster dropped us an e-mail about this dog that recently showed up at their home. We don’t have a picture yet, but will post it as soon as we do. Meanshile if anyone knows about this pet, please give Morris or Anne a call.

Here’s what they sent us:

We had a brown and white medium sized dog to show up at our house on Monday (January 6th} looking very emaciated and really shy. She is not letting us get our hands on her to check her blue collar which is very tight. We are feeding her and she is content to stay even though our two dogs are not too pleased! She has a white stripe on her face and a white blaze on her chest and white large front feet. Looks like a mix of hound and maybe setter.. A very sweet dog that seems to be maybe a year old. When we can get a picture of her we will try to send it to you. It may be a local pet and we would love to find her owner. I don’t think she is a hunting dog. Any help would be appreciated. Saturday’s High Temp at NCL-Nelson County Life Magazine in the Rockfish Valley : 58.6° / 28.0° Sun morning low
Saturday’s High Temp at NCL-Wintergreen Nature Foundation on Devil’s Knob @ Wintergreen Mountain : 50.9° /23.9° Sun morning low

Friday started out cloudy and rainy but ended up beautiful, with a beautiful sunset over Devil’s Knob. With ample sunshine in the afternoon and a warm front through the area afternoon temps here in the Rockfish Valley neared the 70° mark! That’s pretty much over now as colder air is working into the area.

Saturday was fair and sunny with light winds, so another great day. Sunday look for increasing clouds with chances for showers in the afternoon. Earlier we thought there might be a chance for snow by Sunday night. Though I am not totally ruling it out, it looks like the low pressure area that would have made that possible is going to stay out in the Atlantic more than originally thought so out chances have greatly decreased.

By next week there is a chance for snow again around Thursday.

Next week will be considerably colder than the past week.

We continue our Nelson County Virginia music artists promotion this weekend. We’ve been hearing lots from Jan Smith all week long, next week we’ll have Nelson’s very own Lindsey Osborne on tap. Read lots more below and listen as we head out of today’s weather.

The hits just keep coming out of Blue Mountain Brewery in Afton. Mandi Taylor e-mailed us on Thursday to tell us about the release of their latest Ale. If you’ve been by there to try any of their locally brewed beers, there’s not a bad one, notta!!

Evil 8° is a Belgian style Dubbel Ale
. It is brewed in the Abbey style, following the tradition of the Trappist Monks. It uses imported caramelized Biscuit malt, Goldings hops and a unique strain of brewers’ yeast that actually comes from one of the six remaining Trappist monastery breweries. It comes in at 7.7% alcohol, and has a rounded sweet malt flavor that carries throughout the palate of the beer.

Mandi says it’ll be on tap and in six packs starting Friday! I’m getting mine!

Wednesday’s High / Low Temp at NCL-Nelson County Life Magazine in the Rockfish Valley : 68.4° / °
Wednesday’s High / Low Temp at NCL-Wintergreen Nature Foundation on Devil’s Knob @ Wintergreen Mountain : 52.5° / °

We enjoyed another mild day across Nelson County and Central Virginia Wednesday. Temperatures tried to make it to 70° once again but just couldn’t pull it out this time, but not by much. Many valley locations hit the mid and upper 60’s.

Thursday will start out pretty quiet, but as the day wears on clouds will increase and rain showers will develop by afternoon. Heavier rain will move in Thursday night into Friday morning before skies become partly cloudy Friday night into Saturday. By Sunday, look for clouds to once again increase with rain moving in by afternoon and evening, mixing with snow possibly. It’s a bit far out to know exactly what will happen, but there is the potential for this to be a significant system if all of the elements come together.

Forecasters with the Sterling office of the NWS make mention of their thinking in the Wednesday evening forecast discussion:

Uncertainty is somewhat higher for sun-Monday due to inconsistencies in
GFS model. Preference is toward 00z European model (ecmwf)/HPC which has shown
Superior performance during the past few months and good consistency
with potential storm late sun into Monday. New 12z European model (ecmwf) still shows a
coastal storm but a track a bit further inland. New 12z European model (ecmwf)
solution if correct would give a decent snow event for the
Appalachians mountains
with rain more likely over the major metropolitan
cities. Exact details still to be resolved over the next couple of
days.

Essentially they are talking about the different computer models and what they are projecting. By Friday we’ll have a better handle on what the situation looks like, but right now I’d say it warrants paying attention to. Again this would be Sunday evening into Monday morning at this time.

We continue our Nelson County Virginia music artists promotion this week. Read lots more below and listen as we head out of today’s weather.

Tuesday’s High / Low Temp at NCL-Nelson County Life Magazine in the Rockfish Valley : 73.8° / 58.6° – Rainfall through 9 AM – .06″
Tuesday’s High / Low Temp at NCL-Wintergreen Nature Foundation on Devil’s Knob @ Wintergreen Mountain : 68.9° / 51.4° – Rainfall through 9 AM – 0.00″

Tuesday was another nice day for the record books in Virginia. Mild temperatures again reaching the 70’s gave the thermostats and the pocketbook a break. By late afternoon winds began kicking up and continued through last night. Look for breezy conditions again today. Overnight Tuesday into this morning showers were scattered about the area, even a clap of thunder here and there. As I mentioned yesterday, lots of severe weather in the country’s mid-section. Back in Memphis where I once did on air television weather, tornado warnings were popping like firecrackers Tuesday afternoon. There was lots of widespread damage, but no major injuries in TN, tough a woman died in Arkansas before the storms moved across the Mississippi River. As the severe weather headed east, it lost much of it’s punch heading toward Virginia.

Wednesday will be another fairly mild day, though temps will be in the 60’s vs 70’s for afternoon highs. We’ll continue to see gusty winds on occasion to near 30 MPH. A better chance of rain is in the forecast Thursday and Thursday night. That one looks to be a pretty good rain maker. By the second half of the weekend on Sunday evening the forecast gets a little interesting. We could see snow and rain mixing, continuing into Monday. All in all the temperatures are headed back downward over the next few days, but no extremely cold weather on the horizon just yet.

Don’t forget we continue our local music artists promotion today. Read lots more below and listen as we head out of today’s weather.

Tuesday’s High Temp at NCL-Nelson County Life Magazine in the Rockfish Valley : 73.8°
Tuesday’s High Temp at NCL-Wintergreen Nature Foundation on Devil’s Knob @ Wintergreen Mountain : 68.9°

What an early peek at Spring we had Monday! Check out those high temps for the valley and mountains yesterday. Mid 70’s down below and mid 60’s on the mountains! While we were dealing with nice warm temps here in Central Virginia, much of the Midwest & Central US were dealing with tornadoes and severe weather.

We’ve been getting several nice comments about our addition of local music artists to our site last week. Jan Smith is currently our featured artist for the week. Here’s two of the most recent comments we got yesterday:

At: 12:31 PM EST Susan Viemeister of Garden Trade wrote:
“NCL website: I LOVE the new music on your web audio! Fabulous idea. And
we are fans of Jan’s too. Great work.”

At 6:44 PM EST Greg Heuer wrote:
“Thanks for all you do for us. Jan’s music is wonderful. I’m going download the album from iTunes. What a bargain! [gh]”

Appreciate the nice comments and we love Jan as well, she’s a great singer!

Tuesday will be another nice one folks! Look for temperature back in the 70’s once again. The only difference Tuesday will be increasingly gusty winds throughout the afternoon. By evening Tuesday some of the winds gusts will be kicking up to 25-30 MPH with gusts to near 40 overnight. Over the next several days our chances for rain will increase as well. We start off Tuesday night with rain continuing into Wednesday morning. A much better organized system make a run at us Thursday afternoon into Friday. By the weekend we are still looking at chances for snow by Sunday. That’s several days out, but we’ll continue to see how it develops. Temperatures begin to drop to seasonal normals by the weekend as well with overnight lows in the mid 20’s.

*OVERNIGHT: Mostly cloudy with showers developing across 50% of the area. Lows valley: 50-53° : Mountains: 47-50° Winds gusting SW 35-40 MPH late night.

Wednesday: Mostly cloudy early morning with lingering showers, then mostly sunny afternoon. Continued breezy & mild.
* Highs Valley: 60-63°
*On the mountains: 51-54°
*Winds: W 10-15 MPH with gusts near 40 MPH in the morning diminishing in the afternoon.
