Gary Wood

Press Release from CVEC

Lovingston, Va.
January 6, 2008

Central Virginia Electric Cooperative recently announced that its Board of Directors has named Gary E. Wood to serve as the company’s Chief Executive Officer and President. Wood assumed the top position on January 2 with the retirement of outgoing CEO, Howard Scarboro.
A long term employee at CVEC, Wood began his career in 1987 as an electrical engineer, was selected as the Planning Engineering Manager in 1991 and was promoted to Vice President of Engineering and Operations in 1999. Wood most recently served as the CVEC Senior Vice President, overseeing all functions related to wholesale energy purchases, distribution system engineering and operations management.
Wood received strong votes of confidence from both Scarboro and the CVEC directors. “Gary Wood was the first person that I hired after I arrived at CVEC and it was one of my best decisions, Gary brings a triple play of talents to the Cooperative’s table, with training and experience in three key areas; technology, business and leadership,” said Scarboro. “Gary has initiated or participated in many of the advancements occurring at CVEC since his arrival.”
Past-chairman, K.M. Beasley, Jr. of Buckingham County summarized the sentiment of the CVEC Directors, stating “Since that summer of 1991, Mr. Wood had key roles in virtually every aspect of the Cooperative’s success story.”
Wood commented on the expansion of his responsibilities: “I am honored to have been selected for this leadership position and I am dedicated to continuing the CVEC traditions of hard work and innovative practices in order to deliver the best energy value to the cooperative members. With the excellent Board of Directors and a staff of dedicated, highly-skilled employees, CVEC will work to build on the many successes it achieved during Mr. Scarboro’s tenure.”
Wood also announced additional promotions at CVEC. “I am pleased to name Bruce Maurhoff as the new Vice President for Engineering and Operations, while Joseph Key will move into the position of Engineering Manager. Both are outstanding employees and will play important roles in the Cooperative’s success in their new positions. CVEC is fortunate to have this depth of talent available within its ranks.”
About Gary E. Wood – Wood is a licensed professional engineer with a degree in electrical engineering from the University of Virginia and a Master of Business Administration from Auburn University. A native of Nelson County, he has served on the Nelson County School Board and is a past chairman of the Nelson County Board of Supervisors. Above, Mendi Goodwin shows the special of the day at her newly opened Vineyard Coffee House inside Flying Fox

“I wanted a latti or a cappuccino every now and then so I decided to open up the place!” That’s how Mendi Goodwin says she ultimately came up with the idea to place a coffee house inside the Flying Fox tasting room during the typically slower months of the year when many minds are on skiing. Not to worry, you can still buy wine, but Mendi approached owners Rich and Lynn Evans about opening the coffee house as an extension of Flying Fox. Up until recently many folks remember Mendi from the tasting room at Veritas Winery, She had been there for quite sometime prior to opening the coffee house. Her husband is still one of the chef’s at Veritas, so coming up with a few easy soup and sandwich ideas to compliment the coffee were a natural.

“We’re doing a lunch special of the day, so everyday might be something different. Anything from a Frito Chili Pie to a panini,” adds Mendi. In addition to the light lunch menu, Mendi is doing breakfast burritos and muffins too. “You’ve got Ashley’s, you’ve got Graves, they do really great breakfast sandwiches on biscuits and buns, but no one is doing a breakfast burrito,” says Mendi. They are serving three different kinds, bacon, mexican sausage, or a veggie burrito.

You can get your order to go, or sit down in front of the fire and enjoy!

Mendi says they will be open Monday through Saturday from 7 AM to 3PM.

Stop by and see her!

The finishing touches are being put on the newest branch of the UVA Community Credit Union in Nellysford. NCL has learned they will be opening the doors for business within the next few weeks sometime in late January or February. We first told you about their plans back in July of last year. Back then only dirt work was underway. We updated the story again here later in the summer.

If you’ve driven by lately you can tell they are getting close to finishing up.

We’ll let you know exactly when they will open in the coming weeks.

Weathercast by Tommy Stafford, Nelson County Life Magazine

Sunday’s High Temp at NCL-Nelson County Life Magazine in the Rockfish Valley : 66.7 /
Sunday’s High Temp at NCL-Wintergreen Nature Foundation on Devil’s Knob @ Wintergreen Mountain : 54.5°

Before we take off today, want to send out a big thanks to Peter Agelasto, IV over at Bluewall Media in Beech Grove. Peter worked with us yesterday to get our podcast squared away. You will notice the different red player button up top. We’re changing up the way some of our audio streams, so you’ll be seeing some subtle changes over the next few weeks. Also want to let everyone know about Mendy Goodwin’s opening of The Vineyard Coffee Shop inside the tasting room at Flying Fox. That’s right at Chapel Hollow Road & Route 151 where you turn for Rockfish River Elementary School. You can read the entire story on what she’s up to by clicking here.

What a big change in the air today! Sunday we reached the mid and upper 60’s for afternoon highs and the mountain even making the mid 50’s! Today will be even warmer with temperatures nearing the 70° mark. We’ll see a repeat of the those warm temps again Tuesday before a system swings through that night into Wednesday dropping temps and ushering in gusty winds. We won’t be headed back to the very cold weather like we saw last week, but certainly not 70° either!

By next weekend, we may actually be talking about snow once again! That’s a long way off, but we are keeping an eye on it.

Finally, we kicked off our promotion on local musical artists last week. Each week we’ll be selecting a local musical artist to highlight as we end the audio version of the weathercast. All of this week we’ll be featuring music from Jan Smith and her latest CD 29 Dances. Lots more information about her music is down below.

Weathercast by Tommy Stafford, Nelson County Life Magazine

A major change starting with this weekend’s audio version of the weathercast. We’ve been working to get this approved and got the green light this past week from our first musical artist, Jan Smith. We love her music and she’s absolutely fabulous! If you listen to the webcast version each day, you know I generally end it and go out with some kind of generic music bed. Then I got to thinking why not use music of our local artists from right here in and Nelson County, Virginia. I spoke to Jan about it and she’s the first we’ll be highlighting over the next week. Then on to others. We’ll highlight a track from one of their CD’s daily as we head out of the weathercast. We’re excited and proud to start doing this. Our area has some of the best musicians in the world and now folks anywhere in the world can take a listen. Yep, that goes for New Zealand. We have one listener there every morning! You can read more about what cut we’re playing at the bottom of the text portion of this weather.

Finally! We can say so long, at least for a bit, to the extreme cold temperatures we’ve been experiencing for the first few days of January. This weekend milder temperatures began working into the area as an arctic high pressure lost it’s grip as we get milder temps blowing in on southerly winds. The first part of the coming week, we’re talking mid 60’s to near 70° for afternoon high temps.

We had very light showers overnight Saturday across much of the area, but no one station received any substantial rainfall. Look for variably cloudy skies today across Nelson and Central Virginia, but we will see breaks in the clouds with sun peeking through from time to time. By Monday partly sunny skies work with very mild temperatures reaching near 70° degrees.

Quick reminder, if you want to check out the latest ski & slope conditions at Wintergreen Resort, simply slick on their logo up above.

This time of year has it’s own beauty like the shot above from here in Greenfield. The clouds as the sun makes it’s way up in the morning makes for a perfect picture!

Did your hat blow off yesterday and last night? The winds have been brutal over the past 36 hours and unfortunately we have one more day of it to go before they finally settle down somewhat Thursday afternoon. Still breezy, but not as gusty as we have seen. You might not pay as much attention to the wind if the temperatures were up, but with gusty winds blowing as high as 30-40 MPH at times, the wind chill vales have been at 0° or below. The wind woke us up here in Greenfield early Wednesday morning around 3AM when it started howling off of Devil’s Knob. I spoke with folks up in Afton who said they had also had some wind damage. Overnight lows have been in the single digits for two nights in a row upon the mountains. NCL-Wintergreen Nature Foundation never topped the freezing mark Wednesday. Their high only made it to a balmy 19 degrees! Don’t look for temps to make it above freezing Thursday either if you are in the mountains. It will be Friday before the mercury makes it above 32, but only to the upper 30’s then.

By the weekend, temperatures warm to the low & mid 50’s in the valley and upper 40’s to low 50’s mountains. We’re even talking 60° by next Monday. But lots of cold to go through between now and then.

Thursday night: Clear & cold again, less windy.

*Winds: NW 5-10 MPH becoming SW after midnight

Friday: Sunny and milder.
* Highs Valley: 43-46°

The weekend: Saturday , sunny & warmer with highs in the low 50’s valley and upper 40’s mountains. Sunday temps warm even more to mid 50’s in the valley, near 50° mountains. By the start of next week look for even warmer weather with afternoon highs around 60° on Monday.

Weather Watcher report from Wintergreen Mountain:

John Taylor wrote:
Great weather for the snowmakers! At 8:15 am it’s windy, 11.8F, overcast, and we
had a light dusting of snow over night. There is some minor fog near the ski
area with clear skies directly above. They have been making snow since
yesterday — Highlands getting some of that.

2007 had several weather surprises up it’s sleeve and now that we have our own NCL-Weathernet Stations scattered all over the county, we finally are able to look at some of the data coming from those stations. Here’s a few of the numbers. We’ll be adding the other NCL stations annual data throughout the coming week:

NCL-Nelson County Life Magazine – Greenfield / Afton, Virginia
Yearly High: 103° on August 3, 2007
Yearly Low : 16° on December 16, 2007
Wind Gust : 37 MPH on March 22, 2007
Rain Total : 22.68 for the year

NCL-Wintergreen Nature Foundation : Devil’s Knob Virginia : Wintergreen Mountain
Yearly High: 91° on August 25, 2007
Yearly Low : 8° on December 6, 2007
Wind Gust : 110 MPH on March 5, 2007
Rain Total : 39.10 for the year

Before we get into the forecast, for those of you wanting to check out the current slope conditions be sure to click on the Wintergreen logo up above.

New Year’s Day was fairly quiet across the area, but gusty winds sure made it feel chilly for much of the afternoon. At the office here in the Rockfish valley, we had gusts to around 20 MPH. On the mountain at our Devil’s Knob station they logged a 25 MPH gust. That’s going to be the real story over the next 48 hours as the gusty winds continue Wednesday driving wind chills down to zero or below from time to time. We’ll see a chance of light snow Wednesday morning. Can’t even rule out a light dusting east of the BRP, but this won’t be much of a system. Way back west near the VA-WV state line winter and heavy snow warnings were posted for more significant snowstorms. By Wednesday afternoon skies become partly to mostly sunny with very cold temps and gusty winds.

Look for low temps Wednesday night to be in the mid teens to near 20° valley, and around 4-7 degrees on the mountains. If we make it there, that will be the coldest weather of the winter season thus far. Brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr! By the weekend we begin a warm up into the mid & upper 50’s valley and mid 40’s to lower 50’s mountains.

*Winds: NE 15-25 gusting to 35.

Wednesday night: Clear & very cold.
* Lows Valley: 14-17° Wind chill near 0° or below by Thursday morning
*On the mountains: 6-9° Wind chills below 0° from time to time.

*On the mountains: 24-27° Wind chill near 7-12° from time to time
*Winds: NW 5-10 MPH

The remainder of the week: Friday , sunny & slightly warmer with highs in the mid 40’s valley and around 40° mountains.
