At The Capitol Building
Washington, D.C

Thanks to Betsy Smith of Roseland for dropping these photos our way. Girl Scout Troop # 249 got a real treat this past weekend on a trip to Washington.

Betsy tells us:

“The girls went on a special trip to DC for the weekend that started out with a visit at the National Zoo. While there, they were given a “back door” view of the invertebrate exhibit where they watched coddle fish, an octopus and spiders being fed. They also held sea creatures such as star fish, needle star fish and horseshoe crabs. That evening they enjoyed watching the fireworks over DC as part of the Cherry Blossom Festival. The next morning they visited the Arlington Cemetery and watched the changing of the guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier – very moving. They then headed into DC on the metro rail. This commuter system fascinated the girls – they learned quickly how to get on the “right” train and how to navigate the system, especially entering and exiting the metro stations! The metro trip ended at the Smithsonian where the girls visited the Museum of Natural History and the Air and Space Museum.

A very educational and fun trip for all!”

Not worry, you won’t find that kind of stuff at Ken & Yvonne Harris’ a.m. Fog on the Nelson-Albemarle County Line along Route 151 in Afton. They’re as close to the farm as you can get with plenty of fresh meats and vegetables.

They’ve already got; Asparagus, Lettuce, Cucumbers, STRAWBERRIES, strawberry onions (the best!!!), roasting potatoes, Idaho potatoes, carrots, green peppers, farm eggs, meat, and fresh baked bread.

And yea, they still have my favorite the trusty:

Not to mention all of the other vegetables, annual, and perennial plants along with lots of fruit trees ready for the spring planting! Spring is here!

I had someone say to me over the weekend they felt like they were in Seattle instead of Central Virginia. I couldn’t agree more! A stubborn easterly air flow that brings in these low clouds and drizzle held on right through the weekend. The upside to this is the needed rain. We are well on our way to making up for last year’s dry summer. And now’s the time to get it, because generally speaking mid summer tends to have less rain. Some locations in Nelson have already seen 11 inches or better of rainfall since January 1st! That is very good news.

Look for the clouds and sometimes drizzle to hang in there today early. Unfortunately we have a few more hours of this stuff before high pressure finally wins. I can’t rule out seeing some sun in places Monday, but it won’t be very much, especially early. If we do get some it will come later in the day. By Tuesday we’ll see more sun and of course warmer temps.

By the second half of the week, temps warm way up, but rain reenters the forecast too by Thursday night.

Christinia tells us:

“By the way, everyone should try the Irish Stout. So creamy and smooth… and it’s usually not my preferred genre of beer so for me to go for it as one of my faves is a big accomplishment for the brewers.”

Mmmm, sounds like that will be on the “must try” list Christina!

If you haven’t been over the see the folks at BMB you have to try the beer there, very yummy!

There’s something about early Spring. You begin seeing hints of green, and then wham, snowflakes! Where did they come from. That’s part of the ritual in moving from Winter to warmer weather. It can’t really decide what it wants to do. But there’s one decision you don’t have to fret over, that’s stopping in at Ken & Yvonne Harris’ a.m. Fog on the Nelson-Albemarle Line along Route 151. They are as close to the farm as you can get!

Wednesday started off cloudy and cold with sun coming out by afternoon and warming things up a fair bit. Milly Colella caught a great sunset recently over at the Rockfish Airpark near Spruce Creek and e-mailed that off to us. A beautiful ending to the day, thanks for the picture Milly! The northerly winds still kept it pretty chilly Wednesday if you were in the shade. Overnight we dropped back down with many locations seeing 20’s for low temperatures by this morning.

Today will start out with some sun then mostly cloudy skies the rule by afternoon with showers likely. A stray shower can’t be ruled out this morning, but the bulk of the rain will come later in the day and tonight. Depending on how much sun, if hardly any, we get early in the day will determine how cool the day stays. Right now the thinking is we’ll only reach the low and mid 50’s for afternoon highs due to the cloud cover and rain showers developing.

Rain continues overnight tonight with temperatures actually rising during the nighttime hours as a warm front moves across the area putting Nelson in the warm sector. By Friday we actually get into the 70’s even with showers continuing early. Thundershowers are possible late day Friday into Friday night as well.

By Saturday I think we’ll have some morning showers, but do believe some sun will work in for the afternoon. Temps stay relatively mild in the low and mid 60’s for valley highs and upper 50’s mountains.

Regional Current Surface Map via wunderground

Looking 12-24 Hours Ahead

Your Nelson County Life custom area forecast including: Spruce Creek, Montebello, Piney River and Arrington

Thursday: Morning sun and isolated showers, then cloudy with rain developing in the afternoon. Cooler.
* Highs Valley: 52-55° warmer if we get ample sunshine
*On the mountains: 46-49°
*Winds: SE 10-15 MPH
*OVERNIGHT: Rain. Temps rising overnight. Lows valley: 40-43° : Mountains: 38-41° : Winds: S 5-10 MPH

Friday: Cloudy early with showers then partly cloudy and much warmer.
* Highs Valley: 73-76°
*On the mountains: 64-67°
*Winds: SW 10-20 MPH
*OVERNIGHT: Scattered thundershowers. Lows valley: 52-55° : Mountains: 49-52° : Winds: SW 10-15 MPH.

The weekend has rain in the forecast until afternoon Saturday when skies become partly cloudy. Temps remain pretty fair during the period with mid 60’s for daytimes highs in the valley and around around 60° on the mountains. Overnight lows generally in the 40’s and 50’s.

Have a great Thursday everyone!
