Don’t you just love it when you see folks doing something good…No I mean really good. moving some place, taking a leap of faith, and doing in their heart what they know’s right. That’s Ken and Yvonne Harris. They’ve made Afton and the Rockfish Valley their home. Heck, they’re already raising the next generation of Harris’ now. Farming and farming right is the way they do things.

At a.m. Fog on the Nelson-Albemarle County Line along Route 151 in Afton. They’re as close to the farm as you can get with plenty of fresh meats and vegetables.

They tell me right now they have veggie start, 6 kinds of lettuce. spinach, kale, brocoli, cabbage. And soon they’ll have 26 types of heirloom tomatoes, sweet peppers, and a big selection of HOT HOT HOT HOT, did I say HOT, YIKES! peppers!

They’ve already got; asparagus, lettuce, cucumbers, STRAWBERRIES, strawberry onions (the best!!!), roasting potatoes, Idaho potatoes, carrots, green peppers, farm eggs, meat, and fresh baked bread.

And yea, they still have my favorite the trusty:
-Local “Happy Steer” Hormone and Antibiotic Free Meat
-Local Hormone & Antibiotic Free Chicken

Not to mention all of the other vegetables, annual, and perennial plants along with fruit trees ready for the spring planting! It’s time!

That new beautiful farm market is OPEN FOR BUSINESS NOW, and before long stop in for hot teas, coffee, muffins, and bread while you take a look around.

Our Christina Kline grabbed the beautiful shot above of the spring blooms near Greenfield, a sure sign of those warmer temps we’ve had lately. Many of our NCL Weathernet Stations have reported 80° or above lately. The weather has been so nice you can raise the windows and let the warm breezes in!

Saturday ended up being a fairly nice day overall. Though we started the first half of the day with showers and even thunderstorms.

John Taylor from Wintergreen Mountain wrote in Saturday morning to tell us about the brief thunderstorm they had up there. Our NCL-(TWNF) Nature Foundation Station shows they picked up just over a 1/3 of an inch of rain in that downpour, while other areas of the county only saw sprinkles. Then the sun came out.

The afternoon in most of Nelson was dry and warm with 80+ degree readings. The majority of thundershowers were to our SE by afternoon and though redevelopment may happen in the early evening hours of Saturday, the likelihood is becoming less and less. The bigger story will be colder temps funneling in behind the exiting cold front to our east. Some breezy conditions will occur overnight, but diminish a bit after midnight.

Showers and some pockets of sleet develop on Sunday. The possibility of snow showers exists Sunday night into Monday morning as temps drop to the low and mid 30’s valley and upper 20’s mountains.

We start out next week cool and dry, but warm back to the 70’s by late week.

Want to keep Pauline Kendall and her family in our thoughts for the coming days. As we wrote about yesterday, her dad Paul Shelton over near Lovingston, passed away in late February. He was our cover story in the August 2007 issue of NCL when Pauline, his daughter, and her family surprised him with his old Model A 1931 Ford all refurbished for a birthday gift. Mr. Shelton was a wonderful man and will be greatly missed.

Changing gears a bit, want to let everyone know about Blue Mountain Brewery’s re-release of their Rockfish Wheat beer. Yep, at 4PM Tuesday it was available again on tap and in bottles. This is my personal favorite so stop by and check it out! Mandi tells me they have plenty!

Thanks to Ann Strober of Nellysford for our weather photos today! She had to be quick, but yes, we finally had sun yesterday and Ann managed to grab some fantastic shots of this bee doing its thing in the brief Spring sun. Hope you didn’t wink Tuesday or you missed the sun!

Wednesday will be another dreary day in the morning, with some light drizzle possible. But like yesterday, we should see sunshine by afternoon in most locations and temps will warm even more. Most area squeaked out lower 60’s Tuesday in spite of the clouds early on.

By the end of the week, low and mid 70’s still look reasonable, but yes, rain again by Friday afternoon into at least part of the weekend if not Sunday as well.

Regional Current Surface Map via wunderground

*Winds: SW-5 MPH becoming S in the afternoon
*OVERNIGHT: Mostly cloudy with light scattered showers. Lows valley: 48-51° : Mountains: 44-47° : Winds: SW 5-10 MPH

Thursday: Partly sunny and even warmer.
* Highs Valley: 74-77°

*Winds: SSW-5 MPH
*OVERNIGHT: Becoming mostly cloudy. Lows valley: 53-56° : Mountains: 50-53° : Winds: S 5-10 MPH.

The remainder of the week has temps in the mid 70’s Friday with a chance of showers and partly sunny skies. Thunderstorms are possible Saturday with highs near 70°. Sunday light showers still are possible with temps cooling to around 60° for a valley high.

Have a great Wednesday everyone!

Afton : Blue Mountain Brewery : Rockfish Wheat Is Back!

Rockfish Wheat Bottle
One of Blue Mountain Brewery’s most popular beers is back beginning today at 4 PM!

Stop the presses! News FLASH! Well, sort of!

Mandi Smack, of Blue Mountain Brewery in Afton, e-mailed this morning to let us know that, my personal favorite, Rockfish Wheat is back, on tap and in six pack bottles, beginning today at 4PM! If you remember after they opened last fall this was so popular it didn’t take long for it to be all gone.

Rockfish Wheat Logo
Rockfish Wheat is an authentic Bavarian-style “Kristall Weizen” filtered wheat beer. The unique flavor created by the yeast has made this ale a summer favorite in the beer world.

OK Mandi, be sure to save me at least a couple of six packs! This stuff goes fast!

I just love summer!

Cheers!

August 2007 NCL Cover Small
The cover from our August 2008 NCL issue featuring our story on Mr. Paul Shelton and his 1931 Model A Ford making it back home.

As I have said over the past several months, it seems like I am writing about way too many fine people leaving us here in Nelson County. Today I got a phone call from the daughter of Mr. Paul Shelton, Pauline Kendall, that her father finally lost his very dignified battle with cancer on February 24, 2008.

You may remember our web story from last year here. And, Mr. Shelton’s was the cover story in our August 2007 (Page 22) issue of NCL. I knew Mr. Shelton for less than a year, but what a fantastic man.

PS Model A 2008
Mr. Shelton and his wife moments after his family surprised him with his old Model A Ford that had been completed reworked and put back in mint condition.

His daughter thought it would be a wonderful gift to have his old car restored and give it to him as a birthday gift. Mr. Shelton thought the car, from his younger days, was long gone, until last July when it was given back to him in top notch condition.

In those final weeks, Pauline tells me her dad never complained and never made it an issue that he knew he was about to make that final journey of The Long Way Home. How could any of us have known that title for the car story would have been such a fitting memorial to such a wonderful man.

I bet Mr. Shelton gets to drive that car everyday now!

We all will miss you Mr. Shelton.

Before we kick off today, want to recognize Nelson Girl Scout Troop #249. They got a chance to head up to Washington this past weekend and see many of the sights there. Click here to see much more on their trip. That’s always an exciting one to make!

Yesterday we talked about how much this place is resembling Seattle lately. Well, Monday didn’t disappoint us! In the photo above the low gray clouds and sometime drizzle held in like the shot on Pharsalia Road looking north back toward Cub Creek. Cool, damp conditions prevailed for most of the day, though a tiny bit of sun did appear for a brief time.

Don’t look for much improvement today either. Though high pressure (which usually means fair weather) is in the area, we have a terribly stubborn easterly flow of moisture from the Atlantic that’s keeping these low gray cloudy skies in place. I do think Tuesday has a better potential to see some limited sun later in the day, but it’s still going to be difficult until we get something in here to kick this nasty lingering mess out.

A series of systems approaching the area will keep some clouds in the area for the next several days, though we do have a window for some sun by mid week before heading back into showery conditions. Most of the models I am looking at right now have cloudy skies well on into next weekend, but they do overplay it many times, so let’s see how the next 48 hours plays out. The second half of the week has great potential to be nice and Spring like, at least if everything pans out.

The one good bit of news is the temperatures. We will begin to see some warming up over the next several days, and right now low and mid 70’s look likely on Thursday and Friday when we have more sun vs clouds.

Today’s cut is All Simple Path To Freedom from the CD 29 Dances.

Louisville, Kentucky native Jan Smith writes songs rooted in vibrant imagery and sincere, stark emotion. The artists whose music she grew up with — Merle Haggard, Nina Simone, and Townes Van Zant among many others – influence her work, as does the traditional bluegrass music of her new home in the mountains of central Virginia.

On April 4, 2006, Landslide Records released “29 Dances,” produced in Nashville by Bil VornDick (Alison Krauss, Ralph Stanley). The record features Johnny Hiland, Byron House (Sam Bush, Nickel Creek), Pat McInerney (Nanci Griffith), Randy Kohrs, David Talbot (the Grascals), Mark Fain (Ricky Skaggs), Robert Bowlin (Bill Monroe), Patty Mitchell, and Smith’s partner, Jeff Vogelgesang.
