Above, folks gather outside to hear about the newly opened Piney River Organics Farm. Tuesday, the plant held their official grand opening located at Black Eagle Farm.

Ralph Glatt, owner of Piney River Organics and Black Eagle Farm, explains how the chickens will eventually lay eggs in the highly automated facility.

The Black Eagle farm has been in the Glatt Family for over 20 years, but the farm itself dates back over 200 years. “We’re trying to promote the idea of the “traditional family farm.” The sense that we have everything. We will go into pig production as well this fall but we just can’t get everything done in one go,” says Ralph who already has hormone free sheep and cattle in a farm raised environment.

PRO-2-TS
Left, William P. Dickinson, VA Deputy Secretary of Agriculture and Forestry, along with Ralph Glatt and his wife make it official by cutting the ribbon to the facility that will produce about 28,000 organically certified eggs per day.

The facility is expected to be in operation next month.

Don’t you just love it when you see folks doing something good…No I mean really good. moving some place, taking a leap of faith, and doing in their heart what they know’s right. That’s Ken and Yvonne Harris. They’ve made Afton and the Rockfish Valley their home. Heck, they’re already raising the next generation of Harris’ now. Farming and farming right is the way they do things.

At a.m. Fog on the Nelson-Albemarle County Line along Route 151 in Afton. They’re as close to the farm as you can get with plenty of fresh meats and vegetables.

They tell me right now they have veggie start, 6 kinds of lettuce. spinach, kale, brocoli, cabbage. And soon they’ll have 26 types of heirloom tomatoes, sweet peppers, and a big selection of HOT HOT HOT HOT, did I say HOT, YIKES! peppers!

They’ve already got; asparagus, lettuce, cucumbers, STRAWBERRIES, strawberry onions (the best!!!), roasting potatoes, Idaho potatoes, carrots, green peppers, farm eggs, meat, and fresh baked bread.

And yea, they still have my favorite the trusty:
-Local “Happy Steer” Hormone and Antibiotic Free Meat
-Local Hormone & Antibiotic Free Chicken

Not to mention all of the other vegetables, annual, and perennial plants along with fruit trees ready for the spring planting! It’s time!

That new beautiful farm market is OPEN FOR BUSINESS NOW, and before long stop in for hot teas, coffee, muffins, and bread while you take a look around.

Thanks to Paul Purpura for today’s weather photo taken up at Wintergreen Resort. You know the warmer weather is just ahead when you start seeing the Wintergreen Performing Arts tent going up. They started assembling, this week, for the coming summer performances!

Most areas lucked out Tuesday morning as the temps stayed just warm enough to fend off any frost in the area. That’s not the story this morning. unlike the night before, Tuesday night the winds died down and skies were very clear rather than having some clouds hanging in to keep the heat in. Though we won’t know the extent of any frost damage just yet, it’s safe to say some buds got bitten back. The good news so I am told, is that many blooms and buds on plants such as grapes in area vineyards aren’t way out there yet, so we shouldn’t see anywhere near the damage we had last year when a succession of overnight freezes severely damaged them.

After some frost and a chilly start, Wednesday is going to be one of the best days we’ve had in several. Though Tuesday was sunny, a northerly wind made it feel pretty cold at times. Today the winds begin dying out and temps will warm nicely over the next three days with sunny skies each day. Tuesday night was the last time we should have to worry about any widespread freezing temps in the near future, though tonight is still cold enough to have some patchy frost. Rain enters the forecast again by the weekend.

Monday started off pretty nasty, but ended very nice, though cool. Early morning clouds, along with some drizzle and even snow flurries in the higher elevations finally broke up and gave way to sunshine warming highs briefly to the upper 50’s in some valley locations.

Last night was cold and some frost occurred across portions of Nelson and Central Virginia. Temps started dropping like a rock last night once the winds settled down. Some areas just to our south like Amherst were under freeze warnings due to the cold temps.

Today will still be a cool day, but feel much better since we’ll have plentiful sunshine. Tonight will be one more cold night before things begin feeling more like Spring instead of Winter. By week’s end we’ll be around 80° once again.!

Before I completely get off of the topic of the guys over at a.m. Fog, I want to share a reader comment with you about Ken and Yvonne:

Ken and Yvonne are even better that you have promised in your comments.

Yesterday, Ken delivered my Spring Gardening supplies (in the form of Great
Looking Soil, Pine mulch & wood chips) and he did it on time and at a very
reasonable delivery charge. He and an associate off-loaded the materials and I
am “almost” ready for spring. Thanks for your continuing comments about those
two people and their facility — they are super!

Chuck & Jane Strauss, Faber

We agree Chuck and Jane, they are great guys over there!

Wow! What a change Sunday was from Saturday! We were roughly 25-30 degrees cooler for afternoon highs yesterday vs Saturday where many locations made it into very pleasant lower 80’s. And last night we really cooled down. Some areas mainly above 2000 feet saw some very light and isolated snow showers overnight and into the morning as colder air worked in.

Speaking of altitude, I noticed Sunday that most of the trees are budding from roughly 1800-2000 feet and below, but only the earliest of the varieties are budding at the higher elevations. Those of us that have seen it in years past can notice the green slowly making its was up the mountains…then reverse in the fall.

Faithful NCL web and magazine reader Henri Weems sent the weather photo above. This time of year all kinds of beautiful plants are starting to bloom.

Henri tells us:

This is one of the earliest-blooming wildflowers, spring beauty (Claytonia virginica), which is native to moist woodlands, sunny stream banks, and thickets in eastern North America. Spring beauty usually grows about six inches tall and has half-inch flowers that open up on warm sunny days and close during cloudy weather or at night.
In early spring the star-shaped, pink-tinged white flowers appear and last for about a month.

Not even going to try to pronounce that one, but what a beauty Henri!

Monday will be a cool day as we struggle to get the clouds out of here. I can’t rule out a stray snow or rain shower across the area, but that is the exception, not the rule. Partly sunny skies should win out for part of the day.

By Tuesday and beyond improvement starts rapidly. We quickly warm back up to around 70° by Wednesday and warming even more as the week progresses.

Regional Current Surface Map via wunderground

Looking 12-24 Hours Ahead

Your Nelson County Life custom area forecast including: Rodes Farm, Lake Nelson, Hickory Creek, and Montebello

Monday: Mostly cloudy early with very isolated light snow or rain showers especially near the BRP, then partly sunny.
* Highs Valley: 52-55°

*Winds: N 10-15 MPH
*OVERNIGHT: Mostly cloudy early then partly cloudy. Lows valley: 33-36° : Mountains: 29-32° : Winds: N 5-10 MPH

Tuesday: Mostly sunny & warmer.

*Winds: N 10-15 MPH
*OVERNIGHT: Mostly clear and cold. Lows valley: 31-34° : Mountains: 30-33° : Winds: NW 5-10 MPH.

The extended outlook has warmer temps and sunny skies on Wednesday with afternoon highs near 70° in the valley and lower 60’s mountains. Even better Thursday with highs in the upper 70’s valley and around 70° mountains. Friday looks warm and dry with highs in the mid 70’s as well.
