I never would eat asparagus as a kid but now I love it, and they have plenty of it. Try grilling it sometime with just a touch of olive oil and pepper! Mmm, mm. Then there’s , meat, and fresh baked bread along with a so many other vegetables I can even list them all.

Thanks to Peter Agelasto of Elk Hill for today’s weather photo. We told you about Lilly the donkey yesterday. She dropped in Memorial Day weekend, complete with a wreath, for a visit during the wedding of Jenny Wooton and Teddy Wheeler. They were married this last Sunday. You just might see anything here!

Also remind you about A Shadow of Honor written by Nelson’s own Peter Coy is playing through Sunday June 1st at the Earl Hamner Theater inside the RVCC in Afton. You can click on the hyperlink in this paragraph to learn more.

The last storm system proved to be much about nothing as it arrived. Though some storms and rain did set up to points south, most locations stayed dry with the exception of a passing shower Wednesday morning before the clouds moved out. Wednesday started cloudy with light showers but ended with sunny skies and temps around 70° in the valley and a cool 62° up at Wintergreen Mountain.

After a very chilly start to the morning, especially in the mountains, today and Friday will be fantastic! Sunny skies and temps warming to the upper 70’s today and around the mid 80’s tomorrow. I am watching the next system headed our way and there is the potential to see some severe weather on Saturday.

The guys at the NWS are keeping an eye on this and mentioned the possibility in their hazardous weather outlook last night:

ASSOCIATION WITH A STRONG COLD FRONT EXPECTED TO MOVE EASTWARD
FROM THE GREAT LAKES. ALTHOUGH EXACT TIMING OF SEVERE WEATHER IS STILL
UNCERTAIN SEVERE WEATHER COULD START EARLY IN THE DAY. EMERGENCY
MANAGERS ARE ADVISED TO MONITOR FUTURE FORECASTS AS THE
POSSIBILITY EXISTS FOR A SIGNIFICANT SEVERE EPISODE.

This stuff is very hard to predict with any accuracy this far out, but some elements do seem to be coming together for this to happen. I think it would be later in the day Saturday for Nelson, earlier north, and I am still not convinced it will make it far enough south right now to affect Nelson. But as we saw earlier this month, severe weather is beginning to kick in as warmer / humid days become more routine.

I’ll keep an eye and update this in the weekend outlook Friday morning.

Nelson County High School student, Jordan Kennedy, recently finished this magnificent 4’X 8′ painting of a firefighter. He is giving the painting to Wintergreen Fire Department for display in one of their stations.

Curtis Sheets, Deputy Executive Director of the Wintergreen Property Owners Association says he’s is very impressed with the work. “This youngster and his artwork is amazing! We are having a protective frame made for this 4’x8′ masterpiece.”

We agree! Curtis also tells us that Jordan is leaving soon for NASCAR mechanic school in Tennessee.

Congrats on a great job Jordan!

Congrats to Wintergreen Fire Department firefighter, Anhold, on his recent completion of 4 months of fire training. He’d no sooner finished when he was called into action on the recent car fire above.

WPOA Deputy Executive Director, Curtis Sheets, sent these photos to us and also adds:

“Another of our volunteers, Billy Tellez, of Beech Grove, recently graduated from the Albemarle County Fire Academy where he was given the “110% Award” for being “on-time, on-task, and on-target, all the time.” We are very proud of these guys!”

As are we Chief Sheets, all of the guys & gals at Wintergreen Fire and Rescue do an outstanding job! Kudos!

A quick reminder that A Shadow of Honor written by Nelson’s own Peter Coy is playing through Sunday June 1st at the Earl Hamner Theater inside the RVCC in Afton. Up above or by clicking the hyperlink you can find out more. We’ve also placed a special audio link above where you can hear my interview with Peter about the presentation. It is a very interesting play, chocked full of Nelson history. Folks they sold out the first night, but they tell us they will have plenty of tickets for the remaining performances, but don’t take any chances, they go fast!

Tuesday was still a warm day in spite of lots of clouds around. We managed to make it to the low and mid 80’s in the valley and to 70° on the mountains. Overnight Tuesday some thunderstorms moved in across the area. Not everyone got hit, but there were certainly some rumbles of thunder here and there. You can can see any rainfall totals by visiting any of NCL Weathernet stations above or on the upper left hand side of your screen.

Today will be noticeably cooler than yesterday with highs only making it into the upper 60’s to near 70° rather than the mid 80’s from Tuesday. We rebound quickly with upper 70’s and lower 80’s by week’s end. Rain comes back around again by Saturday night.

“I did a lot of research and it turns out he was born in 1858. This guy, William Loving, Judge Loving, was a wild man. He was an alcoholic, he was violent, he got in fights all the time, he yelled at people. And I thought, well, why was he like this?” That’s how Hamner Theater, Co-Artistic Director, Peter Coy, describes the main character in A Shadow of Honor currently on stage at the theater inside The Rockfish Valley Community Center in Afton, Virginia.

The idea for the performance was born out of a request from Larry Smith, the artistic director with Wintergreen Performing Arts. Last year he asked Peter if he could include some theater in their arts festival during the summer. “I just read a story about a murder that took place in Nelson County in 1907 that was a nationally covered event. And the trial, also, that followed. I actually remembered the story, it was a pretty interesting, exciting story and I told him the story and he went, “Oh, that’s great. Let’s do that- can you write that play?” And I said, “Sure, why not,” continues Peter.

Peter said he wasn’t particularly interested in doing a play with lots of courtroom drama, but more the entire story. “Loving was from either from Nelson County or from Amherst. But, he was living in Nelson County, he was a lawyer, he had been a judge, the County judge. He was, at this point, the estate manager of Oak Ridge Plantation.”

The story set in the early 1900’s involves Judge Loving’s daughter and a murder after she said she was sexually assaulted. The person murdered was the sheriff’s son at the time. “Why the story’s so interesting is she comes home and says to her father, I was raped. I was drugged. I was given something to drink and I passed out and I don’t know what happened. So then he goes and guns the guy down. Doesn’t ask questions. Just came out and said, I hear you took the girl on a buggy ride.” BOOM. BOOM. He cut him in half, or he hit him in the head with the two-blasted shotgun!”

As the play unfolds, the twists and turns of the events following are revealed including the outcome of the trial.

At the same time during the play, another parallel story is underway about a person’s father who was in Vietnam and the effect of being there had on him. “So at the beginning of the of the play, in the 1907 story, you find out what happened in the war that caused him to be this kind of wild guy. And so in the end, in the end, at the end of the first act you find out why the kid is so crazy. So you then, so then these things are going back and forth. And then at the end of the story the two stories come together in a way,” adds Peter.

The first performance which began last week, was a complete sellout. Tickets are highly sought after now, but are still available says Nancy Mulrine, the theater’s marketing director. “So far we still have plenty of tickets for the remainder of the run” The play continues until June 1st which will be the last performance.

Since 1987, playwright Coy has written several one-acts, two screenplays, and 25 full-length plays and adaptations. The Hamner staged his adaptation of Earl Hamner’s The Homecoming as its opening production in 2005. His play A House In The Country, won the 2000 Helen Hayes Award for Outstanding New Play produced in Washington, DC, and will be produced as part of the Wintergreen Performing Arts Festival this coming summer.
The cast includes Jonas Collins of Waynesboro as William Ruffin, the character based on Judge Wm Loving. Rebecca Hudnall (Charlottesville) plays his wife Caroline Ruffin and Holly Schumann (Afton) is their daughter Grace, whose actions trigger the killing. Jim Johnston of Nelson County portrays defending attorney Aubrey Strode. Richard Averitt of Nelson County plays Tyler McNeill, the young teacher who grew up facing his Vietnam War veteran father’s trauma. Rose Harper of Nelson County plays his wife Kathy. Hamner Theater Co-Artistic Director Boomie Pedersen directs.

A Shadow of Honor will play Wednesdays – Sundays through June 1. There will be a free Preview Wed, May 21 at 7:30pm. Opening Night performance Friday, May 23 will be followed by a champagne reception with members of the cast and crew. Playwright Peter Coy and director Boomie Pedersen will participate in a talk-back session after the May 30 performance. Tickets are $10, at the door or by reservation at 361-1999. A quick thanks to Steve Crandall of Roseland for sending us the beautiful shot above for today’s weather photo. It’s a wonderful sunrise he caught driving north on 151.

The Memorial Day Holiday has come to an end, and for all but the last hour or two before dark yesterday it was a completely perfect weekend. Last last evening very isolated showers popped up along the Blue Ride Parkway and moved east into parts of Nelson. Overall, everyone stayed dry, but a few stations on the mountain and just east of the BRP picked up anywhere from a trace to .04″.

Today we’ll see some scattered showers, maybe a clap of thunder early, with a lull, then more development of significant thunderstorms in the afternoon in advance of an approaching cold front. To our west and north that front has been responsible for deadly tornadoes over the Memorial weekend. At least right now it doesn’t appear the front will have that kind of kick to it here. Though isolated severe weather is possible, an organized system is not likely at this point. But, with any sunshine we might get between storms Tuesday, that would help destabilize things and increase the chances for a severe storm or two. This time of year as we head from cooler drier air to more humid conditions, the chances for unannounced afternoon thunderstorms is always a possibility, even when they aren’t forecast.

After the rain moves out sometime Wednesday morning, the remainder of the week looks nice and mostly sunny with daytime highs cooler Wednesday & Thursday, but quickly rebounding to the 80’s by Friday. A chance for scattered thunderstorms returns by Sunday.

A line of showers and thunderstorms will continue east…into the Interstate 81 corridor of the Shenandoah Valley through the early evening hours. Scattered thunderstorms along this line…from near Staunton to Winchester…with more isolated thunderstorms developing across north central Maryland…will have brief heavy rainfall…gusty winds…small hail and cloud to ground lightning. Montebello Trail Ride

As we’ve been showing you on the site all weekend, the weather has cooperated and lots of folks have been able to get out and enjoy it, big time! Paulette Albright of Montebello, sent us the picture above from one of my favorite places in the county, Montebello! They held their annual trail ride this past weekend which benefits the Montebello Fire and Rescue.

Paulette tells us:

The weather was perfect for this type of activity. There were 125 riders and a good time was had by all. Dance and cake walk on Saturday night capped it off. Many of them left with great memories and a homemade cake.

This is also the last year Paulette served as the coordinator for the event. She’s been doing it a long time! Congrats on a great job Paulette!
