Today’s weather and is brought to you exclusively by:
am fog 4.16.08-A

Don’t you just love it when you see folks doing something good…No I mean really good. moving some place, taking a leap of faith, and doing in their heart what they know’s right. That’s Ken and Yvonne Harris. They’ve made Afton and the Rockfish Valley their home. Heck, they’re already raising the next generation of Harris’ now. Farming and farming right is the way they do things.

At a.m. Fog on the Nelson-Albemarle County Line along Route 151 in Afton. They’re as close to the farm as you can get with plenty of fresh meats and vegetables.

They tell me right now they have veggie start, 6 kinds of lettuce. spinach, kale, brocoli, cabbage. And soon they’ll have 26 types of heirloom tomatoes, sweet peppers, and a big selection of HOT HOT HOT HOT, did I say HOT, YIKES! peppers!

They’ve already got; asparagus, lettuce, cucumbers, STRAWBERRIES, strawberry onions (the best!!!), roasting potatoes, Idaho potatoes, carrots, green peppers, farm eggs, meat, and fresh baked bread.

And yea, they still have my favorite the trusty:
-Local “Happy Steer” Hormone and Antibiotic Free Meat
-Local Hormone & Antibiotic Free Chicken

Not to mention all of the other vegetables, annual, and perennial plants along with fruit trees ready for the spring planting! It’s time!

That new beautiful farm market is OPEN FOR BUSINESS NOW, and before long stop in for hot teas, coffee, muffins, and bread while you take a look around.

Did you see that strange yellow ball up in the sky late in the day Tuesday? Yep, the sun made an appearance as we thought it would once that stubborn low pressure area started to move away from here. Most of Tuesday was cloudy and dreary, but as the picture above shows, blue sky started appearing late in the afternoon, and temps actually ended the day around 70° for some of the valley NCL Weathernet Stations.

Wednesday will be a much nicer day with warmer temps returning. We will deal with some morning fog in areas that didn’t dry out very well yesterday, but that won’t last very long and by noon everyone should be in the sunshine business and pleasant temperatures. From here on it gets better for the remainder of the week. But just in time for the weekend we do have some rain back in the forecast. This system looks a little less organized than the ones we’ve had over the past two weekends. The better rain chances for now look to be Saturday night, Sunday on into Monday.

Next show scheduled for the Hamner Theater Cabaret on Saturday, April 26, is Austin, Texas-based singer/songwriter & guitarist Danny Schmidt.

Today’s cut is Sunny Days from his 2003 CD Make the Right Time.

Danny Schmidt is an award-winning & versatile songwriter, his writing includes “heartbreaking love songs followed by biting philosophical commentary, plain-strummed ballads followed by virtuoso fingerpicking.” (Orchard Distribution). His musical style draws from mountain barroom gospel and English balladry, syncopated Piedmont country blues with a dash of 60’s protest folk.

Austin may claim Danny Schmidt for its own, but his career as a performing & recording artist began in Charlottesville, with his first CD, Live from the Prism Coffeehouse, released in 1999. Schmidt returned to Charlottesville to record his fifth & latest album, Little Grey Sheep, produced by Paul Curreri. Also appearing on Little Grey Sheep are Charlottesville musicians Randall Pharr on bass, Matty Metcalfe on accordion, Jeff Romano on harmonica, Sara Read on fiddle, Spencer Lathrop on drums and vocalist Joia Wood.

The songs included in Little Grey Sheep were written over a span of seven years. Says Schmidt: “Each has a very personal meaning for me, and each came from a very particular episode in my life …whereas the songs I was putting on those other records were more narrative and generalized and abstract.”

Danny Schmidt will perform solo at the Hamner, his heartfelt realism guaranteeing an intense live performance, well-suited to this intimate venue. “It’s honest, bare bones storytelling at it’s best” (Tori Mazur, Music Beyond Radio).

The Hamner Theater is in Nelson County, between Afton & Nellysford. Tickets, by reservation only, are $15, which includes food. Doors open at 6:30pm; Food is served from 6:30pm. Dessert is served during intermission. The first set begins at 7:30 pm. Please call 434-361-1999 for reservations. More information at www.hamnertheater.com.

Thanks to Ann Strober of Nellysford for the very fitting photo today. The low gray clouds have been our friend here in Nelson over the past 2-3 days.

Today won’t be much of an improvement visually, but some important changes are taking place behind the scenes to make Wednesday a dramatic improvement! The stubborn low pressure area that’s been responsible for our damp weather is finally losing it’s grip today, and by tomorrow we’ll see sunshine and warmer weather. I actually think some areas will begin to see some sunshine by later this afternoon, but no real sun until tomorrow.

Unfortunately we are in a pattern lately that has us clouding up and having rain over the weekend into the first part of the workweek. This coming weekend looks similar to the past two with rain moving back in by Saturday.

That is roughly 4-5 miles east of the Afton Mountain exit, but not quite to the Crozet exit, 107. One of the vehicles is leaking diesel fuel, no word on injuries. you can see in the image above that traffic is slowing down as it travels.

Half of the weekend was just perfect! Very warm temperatures and beautiful skies. Temps on Friday and Saturday easily made it into the mid and upper 80’s for afternoon highs.

That made it perfect for the annual Rural Health Outreach Program’s Evening of Art, Music, and Cuisine held at Spruce Creek Gallery this past Friday night. Yours truly was the auctioneer at the live auction. Lots of fun and they raised lots of money for the great work that RHOP does! On Saturday the tents went up for the Nelson Farmers Market that kicks off May 3rd! This year’s will be one of the best so I am told! That’s one of the photos above from Saturday’s tent raising.

By Saturday night showers moved in and stayed with us Sunday and continue today. Some areas not far away have been either under flood watches or warnings within the last day or so. Tornadoes even hit the D.C. suburbs on Sunday, thankfully there weren’t very strong ones. Temps were roughly 15-20 degrees cooler yesterday than the previous several days due to all of the cloud cover. Today won’t be much better as clouds will hang in there with showers continuing.

By Tuesday we will begin to see the system ending, but clouds still hang around with drizzle in the area. The real improvement comes mid-week when partly sunny skies return along with Spring like temps.

Chances for rain return again by the end of the week.

My childhood days were filled with memories of hot summer afternoons on the farm. Now back there it was cotton fields for as far as the eye could see. Down near the Mississippi River the sun would set over a distant barge pushing his way down to New Orleans. But the thing I remember most were those family farms, mom and pop types selling their vegetables along side the road.

Ken and Yvonne Harris at a.m. Fog on the Nelson-Albemarle County Line along Route 151 in Afton capture that kind of feel.

No you won’t see a tug headed down the Missip, but the family farm feel is there alive and well. Right now they have 6 kinds of lettuce. spinach, kale, brocoli, cabbage and veggie start. 26 types of heirloom tomatoes are on the way, plus sweet peppers, and a big selection of HOT peppers!

Just liste to some of what you can get now; asparagus, lettuce, cucumbers, STRAWBERRIES, strawberry onions (the best!!!), roasting potatoes, Idaho potatoes, carrots, green peppers, farm eggs, meat, and fresh baked bread.

And yea, not to worry, some on fellow, they still have my favorite the trusty:
-Local “Happy Steer” Hormone and Antibiotic Free Meat
-Local Hormone & Antibiotic Free Chicken

Not to mention all of the other vegetables, annual, and perennial plants along with fruit trees ready for the spring planting season.

Today’s cut is Willow Tree from her CD 29 Dances.

Louisville, Kentucky native Jan Smith writes songs rooted in vibrant imagery and sincere, stark emotion. The artists whose music she grew up with — Merle Haggard, Nina Simone, and Townes Van Zant among many others – influence her work, as does the traditional bluegrass music of her new home in the mountains of central Virginia.

On April 4, 2006, Landslide Records released “29 Dances,” produced in Nashville by Bil VornDick (Alison Krauss, Ralph Stanley). The record features Johnny Hiland, Byron House (Sam Bush, Nickel Creek), Pat McInerney (Nanci Griffith), Randy Kohrs, David Talbot (the Grascals), Mark Fain (Ricky Skaggs), Robert Bowlin (Bill Monroe), Patty Mitchell, and Smith’s partner, Jeff Vogelgesang.

Evening of Art, Music and Cuisine 2007
Nellysford, Virginia

Now there are two more reasons to attend this year’s Evening of Art, Music and Cuisine at Spruce Creek Gallery. The Honey Dewdrops, formed by Scottsville musicians Laura Wortman and Kagey Parrish, who recently won the “Woebegone Idol Trophy” on Garrison Keillor’s Prairie Home Companion show will entertain us with a guest performance! They describe their Americana-styled music as “images of a forgotten past with contemporary words”.

The Evening of Art, Music and Cuisine features live and silent auctions, in-person demonstrations by artists and refreshments. This year the live auction will also offer “Master Whiskey-Maker’s Class” for up to 10 people, courtesy of Chris Allwood and Eades Distillery.

Proceeds benefit the Rural Health Outreach Program serving Nelson County and surrounding communities. Tickets are available at Spruce Creek Gallery, Blue Ridge Medical Center or at the door starting at 6:30 pm April 18th.

Spring Blooms In Greenfield
Greenfield / Afton, Virginia

Today’s weather and audiocast is brought to you exclusively by:
am fog 4.16.08-A

Have you seen that beautiful farm market? It’s OPEN FOR BUSINESS NOW, and before long stop in for hot teas, coffee, muffins, and bread while you take a look around, that could take while, there’s lots to see!

After a very chilly start, some stations in the mid 20’s, and areas of frost, Wednesday became a spectacular day with not a single cloud. Check out the blue skies above the blooming redbud tree in Greenfield. Afternoon temps made it to near 70° for most valley locations and the mid 60’s on the mountains. If you liked yesterday the next couple should be perfect! An area of high pressure continues to control our weather for the next 48 hours or so. That means more brilliant blue skies and very pleasant temperatures.

By the weekend rain is in the forecast, but I do think most of Saturday will be nice and the rain should hold off until the evening hours. Even then, it will be scattered. More widespread rain holds off until Saturday night into Sunday.

jan smith 29 dances
Today’s cut is James River from her CD 29 Dances.
