Monday was another very hot day with about everyone in the valley just a few degrees off of the 100° mark. We were at 99° again and with the exception of NCL-TWNF on the mountain everyone was easily in the upper 90’s. Even on the mountain they were a very warm 87°.

Today will be our last hot day for the foreseeable future with mid 90’s and chances for organized thunderstorms. There is the chance some of these storms could become strong to severe as the day wears on particularly into the late afternoon and evening hours.

Once the cold front swings through the area, conditions quickly improve on Wednesday with sunny skies, milder temps, and much less humidity by the end of the day. The remainder of the week looks mostly dry and comfortable with temps in the mid 80’s. There is a chance for showers again by the weekend on Sunday.

Lovingston Opry is proud to present Blue Skye on Saturday, June 14 at 7:00 p.m.

Beginning in 2001, this eclectic group began playing venues in Central Virginia, their first being a benefit for the firefighters’ families of September 11th. Original members include Mark Campbell, on lead guitar and vocals, Theresa “Tee” Latchford, on rhythm guitar, bass and vocals, Scott Heath on bass and vocals, and Sharen Dowdy on keyboard and vocals. Brandon “aka Pedro” Grishaw joined the group in 2007 on drums.

Originally considered “unplugged,” the group developed a more electric sound in 2005, and recently added a wide range of dance covers to their original playlist, including music from Tom Petty, Tracy Chapman, Jefferson Airplane and Hal Ketchum, among others. You can check out their sound at: www.blueskyeband.com.

If you were able to get to a pond, creek, or lake this past weekend you were probably in it! Thanks to our Paul Purpura for today’s weather photo of the folks at Lake Monacan cooling down over the weekend. That was definitely the place to be! Lots of folks from the Class of 2008 at Nelson County High celebrated there over the weekend. Congrats to all of the graduates and good luck!

We did have a cool down Sunday, well sort of, it was a much milder 99° here at NCL-Nelson County Life Magazine in the Rockfish Valley, as opposed to the 100° reading we had on Saturday! Ok, not really cooler, but sounds it!

Look for the heatwave to continue for a couple more days, though the high temps will begin moderating a little on Tuesday, then noticeably better on Wednesday when highs should only be in the 80’s with more organized thunderstorms back in the forecast for a day or so.

The remainder of the week after Wednesday and right on into the weekend looks nice with more seasonal temps. We should all be able to give the air conditioners a rest, not the day off, but a rest for sure!

This has been the hottest weather of the year so far. On Saturday at 2:46 PM we reached the 100° mark here at NCL-Nelson County Life Magazine in the Rockfish Valley. The mountains were even hovering near 90° for part of the afternoon.

I would not be surprised if some locations again crack the century mark Sunday.

It’s going to be humid too, so the heat index will easily make it into the low 100’s for the next few days.

Though there’s always a tiny chance for an afternoon thunderstorm when it gets this hot, the chances are very slim over the next several days and will be the exception rather than the rule as high pressure control the weather.

Milder weather and a break in the heat arrive mid-week with a chance for more organized thunderstorms Wednesday afternoon.

We told you last year about Deborah Justice and Jenny Sioux Hopkins and their Nelson County LoveChild shirts. The hot weather got both of them in the mood to crank out the new ones for 2008. “We have people ask us about them all of the time,” says Deborah. The pair came up with the LoveChild concept last year, which has been in high demand ever since.

In a backyard just off Route 6, they began working on the shirts this past week. Each of them is dyed by hand and prepared for the Love Child design.

Stockton-1V
Bill Stockton in his new store from our story earlier this year.

NCL first told you in early March, about Mr. Russell Randolph selling the long time landmark, Randolph’s Grocery, just outside of Schuyler in Eastern Nelson County. Mr. Bill Stockton bought the old store as part of his retirement and return to Virginia. He and his family previously lived in Los Angeles. We featured him last month in our May 2008 issue, page 18.

I was dropping magazines the other day in that part of the county and stopped in just like always, to delivery to Mr. Stockton. I was saddened to find he wasn’t there. The store was strangely quiet. I was met at the door by his son who told me the news. Just a few months after settling into his happy country retirement, Mr. Stockton had a massive stroke about a week ago which has, for the time being, left him unable to operate the store. Thankfully, his fine family is pitching in while he recovers.

stockton-2H
Mr. Stockton waits on a customer back in April of this year,

I like Mr. Stockton, just like I always have Mr. Randolph since I met him. Mr. Randolph had some days of ill health along the way when he owned the store, but the folks living nearby helped him through the rough times until he recovered to once again operate the store. We know folks will do the same for Mr. Stockton and his family as well.

We wish you the best in your recovery Mr. Stockton!

For the second time, lightning struck and caused a second house fire on Devil’s Knob at Wintergreen. “Well, a good title would be Lighting Does Strike Twice,” says Wintergreen Fire Chief, Curtis Sheets. He tells NCL for the second time in a month lightning struck a house on Devil’s Knob. “The fire was actually discovered by officer Jeff Harris, who was patrolling on the next ridge over. He saw a column of black smoke and had the fire department dispatched for smoke in the area.”

The view from the outside of the damage.

Chief Sheets tell us they found a multistory dwelling with one side fully involved, and flames through the roof when they got there. “We had 13 firefighters on the scene, with an additional four coming in from Rockfish, Faber, and Wilson. The fire was under control in a little under an hour, ” he continues.

Chief Sheets also said crews remained on the scene for salvage operations for approximately 2 additional hours. The owners live in MD and weren’t on property for the event. “One of our firefighters experienced a sudden onset of chest pain while working the fire and had to be transported via WRS to AMC. He remains in the hospital in good condition.”

Ann Strober keeps knocking it out of the park this week with those weather shots! Another mean looking storm cloud she got in Nellysford! Thanks again Ann!

The past day or so has been chocked full of lightning and thunder. Early yesterday morning, then again around dark last night we had rounds of thunderstorms with some of them reaching severe limits. Twice over the past couple of days we ended up under tornado watches as well.

Today we’ll still have the chance for some strong to severe thunderstorms, but the trend will be for less of them. We’ll still have the scattered afternoon and evening variety, but less of the organized ones.

The big story for the next few days will be the very, very hot temperatures. We will be reaching the mid 90’s easily a couple of times in the extended outlook.

Look at that fantastic shot Ann Strober got in Nellysford of the storm clouds right at sunset recently. We’ve been getting lots of great shots over the past several days due to the occasional thunderstorms moving through the area.

Overnight we got some pretty heavy thunderstorms across the area. A heavy round of severe thunderstorms hit the area just before daylight with severe thunderstorms warnings issued for Nelson and nearby counties. A tornado watch was issued for much of the morning hours as the storms worked through. A flash flood watch was also issued due to the heavy rainfall across Central Virginia.

Today will be another day of thunderstorms with mostly cloudy skies. We will see some sun from time to time, but the rule will be more clouds than sun, with thunderstorms. Stronger to severe storms are again possible later in the afternoon. Storms continue through Thursday night, with sunny skies by Friday and very hot temps.

The weekend looks hot with temps in the 90’s with partly sunny skies.
