Nelson Nonprofit Community Conversation

Calling all Nelson Nonprofits!

The committee of the Nelson County Community Fund and the Center for Nonprofit Excellence invite all nonprofit organizations to attend a community conversation and roundtable workshop.

Please join us to learn more about the resources both the Nelson County Community Fund and the Center for Nonprofit Excellence have to offer the local nonprofit community, and how to access these resources.

In this challenging economic climate, it is more important than ever that local nonprofits know each other, leverage available resources, and identify creative strategies and partnerships to pursue their respective missions. We hope you will be a part of this effort and share your missions, goals, objectives and needs. To this end you are encouraged to bring information and set up display materials to share with others who attend. There will be time after the organized roundtable to network with each other.

Nelson County, Virginia

It’s been a chilly week for the most part, but that didn’t stop students at Rockfish River Elementary School (RRES) in Afton from working on their butterfly garden that will attract the colorful insects in just a few days as the temperatures warm. “About fifteen kids from five to ten years old have been swinging hoes and shovels and rakes to prepare an old abandoned square of playground into a butterfly garden. They have managed to get the ground ready and a border of plants put in and some seeds sown. They carried bags and backpacks full of stones to put around in the shape of a butterfly, colored them bright colors, and put native green stone down the center for her body. They planted milkweed seeds inside the wings to keep the lifecycle of Monarch’s going,” says Olivia Ellis of Wintergreen Nature Foundation’s (TWNF)Propagation Project at Trillium House.

“50 native plants and several packets of native plant seeds were donated to RRES through a grant from The Chrysler Foundation,” Liz Salas of Wintergreen Nature Foundation, tells Nelson County Life.

The garden will be totally completed in the next few weeks just in time for the summer break.

Wintergreen Mountain
Nelson County, Virginia

The calendar says Spring, but mother nature says, not so fast! Out Paul Purpura grabbed these shots early Wednesday morning of a light snow that blanketed the mountain at Wintergreen Resort Thanks Paul! This is neat!

The snow that fell was barely measurable, but still pretty!

Though certainly not unheard of, April snows are rare and become more rare as we near mid-April.

Some roof tops in the valley had snow on them as well, but the bulk of snow fell on the mountain.

With abundant sunshine, most of the snow will melt away today. Warmer temperatures are on the way later this week with a chance for thunderstorms by Friday afternoon. Check it all out over in Tommy’s Weather by clicking here or on the audio player up above.

In the past few weeks Nelson’s microbreweries have been noticed in an international magazine called Food & Beverage Business. Writer, Geoff Burpee from Canada was in Nelson late last year researching the story appearing in the March issue. “They have offices in Milan and Rome, they also have operations in New York, London, Paris, Madrid and Frankfurt,” says Geoff.

The story’s layout and photography center mainly around Nelson’s newest brewery, Devils Backbone, but also devotes a half page of the nice color spread to Blue Mountain Brewery in Afton. Nelson’s first microbrewery that opened back in late 2007.

You can download the entire magazine article in pdf format by clicking here. The file is approximately 2.5 MB in size.

A complete list of the 2009 results are available at www.fliwc.com. The FLIWC is one of the most unique wine competitions in the world. It donates 100% of the proceeds to one charity, Camp Good Days and Special times (info below.) “We are all very excited to be recognized on the world stage for not just our winery, but also for Nelson County and the entire Virginia Wine Industry,” Jeff tells us. He and his wife Tamara own Wintergreen Winery in the Beech Grove Community on Route 664.

Congrats on the win Jeff & Tam. I have had that double gold winner, and it is yummy!

Camp Good Days and Special Times, Inc. is a non-profit organization that provides a camping experience and more for children and adults facing the toughest challenges of life.

Children touched by cancer, HIV/AIDS, and violence gather at our recreational facility on beautiful Keuka Lake (Finger Lakes, central NY) to spark new smiles, re-kindle friendships and enjoy a week where they can simply be kids.

The weekend camping programs for men and women with cancer become a place where old bonds are strengthened and new ones created.

It is a place where smiles are the norm and hugs mandatory, a place where visions are born and dreams discovered, a place where courage knows no boundaries.

It is Camp Good Days and Special Times.
