Beech Grove / Roseland
Nelson County, Virginia
If you are an Ntelos Wireless customer in the Beech Grove area, you have probably noticed a tremendous signal improvement with the past day or so. That’s because of the latest activation by nTelos of their tower that was constructed this past summer. After the final installation and testing of data lines to the site, it was activated late in the week.

You’ll be hard pressed to find much fall color in the highest of elevations in Nelson County, say above 3000 feet. Many trees there are already bare. In the lower mountains and the valley some nice color still remains, but not for much longer. See them while you can, and thanks Ann for sending us the beautiful pics!
Though some trees in the valley are bare, some color still remains. The evening sunset brings what fall colors remain to life in the lower mountains of Nelson County just south of Nellysford.

Afton

The circus recently came to town, sort of. Rodes United Methodist Church in Afton brought Reverend Jim Lavender and his Thank God For Kids tour to the stadium at the Rockfish Valley Volunteer Fire Department. “”It’s a very big deal. He’s been all over and the world with animals. He was a ringmaster Barnum Bailey Circus before he went in the ministry. He uses these animals as part of his worship service on Sunday mornings, says Richard McDowell, the pastor at Rodes UMC.
Reverend Lavender moves a kangaroo in place as part of his Thank God For Kids tour that recently stopped in Afton.
Reverend Lavender uses the animals to teach children about Christianity and goodness toward others. All of the animals are rescues that have found a permanent home with Discovery UMC in Richmond. “He brings some of his animals and gives a presentation with a christian message to it,” Reverend McDowell continues.
The stands were packed with kids and adults during the Thank God For Kids stop a couple of Saturdays ago in Afton.

Often on Friday nights you can find my sister (Hayley) waiting tables, my dad and I playing music, and my mom and brother having a glass of wine.” Definitely a family that “plays” together,” Lindsey says.
The special event will be celebrating Nelson County farms and vineyards.
The menu:

(paired with Flying Fox Viognier — $7 a glass)
Davis Creek Chicken Pot Pie — $15.00

Both Pete and Lindsey (as well as the rest of their family) are animal lovers and spend a lot of their time with horses.
Lindsey gets ready for this past Saturday's Oak Ridge Fox Hunt Club, opening hunt.
When Pete isn’t working as a TV account executive, he loves riding, especially foxhunting. Lindsey operates the Rodes Farm Stables and has been a vet assistant for large and small animals. Dogs, horses, ponies and cats abound in the Osborne family.
Oak Ridge Estate / Arrington
Nelson County, Virginia
Each fall the rolling hills at Oak Ridge Estate come alive with an annual tradition. This past weekend (November 7, 2010) The Oak Ridge Fox Hunt Club held their opening hunt. A tradition that spans decades and decades here in Central Virginia.
Club members leave the Oak Ridge mansion to begin Sunday's hunt.
According to the ORFHC website:
“The Oak Ridge Fox Hunt Club was founded in 1887 in Lynchburg and transferred to the Oak Ridge Estate in 1910. The group was a nationally recognized hunt in Nelson County for three years, although more informal fox hunting occurred throughout Thomas Fortune Ryan’s ownership. Ryan himself was an avid hunter. The Bedford Hunt was established as the institutional successor after World War I. In 1993, Dr. Rita Mae Brown, Master of Fox Hounds, re-instituted the Fox Hunt at Oak Ridge.”

The hunt is more about tradition than actual hunting. The ORFHC site continues:
“We respect the traditions of this greatest of sports without being haughty. The Oak Ridge members are warm, delightful people and if they have a motto surely it is: A stranger is a friend I haven’t met yet.”

Ed Funke, co-owner over at MountainSide Petting Farm in Afton emailed us this weekend to let us know someone stole their 10 foot vertical banner flag that says OPEN. It’s usually placed right at the entrance. “I’d love to get it returned; we order these in from California and they are pretty expensive,” Ed tells us.
If you have any info Ed would appreciate a call or email.
