Blue Mountain Brewery Releases New Afton Amber! Yum!

0
Blue Mountain Brewery is releasing it's Afton Amber Ale on Friday 4.22.11 just in time for Easter Weekend!

Afton
Nelson County, Virginia

The folks over at Blue Mountain Brewery in Afton just keep turning out the new brews. Just in time for Easter Weekend Taylor Smack, co-founder and brewmaster at BMB, has released Afton Amber.

Here’s what Taylor has to say about it:

A classic East-Coast amber ale, with attention to balance and malt complexity. A blend of nine different malts along with rolled oats and wheat malt form the light, bready flavor of this brew and create the amber hue. English and German hops round out the beer but remain pleasantly in the background, and a fermentation with three different ale yeasts—American, Belgian and Scottish—create a blend of flavors that add depth to this simple classic. 20 IBUs, 5.5% alc./vol. Served in a 16oz. pint glass for $4.

Sounds absolutely delicious!

Those Funny Purple Boxes In Nelson County Trees

4
Photo By Paul Purpura : ©2011 www.nelsoncountylife.com : Everyone's been wondering what these bright purple boxes are that have been popping up in trees across Nelson County. NCL Mountain Photographer, Paul Purpura, grabbed this shot on Route 664 Monday afternoon.

Nelson County, Virginia
Traveling around Nelson County over the past few days? You have probably seen those funny purple boxes hanging up in the trees. Some people thought they were kites, others markers for a party, but nope, they are insect traps!

“That is my understanding. But they are also attractive to the state insect, the Tiger Swallowtail as well. Perhaps an alternative design might be less attractive to the butterflies but still allow a means of monitoring the spread of this exotic pest, i.e. the Emerlad Ash Borer,” says Michael Lachance an agent with the VCE-Agriculture and Natural Resources’ Nelson County Unit. The traps aren’t actually to take the insect out, but rather to obtain numbers on how many borers have actually migrated to the area.

Here’s a post on the Purdue University website, that pretty much parallels what we are seeing here.

Thanks Paul for grabbing a shot of one of these.

Photo By Tommy Stafford : ©2011 www.nelsoncountylife.com : On Saturday (4.16.11) the family living in this home at Route 250 & 151 was completed flood out. They need all sorts of items to help get back on their feet.

Afton
Nelson/Albemarle County, VA

Last weekend we showed you how the torrential floods from severe storms forced a family from their home at the intersection of Route 151 & 250. Within minutes water rushing down from Afton Mountain surrounded the house with water going at least 1/3rd of the way up to the roof line.

Water surrounds the Pace Family home this past Saturday (4.16.11) at the intersection of Route 250 & 151.

After word spread on our Facebook page of the family losing much of what was in their home people began began organizing a way to collect items need for the family. Here’s how you can help:

Drop donations at: Afton Service Center – 10921 Rockfish Valley Hwy, Afton, VA. Tel: 540-456-6379 That’s the BP station across from the Rockfish Valley Volunteer Fire Department marked Pace Family Donations.

-Baby wears 9 to 12 month clothes. Diapers are needed. Beds are needed.

-Girl wears 4 to 5 size in t shirts, 3 or 5s in jeans,

-Man wearing 32-32 jeans. Shoes are needed.

Leave the donations at Afton Service Center. When you drop off donations just tell them you are dropping off for the Pace Family. They will put everything in storage for pickup and delivery to the family.

We’re dropping off some diapers today!

Let’s all help these folks out!

After The Storm – Beautiful Skies

Photos By Paul Purpura : ©2011 www.nelsoncountylie.com : After tremendous flooding this past Saturday (4.16.11) skies were a perfect blue over the Blue Ridge on Sunday as seem from the Rockfish Rover Trail head just south of Nellysford.

Nelson County, Virginia
After a Saturday full of flooding and tornadoes, it was nice to see clear blue skies. NCL Mountain Photographer, Paul Purpura, captured it perfectly Sunday after all of the storms had moved well east into the Atlantic.

Water continued rushing down the Rockfish River from the mountain this past Sunday (4.17.11)
Though major flooding was over by Sunday, many rivers including the Rockfish we very fiull and running rapidly.

The Day After Floods Hit Nelson County

Photo By Tommy Stafford : ©2011 www.nelsoncountylife.com : One day after major flooding hit Nelson County, some roads remain closed due to damage from the heavy rains. This is the west end of Glenthorne Loop behind Spruce Creek Gallery south of Nellysford.

Nelson County, Virginia
One day after 5 to 7 inches of rain poured off of the mountains in Western Nelson County, some roads either remain closed or damaged from intense flooding that hit Saturday afternoon. Nelson County Life followed the story minute by minute in pictures as it unfolded in this original breaking post. Tommy continually updated storm information as severe weather moved through. One family near the intersection of Route 250 & 151 had to be rescued from their house as flood waters quickly rushed in covering the house half way up to the roof line.

Above video from Glenthorne Loop Sunday around noon. Water continues flowing over the road at the bridge over Spruce Creek. Due to some bridge damage the road was closed.

Cars make a slow go along Greenfield Road (635) Sunday morning. Long after the flood water receded, huge chunks of pavement were washed to the side leaving a rough but passable road.

In nearby Waynesboro, a mother and child were swept to their death from raging storm waters after they attempted to cross a flood swollen creek. And in neighboring Stuart’s Draft, a small tornado briefly touched down causing some damage. The flooding and that tornado were all part of a much larger system that caused extensive damage and death across the SE United States on Saturday.

Fortunately the start to the coming week will be much quieter. Though another chance for storms returns to the forecast around mid-week.

Heavy Rains Prompt Flood Rescue, Blocks Roads : Update 1:00 PM (Sunday)

Photo By Tommy Stafford ©2011 www.nelsoncountylife.com : Bystanders, family and friends, pause for a minute after Rockfish FD rescue personnel helped get this child and family out of a flodded home at the intersection of Route 151 and 250 Saturday afternoon.

Intense rains that began Saturday morning ad rescue crews busy in the afternoon as homeowners and motorists are coped with rising flash flood waters. The intersection of Routes 250 and 151 in the Albemarle County side of Afton was the scene of a Rockfish Valley Fire Dept. rescue of a family trapped in their house as it sat surrounded by water. In Greenfield, the river at Rt. 635 temporarily closed the road with cars turning around. Water over roads in nearby Nellysford also reported.

Around 6PM Saturday night Nelson County Sheriff David Brooks reported all of these roads closed. : Nelson Road Closures – Roseland Rd, Ennis Mtn Rd, Chapel Hollow Rd, Crabtree Falls Hwy, Rosemill Rd, Afton Mtn Rd, Glenthorne Loop. As of Sunday morning, many of the roads reopened to traffic, but some have been permanently closed awaiting repairs.

Potential For Severe Weather Increases Saturday Afternoon

The Storm Prediction Center in OK has virtually all of Virginia in the slight or moderate risk area for severe weather Saturday afternoon with parts of SE VA in the high risk area.

Nelson County, Virginia
Dynamics continue to develop for the potential of a severe weather outbreak Saturday afternoon across Central Virginia, including Wintergreen and Nelson County. Though we won’t have the customary daytime heating due to cloud cover, vigorous winds will aid in the development of possible severe thunderstorms and isolated tornadoes during the afternoon and evening. This is not a sure bet by any means, but the potential is there and appears to be increasing as of late Saturday morning when this post was written.

For weather junkies you can read the discussion by clicking here.

It is highly likely that additional watches and warnings will be issued this afternoon, so keep checking here under Nelson Weather Alerts to your right (refresh your browser often) and also on our Twitter Feed and our Facebook Page.

I’ll be updating often and with live audio updates if severe weather conditions develop.
