Nelson County 4th Of July Parade Is On Schedule For 11AM Wednesday

The annual Nelson County 4th of July Parade is on and will take place Wednesday – July 4th at 11AM. Judging of the bike parade begins at 10AM.
According to their site:
The parade is going to continue as scheduled tomorrow. It’s been a difficult few days for our county, but hopefully the parade will lift us up. We hope to see you there!
Lightning Starts Second House Fire In Stoney Creek / Nellysford

For the second time in two days lightning has set another home on fire in Stoney Creek. On Monday lightning caused a fire that completely destroyed another home on Wood Thrush.
Wintergreen Fire along with Rockfish Rescue responded to a house fire at 575 Far Knob Climb around 5PM Tuesday afternoon. According to WFD Chief Curtis Sheets, it was caused by lightning strike, just like the one on Monday. Heavy thunderstorms with vivid lightning were in the area at the time of the call. The county was under a Severe Thunderstorm Warning at the time as well.

Apparent Lightning Strike Burns Down Stoney Creek Home

As if last week’s storm and continuing power outages haven’t been enough, soon to be permanent residents of Stoney Creek lost their home to a lightning strike on Monday. ” Apparently it was a lightning strike from early morning storm. Neighbors said there was a bolt which struck very close,” Wintergreen Fire Chief Curtis Sheets tells NCL.
Chief Sheets said around 6 AM a valley service authority employee discovered home fully involved. Wintergreen provided 3 engines, one heavy squad, and one ambulance. Rockfish provided an Engine and Faber provided an Engine and tanker. Over 50,000 gallons of water were used. It took approximately 2 hours to fully extinguish the fire.
There were no injuries. The owners were out of state, however, they were in the process of moving here permanently. Unfortunately all family photos and family heirlooms were in the house,” Chief Sheets continued.

CVEC ended the 4th of July day with 151 outages remaining to be cleared. Crews will be back on it first thing and work to complete the restoration efforts made necessary the wind storms of 2012.

CVEC lost some ground yesterday evening when a line of thunderstorms cause the outage to rise from 1300 to 3800. Crews reduced the number of outages to 1700 and will continue to work on July 4th

Tuesday has been a good day for CVEC linemen and there is plenty time left in the workday. CVEC began the Tuesday morning with a little under 4,000 members without power and had 1300 remaining as of 3:30 PM.
With some luck, CVEC could be under 500 by Tuesday night, a significant drop from the 15,000 CVEC members who awoke to no power on Saturday Morning.
Restoration highlights include:
· The Piney River substation area, in Nelson County, is down to 506 outages out of a total of 1800 meters
· Martins Store substation, in Nelson County, has 462 remaining outages of the total 3973 meters
· The Whitehall substation area, north of Crozet, began the day with 1344 outages and is down to 266
· The Midway substation area, south of Crozet and serving the Batesville area ,has 79 remaining outages.
· The Schuyler substation was re-energized this afternoon when AEP complete repairs of their transmission line, putting 641 CVEC members back into service.
· The Colleen substation, in Nelson County and the Red Hill substation, south of Charlottesville only have 33 and 27 outages, respectively in their service areas.
· Nine CVEC substations have 1-2 outages reported and fourteen substations have no reported outages.If a member receives a phone call indicating service restoration or the member’s neighbors all have power and the member does not, he or she should call 800-367-2832 to re-enter your outage. Crews will address individual outages that remain after service restoration in each area.
CVEC expressed appreciation for the patience of its members and the hard work of the every linemen working long hours under difficult and dangerous conditions. Crews will tackle any remaining outages Wednesday, July 4th.

AEP Update: 8:45 PM, 7/3/2012
Appalachian Power is dealing with significant weather-related outages across its West Virginia and Virginia service areas. STORM WEATHER PERSPECTIVE Friday night’s storm was part of a massive straight line wind storm that traveled close to 700 miles in 10 hours, devastating 10 states and leaving more than 4.3 million customers without electric service throughout the United States. Company and state officials are characterizing the storm as similar to or even greater than a hurricane, but without advance warning. The storm produced winds in excess of 75 miles-per-hour and heavy rain across a large portion of Appalachian Power’s service territory.

Athletes tackle Wintergreen Adventure Challenge
Despite having to cancel the Saturday, June 30 Wintergreen Adventure Challenge because of storm-related power outages, athletes braved multiple elevation ascents and obstacles Sunday. NCL Publisher Yvette Stafford was among several hundred crazy souls who tackled the course, which was reminiscent of October’s Tough Mudder event. Though the WAC was 3 miles shorter, the added slope ascents proved to be very challenging. Proceeds from the event benefited Wintergreen Adaptive Sports, whose volunteers cheered on athletes ad they snaked their way through the rigorous trail.

Free Ice Cream! – Wintergreen Grocers Letting It Go After Power Outage

Though the power is back on in most of Nellysford, the ice cream at Wintergreen Grocers fell a partial victim to the heat and no electricity after Friday night’s powerful storms.
The ice cream partially melted before refreezing after power was restored. It can’t be sold, so they are giving it away to anyone that wants to stop by and pick some up!
Not a bad deal on a hot July day!

As of 5 PM, CVEC has about 4200 members without service. That number will come down as crews work throughout the evening.
Good News: The Whitehall substation has been re-energized and crews will continue working to activate tap lines that are in good condition. 1344 members are served by that substation.
Not Good News: No word yet from AEP on delivering energy to the Schuyler substation. 722 members are affected by that in portions of Nelson, Buckingham, and Appomattox Counties.
CVEC has additional linemen arriving today with more that 50 visiting linemen helping our existing crews. There are a lot of people working to restore service. There are multiple crews in each substations and each crew is working a line segment that has a problem. We don’t know when service will be restored to that line segment until the crew foreman calls the the job in from the remote site and we clear that ticket.
While we cannot tell individual members when their power will be restored, we would estimate that less than 500-1000 people will be without service by the end of the work day tomorrow (depending on whether the Schuyler substation receives power.) Today’s number could drop as well> It all depends on how well things go in the field. All but the very worst pockets should have service by July 4. One example is a street that has 10-12 home and 6 broken poles that need to be replaced.
Twenty five substation areas have less than 100 members without power. Of those, fifteen substation areas have 10 or less members without power.
Five substation areas have more than 100 members without power:
Whitehall – 1171
Piney River – 1141
Schuyler – 722 (no progress due to transmission line failure)
Martins Store – 540
Midway – 396

CVEC crews with the assistance of 50 visiting linemen from sister cooperatives reduced the number of outages to roughly 5200 by late Sunday evening.
Outages remain in all substation areas. In general, the counties of Orange, Louisa, Fluvanna, Goochland, Buckingham, Cumberland and Appomattox have small pockets of outages and individual outages. (A portion of Buckingham served by the Schuyler substation is one exception as well as the Keswick area served by the Zion substation.) We had hoped to have many of those cleared by this morning but more work remains. If you live in one of those counties and do not have power, you can report your outage by using the CVEC automated outage reporting system. Call 800-367-2832. The system will recognize your telephone number if we have it on file or you can use your account number that is printed on your electric bill.
Two substations are without transmission service, meaning that every member served is without power. The Whitehall Substation in Albemarle is waiting on Dominion Power to make repairs and resume delivery of power through their transmission system. 1344 CVEC members are affected. In addition, there was severe damage to the distribution system. Crews are working to make repairs. The Schuyler substation in Nelson County is waiting on AEP to restore transmission service. This substation also serves a portion of Buckingham County, including Yogaville. There is less damage there and many members will have power when the transmission service to the substation is restored. Presently 642 members are without power.
Other Substation areas that have high numbers include:
Piney River substation, which serves up to Long Mountain along Route 60 in Amherst and serves portions of western Nelson County
Martins Store substation with the Nellysford circuit and the Woods Mill circuit requiring additional work.
Midway substation north of Batesville and Red Hill substation south of Charlottesville each have 300-400 members without power
