15 years ago this month Basic Necessities was born. Back then it was little more than a shack. Today it still has its own special feel, but with thousands and thousands of customers over the years always making the stop whenever they are in Nelson. Sunday afternoon with the clap of thunder off in the distance The Basic Crew celebrated 15 years in business with a quaint courtyard party behind the restaurant next door to Wintergreen Hardware.

Dozens of friends filled the backyard of Basic Necessities this past Sunday July 15, 2012 to celebrate the 15th anniversary. Dan Erhman of Afton (left in red shirt) leads off the applause to recognize Bev Lacey (owner-left) Kay Pfaltz (center) and Sarah Leake Shelton (right) for their success and hospitality. Sarah, who is the manager of the restaurant, has been working at Basic since she was a teen over a dozen years ago. Thankfully the storms that blew through Nelson & Wintergreen during the final days of June didn’t damage the Evans Center tent where Wintergreen Performing Arts holds its annual performances. The themed Inovation 2012 season officially got under way this past Friday July 6th and runs until August 5th.

It won’t be anytime soon that people living in Nelson forget about the destructive storm of June 29th. Especially David Parr of Piney River. “Your alert Friday evening may have saved a life or two. I’d laid down on the pillow with my remote in my hand. When I got up for a trip to the fridge, I checked my phone. I saw your (NCL Weather Alert) alert and decided to move my truck into the garage to prevent hail damage and move my daughters Jeep under some tree limbs for protection,” David told us in an email.

David had signed up for NCL Weather Alerts some time ago. About 200 other people have done the same over the years. It sends out an email alert for serious weather affecting Nelson, or pertinent breaking news.

“While outside I heard what sounded like a train in the distance. Within seconds the wind was going crazy and I felt like one of the farm hands in The Wizard of Oz. Our outside dog quickly became an inside dog and we all ran to the basement. When we emerged, two large oak trees were on our house, one was on my shed and two more were right where the truck and Jeep had been parked. Luckiest of all was Henry, the coon dog; his dog house is covered and surrounded by a large oak tree. He would be dead for sure had we not moved him to the basement. From all of us (including Henry, my new truck, and my daughters Jeep), we all say “THANK YOU” for your e-mail updates!!” David continued.

“62 individual outages remain after the morning total shot up for a few hours. There is also one group outage affecting 30 members. Crews are working to resolve these today.” That’s what CVEC’s Facebook status page said remains as of roughly 4PM Thursday afternoon. Last Friday night that number was in the thousands and thousands after a powerful complex of a derecho type thunderstorms moved across the area.
“We are one of the 60 remaining in Nelson without power,” said Heidi Crandall of Roseland on her Facebook page. Though she says partial power was restored to some of the property and crews have been working tirelessly to get everyone back online. “We want to extend our thanks to CVEC and Canoochee Electric for their long hours working to restore power,” Heidi continued.

What is normally covered in snow and skiers in the winter was covered by endless people Wednesday night to get a look at the fireworks. This shot was taken just before total darkness set in prior to the fireworks. The annual fireworks display at Wintergreen is one of the most anticipated events of the hot weather season. The fireworks display has been held every year at Wintergreen for years & years.

In spite of storms that took their toll across Nelson during the past week, and very hot temperatures, the annual 4th of July parade in Lovingston went off as schedule on Independence Day. People lined the streets for the tradition that’s spanned years and years.
