The Appalachian Trail Conservancy (ATC) will celebrate the official designation of Nelson County, Virginia as the newest Appalachian Trail (A.T.) Community™ on October 17, 2012, from 1:30 p.m. – 3:00 p.m., at the Nelson Center located at 8445 Thomas Nelson Hwy, Lovingston, Virginia. This event is free and open to the public.
The designation will begin with guest speakers including Mark Wenger, executive director/CEO of the ATC and Laura Belleville, director of conservation for the ATC, as well as local representatives from Nelson County.
“The Appalachian Trail Conservancy is proud to celebrate communities that are helping to protect and promote the Appalachian Trail,” said Julie Judkins, community program manager for the ATC. “These new partnerships will increase local stewardship of public lands, support community initiatives for sustainable economic development and conservation planning as well as support healthy lifestyles for community citizens.”
After the ceremony, guests are welcome to snack on local apples donated by Drumheller’s Orchard and beverages while they view a slideshow of photographs of the A.T. near Nelson County and of local trail clubs doing trail maintenance.
The ATC will also host “ATopoly”, an activity for all ages to learn more about the A.T. and Leave No Trace principles.
A variety of local outdoor clubs and organizations will have informational booths set up during the event as well.
The Appalachian Trail Community™ is a new program of the ATC, the nonprofit responsible for management and protection of the A.T. Launched in 2010, this program recognizes and thanks communities for their part in promoting the A.T. as an important local and national asset.

The ATC was founded in 1925 by volunteers and federal officials working to build a continuous footpath along the Appalachian Mountains. Stretching from Georgia to Maine, the A.T. is approximately 2,180 miles in length, making it one of the longest, continuously marked footpaths in the world. Volunteers typically donate more than 220,000 hours of their time doing trail-related work each year, and about 2 to 3 million visitors walk a portion of the A.T. each year. This year also marks the 75th anniversary of the completion of the A.T.

Afton

We’ve been telling you about the massive fiber installation undertaking in several previous stories. Today crews were seen along Route 151 in Greenfield pulling the actual fiber into underground conduit that will soon connect a high speed broadband spine together stretching from Colleen in S. Nelson to Afton along Route 151. Though it may be a long wait before residential consumers see the result of that. Large business customers will be connected first, followed by medium and smaller businesses, then residential.
Negotiations are currently underway by Nelson County with service providers that may eventually opt to provide those services.
Faber
Nelson County, VA
Rescue crews from Wintergreen, Rockfish Valley, and Faber responded to a Wednesday afternoon call to help free a man who was caught in a hay baler. “We think his baler slipped some sort of belt, causing it to heat up,” Wintergreen Fire Chief Curtis Sheets told NCL. That set three separate large bales of hay on fire in the field creating large amounts of smoke seen as far away as Woods Mill according to one witness who emailed NCL via Facebook. “It was very hard to get equipment and gear into the scene due to a very small passage for fire engines to get in,” Nelson Emergency Services Director Jaime Miller added.
According to Chief Sheets it’s believed the man attempted to work on the hay baler after discovering a problem. That’s when he became caught in the piece of farm equipment. “It took crews about an hour to free the man. He was never in danger of the burning bales of hay. They were off in the field, but were left to burn temporarily as the man was freed from the baler. Squads couldn’t get enough equipment into the scene to fight the fire and free the man at the same time,” Chief Sheets continued.
After being freed from the baler, crews extinguished the burning bales of hay. The injured man was flown to UVA Medical Center. Injuries are not thought to be life threatening.

Nelson County Featured in New State Tourism Travel Show
-For the LOVE of Travel webisodes showcase wine, outdoor adventure, and culinary travel in Virginia-
The Virginia Tourism office is featuring Nelson County as part of a new, You Tube travel show called For the LOVE of Travel. This four-part video series features short webisodes on wine adventures, oyster travel, outdoor adventure and culinary travel in Virginia as part of the Virginia is for Lovers campaign.
The videos, found on www.YouTube.com/VisitVirginia, are part of a pilot project to showcase Virginia’s travel destinations through video content to travel writers, broadcast media and visitors. Nelson County is one of the first destinations to be showcased.
“Virginia Tourism Corporation is a strong partner with Nelson County Tourism. From the sponsorship of the inaugural Virginia Craft Brewers Festival to their many cooperative marketing campaigns, the leadership and support of this agency brings visitors and revenue to Nelson County,” said Stephen A. Carter, County Administrator.
Nelson County stars in the Rock Star Wine Adventures. The Virginia tourism office will distribute the webisodes and accompanying travel story ideas to national travel outlets starting in October. Nellysford

Updated info from Virginia State Police in Richmond, received at 4:30PM – 9.26.12
Virginia State Police Trooper D.L. Hughes investigated the two-vehicle crash in Nelson County at the intersection of Routes 151 and 612. The crash occurred at 1 p.m.
A 2008 GMC Envoy was stopped on Route 151 in the southbound travel lane, waiting for northbound traffic to clear in order to make a left turn onto Route 612. A 2003 Harley Davidson motorcycle was traveling south on Route 151 when it came upon the stopped traffic. The motorcycle was unable to stop in time and swerved into the northbound lane to avoid striking the stopped southbound vehicles. As the motorcycle continued into the northbound lane, it struck the driver’s side of the Envoy – which, at the time, was in the process of turning left onto Route 612.
The driver of the motorcycle, Douglas K. Reardon, 45, of Dillwyn, Va., was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment of minor injuries. He was wearing a helmet.
The driver of the Envoy, Lilbert D. Critzer, 45, of Nellysford, Va., was not injured in the crash.
Reardon was charged with reckless driving.

Two people were transported to Charlottesville for emergency medical treatment after a serious auto vs motorcycle accident Sunday afternoon at the intersection of Virginia Lane & Route 151 just north of Nellysford. That’s very near the location of Tuckahoe Antique Mall on 151. One of the victims was airlifted to UVA Medical Center. Traffic was slowed as officers and emergency crews worked the scene. The roadway was totally opened after ambulances transported the victims to the hospital and / or to the helicopter landing zone at Rockfish Valley Volunteer Fire Department. No word on the condition or identities of the injured at this time.
Just a few months ago back in July 2012 another motorcycle vs car accident claimed two lives at the intersection of Tanbark and Route 151. The rural two lane highway has developed a reputation of numerous accidents, several fatal, over the past few years. The most serious in recent years claimed the life of a mother and her two daughters in a crash at the intersection of Route 151 and 635 (Greenfield Road) in August 2007. Several other fatal crashes occurred that same year along Route 151. Major improvements, finished three years after the crash, coupled with a lower 45 MPH speed limit put into effect in 2008 appear to have improved things at that particular intersection.
Another Sunday accident on Afton Mountain Road not too far from the intersection of Route 250 also slowed traffic. No injuries were reported in that particular crash and traffic was moving smoothly within an hour or so.

Coming into Friday night’s game at Hargrave Military Academy, there was a sense that the Nelson County football team had yet to put together a complete team effort. While the Governors’offense had shown the ability to be explosive during the team’s 1-2 start, it had also been inconsistent at times, and the defense had struggled in all three outings. So while the 50-18 victory over the Tigers may not have been picture perfect, it was a major step forward for a young team still working at molding its
identity.

Severe thunderstorms created a mess in parts of Nelson County, VA on September 18, 2012. As of this weekend some of the damage remained to be cleaned up. The historical Christ Episcopal Church in the Norwood/Wingina Community had a large tree fall directly on the building. We told you about the historic church back in May of 2011.

A real treat for football players and the coaching staff at Nelson County High School earlier this week. Derius Swinton talked about the importance of teamwork, and discipline, as well as staying away from alcohol and illegal drugs.
Derius Swinton has received numerous awards and honors. Using non-traditional and innovative approaches are what led to Derius’ selection as one of only 13 individuals to represent the United States at the International Educational Fellowship Program in China. Other honors include the Outstanding Leadership Award, sponsored by Reader’s Digest; the Virginia Collaborative Leadership Program Award, and the 2006 Amigo Award, sponsored by New Mexico Diversity Committee and Sandia National Laboratories.

Not a Tough Mudder, but don’t tell that to the ones that had to endure it! This past Saturday – September 15, 2012, the Nelson Lady Govs captured the honor of being first in their division at the Marine Mud Run held in Salem, VA. The cross country team participated in the run that benefited Toys for Tots. It consisted of a respectable 5K course that including a run up the Roanoke River and ending with a muddy splash across a pond roughly 200 feet in length!
