The theater will no longer hold performances at RVCC and are actively looking for a new location within 6 months.

After a long and exciting run of performances, anchored often by The Homecoming, The Hamner Theater will no longer be located at The Rockfish Valley Community Center in Afton. NCL confirmed the rumors Monday morning, that had been swirling for at least the past couple of months.

“Illness this summer and personal crises prevented our development of a fall season. The board determined that a six month hiatus in operations be declared. Of course, the major consideration was facility rental. The RVCC was unable to forego rent during this period, particularly as they had prospective tenants for the space, so we determined it was financially necessary for us to vacate the premises,”

Hamner Theater Board Chariman Terry Sumey told NCL Monday afternoon.

The Hamner Theater was named after Earl Hamner, Jr, a native of Schuyler in Nelson County. Here Earl Hamner autographs a book for George & Mickey McKinney of Nellysford during a 2007 visit to the stage of the theater named after him.

“The Hamner is very much alive. Last night we concluded a winery tour where Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream was performed out of doors in exquisitely beautiful vineyard settings at Mountain Cove, Del Fosse, Cardinal Point, Pollak and Glass House. Another such tour is planned for next spring/summer. We are planning to produce Cyrano, Rostand’s play adapted by our playwright in residence and Hamner founder, Peter Coy,”

Terry continued. In a followup phone conversation he told us that Peter Coy had been out most of the summer with an illness but is now doing very well and looking forward to a 2013 season.

The original cast and crew of The 1st Homecoming performance held at The Hamner Theater back in December 2005.

“For the six month period of hiatus, the board will search for a theater location as well as study several other alternative approaches. The funding of a theater relies on donors to contribute about half of the operational costs with ticket revenue covering the other half. During the past several years of recession, grant money and major donor giving has dwindled. The board will be focusing on developing a reliable stream of income to fill this gap,”

Terry adds.

“After eight years of bringing theater that enlightens, educates, and entertains to Nelson Co, and environs, we have no intention to close.”

A week of sunny delightful weather was capped off with the annual Oktoberfest held this past weekend at Wintergreen Resort in Nelson County, VA. Wintergreen Performing Arts hosts the event each year as summer winds down and fall begins to crank up in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Central Virginia. WPA says, “It’s a celebration of German culture and food – a family event in a beer garden setting. with traditional “oom-pah” band music and taste local microbrewery beers.” We have been covering this annual fun weekend for several years.

RE: Afton man convicted of possessing AK-47 assault rifle while being a convicted felon
FROM: ANTHONY MARTIN, COMMONWEALTH’S ATTORNEY

Donovan Lacy Smith, 34 years old, of 2621 Greenfield Rd in Afton was convicted this morning in the Nelson County Circuit Court of possessing a firearm after being convicted of a violent felony.
Nelson County deputies responded to shots fired in the early morning hours of April 15, 2012 near a residence on Rockfish Valley Highway. Deputies spotted a van sitting in the parking lot of the Rockfish Presbyterian Church around 2:00 a.m. When deputies drove up to investigate, Smith got out of the van with blood on his hands.
Deputies noticed an empty rifle magazine lying on the ground next to the van. After receiving information that Smith was involved in the shooting that evening and after learning that he had been previously convicted of unlawful wounding in Waynesboro in 2002, deputies arrested him for possessing the firearm after being a convicted felon. A search of the van revealed an AK-47 assault rifle in the van’s floorboard.
Smith admitted to shooting the rifle earlier that morning following a dispute at the Thai-Mex restaurant in Nellysford. There were no injuries as a result of the shooting.
Smith faces 5 years in prison when he is sentenced at 9:00 a.m., November 15th in Nelson Circuit Court.

Start Spreading The News! Blue Mountain Beer is officially in New York as of this week! “We’re the first Virginia brewery to have beer in NY and are very proud as we think it shines a huge spotlight on the scene in Nelson County,” Mandi Smack, co-owner of Blue Mountain Brewery tells us.

BMB beer is in about 300 accounts in NY, mainly in Manhattan & Brooklyn, but also some presence in the Hudson Valley.

“People here are making a really big deal about us being the first from VA. It could bring a lot of attention to our area. We’ve been surprised how many people from up here come down our way,” Mandi continued.

Updates and improvements continue at the Rockfish Valley Community Center in Afton. We’ve been telling you about some of the projects in these posts.

Within the past couple of weeks, Karen Cooke of Core Fitness Synergy transitioned from her old room into her newly renovated workout space at RVCC. “The original classroom #10 has been modified into an exercise room. With the help of Bob Yoder, Rob Cooke, Henri and Elaine Weems, some blackboards were carefully removed and placed into storage. Karen Cooke then donated mirrors to this space, painted the trims and walls, purchased and hung new curtains to create a light and bright fitness center,” Henri Weems told us. Henri and his wife have long been volunteers at RVCC.

"The original maple floor was then refinished to produce a beautiful natural wood sheen across the room. This is truly a remarkable transformation," Henri continued.

The latest renovation is just one of many ongoing at RVCC to update the old Rockfish School into a modern day community center.

Pharsalia Contemplates Turning 200 In 2014!

In a little over a year, Pharsalia will turn 200 years old. Last week Dick & Foxie Morgan invited a few folks, including NCL, over to discuss how the rememberance and celebration could best be planned.

“Rich in history, Pharsalia was originally built in 1814, by Thomas Massie and was given to his son, William, as a wedding gift. The property is now in the hands of the fifth-generation Massie family. Many of the plantationís original dependencies remain including the brick kitchen, laundry, slave quarters, and ice and smoke houses. The plantation is set at the foot of DePriest Mountain in one of the most beautiful sections of the county.”

That according to the Nelson County Tourism Bureau.

Foxie stressed the importance of keeping Pharsalia's history alive for future generations.

“It’s important to share the history of this magnificent plantation, yet preserve the grounds,” Foxie told the crowd at last week’s dinner served in front of the main house. Many ideas were tossed around by those attending. Most recently Pharsalia is also remembered for holding two Folk Life Festivals, with the first one back in 2007. Another one is being discussed to coincide with the 200th anniversary.

Pharsalia holds many different workshops throughout the year along with weddings, and other events.

Colleen: Noon Accidents Create Major Delays Along Route 29 South & North Of Lovingston

It’s been a busy Friday for police and rescue personell in Nelson County. An accident on Route 29 southbound in Colleen between the BP and the Exxon brought traffic on that side to a standstill for a lengthy time. An AirCare5 medical helicopter landed at the scene and transported one person. Another was transported by conventional ambulance.

While the accident was underway in Colleen, another accident happened just north of Lovingston near St, Mary’s Catholic Church, also on the southbound side. A person on that accident was partially thrown from the car. A medical Pegasus helicopter transported the person from this accident after landing at the Nelson Wayside on Route 29.

We have no exact details on these accidents as of mid-afternoon Friday.

More as we know.

As of 2:15 PM traffic was flowing normally along Route 29 according to several people traveling that highway.

What’s left of Hurricane Isaac has been hanging around our neck of the woods for days now. While Thursday brings an end to the tropical moisture over our area, Wednesday was a different story. Heavy, tropical, pounding rains caused some flooding in Greenfield just north of Nellysford. Here at NCL our own weather station showed 2.65″ of rain. Most of that fell within a 30-45 minute period.

Just a mile east along Greenfield Road, Idlebrink Farm’s gauge showed a whopping 4.03 inches of rain in under an hour.

Though Thursday still has a chance for an isolated thunderstorm in the afternoon, we should see plenty of sunshine, and much hotter temps. By the weekend rain is back in the forecast followed by pre-fall like temps!
