Wintergreen Performing Arts Hosts Special Concert This Weekend in Rockfish Valley

The 2012-13 season will actually consist of two seasons. WPA’s Board of Directors recently adopted a new strategic plan that will guide the organization for the next three- five years, and one of the many initiatives it contains is the creation of a Valley Season (October through March) and a Mountain Season (April through September). The Valley Season will consist primarily of monthly concerts (The new Wintergreen Performing Arts Concert Series) in valley locations, including Rockfish Presbyterian Church and some of Nelson County’s wineries. The Mountain Season will primarily take place . . . you guessed it . . . on the mountain! This new way of structuring our year will help to facilitate the expanded programming that is a key component of the plan.
Inaugurating the Valley Season . . .

In order to say thank you to the Wintergreen Community, as well as our many friends and supporters in Central Virginia, we would like to invite you to a free concert on Friday, October 12th at 7:30 pm in Rockfish Presbyterian Church (Nellysford, Virginia). We will be presenting the Langley Winds, a woodwind sextet that is part of the United States Air Force Heritage of America Band. The doors will open at 7:00 pm, and seating will be on a first come, first served basis. We will not be taking reservations for this event.

Langley Winds features the diverse talents of six professional musicians whose commitment to excellence has earned worldwide acclaim and military distinction. Langley Winds presents polished and passionate performances of the woodwind ensemble literature as well as transcriptions and patriotic favorites.
Activated in 1941, The United States Air Force Heritage of America Band has a rich history of inspiring public patriotism and enhancing esprit de corps among all the US military service branches. These world-class musicians come from Joint Base Langley-Eustis in Hampton, Virginia. They travel more than 30,000 miles each year, performing concerts for the public and providing music for military protocol events throughout the Mid-Atlantic region. Under the leadership of Lieutenant Colonel Jeffrey B. Warner, the USAF Heritage of America Band remains at the forefront of preserving and enriching America’s military and musical heritage into the 21st century.

The new Wintergreen Performing Arts Concert Series will continue with outstanding concerts in November, December (A Blue Ridge Christmas: The Virginia Consort will be presented on December 9th at 4:00 pm), January, February and March. Individual tickets to these concerts will be available for $30 per person beginning October 20th, but from October 5th-19th, patrons will be able to purchase tickets to all five of the remaining concerts at a reduced subscription rate of $125. That is a savings of $5 per concert or $25 for the five concerts. Beginning October 5th, you can purchase your subscription online at www.wintergreenperformingarts.org or by phoning (434) 325-8292. RVCC Names Stu Mills As Executive Director

The Rockfish Valley Community Center’s Board of Directors has announced the appointment of G. Stuart Mills to the newly-created position of Executive Director, effective October 1, 2012. A long-time resident of Nelson County, Mills was the co-owner of Bistro 151 in the Valley Green Center in Nellysford for seven years. Since selling that business in early 2003, he served as the Executive Director of the non-profit Northwestern Virginia Health Systems Agency, Inc. in Charlottesville, and more recently, the principal of Mills Health Care Consulting in Roseland.

In addition to sharing Center management duties with Operations Manager Sara Taylor, Mills will focus his efforts largely on the long-term growth and sustainability of RVCC, with the goal of developing the financial resources needed for building improvements and program expansion.
“I’m excited and honored to have been selected by the Board to lead RVCC in the fulfillment of its mission,” Mills said upon his appointment at the September 18th meeting of the Board of Directors. “I’m very anxious to work with the Board in refining and sequencing our short and long-term goals, and to get busy developing the resources we need to meet them.”

“Stu’s success at leading a non-profit organization, his strong local business experience and his familiarity with Nelson County makes him an ideal choice for the role of Executive Director,” said Board President Gifford Childs. “With Stu and Sara leading RVCC, our community center is well positioned for a successful future.”

In spite of a soggy and chilly Sunday, most of Festy 2012 went off under beautiful skies and mild temperatures. “We had several thousand here Friday night, it made for a spectacular evening,” said Justin Billcheck of Cerberus Productions, the company that coordinates the annual festival on the grounds at Devils Backbone Brewing. As many packed in again on Saturday.

It somehow seemed fitting that, after five straight road games to open the season, Nelson County’s first home game of the 2012 season was the Homecoming game against Dogwood District foe Dan River. But while the evening began as a triumphant return to Veteran Memorial Field, it didn’t quite end up that way.

With the home stands packed and rocking, the Govs moved crisply down the field on their opening passion, scoring on a beautiful 36 yard pass from Tyler Vest to Coby Etchison. The conversion bounced off the left upright, but 6-0 marked the first time since their opener that the Govs had drawn first blood.

Things appeared to only get better as Nelson completely shut down the Wildcats’ offense on the ensuing possession, forcing a quick punt. As the ball rolled to a stop, however, it hit the Nelson return man in the leg, and Dan River recovered. The Wildcats scored a few plays later to take a 7-6 lead.

The face of the coach says when NCHS played Dan River on 10/05/12.

“That was huge” said Coach Mark Wells. “We had the lead and all the momentum, and all of a sudden they’re right back in it.”

For the 3rd year in a row, The Festy kicked off heading into Columbus Day weekend. An extended weekend for some. Over a thousand campers were already on the ground at Devils Backbone Brewing by Friday morning.

Wintergreen Resort Doubles Snowmaking Production For Upcoming Season

Wintergreen Resort in central Virginia—twice named “Best Ski Resort” by the readers of WashingtonPost.com—is adding to its arsenal of snowmaking guns for the 2012-13 season. This is just part of the largest expansion in snowmaking on the resort’s 26 slopes (129 skiable acres) in more than a decade.

As part of a previously announced plan to invest nearly $12 million in infrastructure improvements, the new high-tech snowmaking equipment will allow opening more ski and snowboard terrain earlier while maintaining more consistent snow conditions throughout the ski season, which can now run even longer.

The extensive improvements include:

Double the snowmaking production
More snowmaking guns on more slopes
More snow on Terrain Park, allowing the area to open earlier
More snow in The Plunge, which will open earlier in the season and stay open longer
More after-hours snowmaking meaning fewer interruptions during daylight
A new, 5,000,000-gallon raw-water storage tank and pumping station
Faster response time when unpredictable weather takes a toll
This is the most significant upgrading of snowmaking equipment and capacity at Wintergreen since the 2001-2003 seasons when the snowmaking process was automated.

The scope of the project includes:

5 million gallons of on-mountain water storage allowing for increased production
3000+ GPM of water cooling, resulting in increased production
16-inch pipeline from the snowmaking plant to key points within the ski area, resulting in much higher water volume and increased water pressure
Additional 4000 GPM of high pressure fully automated water pumping (previous maximum was 4000 GPM), resulting in a total max production output of 8,000 GPM
Additional 3000 GPM of water cooling (cold water increases snow production)
Additional TechnoAlpin fan snow guns
Additional MyNeige tower snow guns
The investment of money, resources, and manpower will enhance every snow sports enthusiast’s experience by producing more snow of better quality across the resort’s terrain.

©™2012 Nelson County Life : The new Virginia Highland Malt Whisky will be rolling out in stores across the east coast in the coming months. It replaces it's former brother Eades. Eventually Highlands will be distilled here in Nelson County, VA just outside of Lovingston.

We’ve been telling you about Nelson’s Virginia Distillery Company (VDC) since 2008. Back then it was Eades branded whiskey that will eventually be distilled and processed right here in Nelson.

“The whisky will be shipping to NYC, DC and Massachusetts in a few weeks. We are scheduled to present it for consideration to the Virginia ABC in early October. If they accept it, it will probably be a few months before it’s available. So please tell your local ABC manager that you want our whisky,” says Pat Jones with VDC.

The new Highland Malt Whisky is described as bright with notes of cinnamon, honeysuckle, raisins and a hint of toffee Palate - Rich mouthfeel opening with layers of acacia honey, prunes, dark chocolate and biscuits with raspberry jam. The finish is graceful with wisps of smoke, cloves and white pepper.

“To make our new whisky, we started with an aged vatted malt whisky from the highlands of Scotland; then we finished it in port-style wine casks from Virginia. We think of it as born in Scotland and Raised in Virginia. The time in the cask gives it a great deal of complexity and a beautiful copper color. Eades Double Malt was truly a small batch and we sold every bottle. We may resurrect it some day as a pairing of our own malt with one from another distillery but not in the near future,” Pat continued.

Pat says while the focus right now is on making the new variety of whisky and its distribution, final financing will soon be in place to complete construction of the Lovingston distillery.

Paul Ryan to Prep for Debate at Wintergreen

Folks living in and near Wintergreen Resort may have noticed a mild increase in security and a few unfamiliar official faces around the resort property. That’s in preparation of the arival of VP Candidate Paul Ryan, who’s expected to get there sometime Tuesday night. NCL in conjunction with CBS-19 were the first to confirm the visit during the afternoon on Tuesday.

The Mitt Romney campaign announced late Tuesday morning that Vice President nominee Paul Ryan will fly into Charlottesville Albemarle Airport on Tuesday evening.

The campaign tells CBS19 that after he arrives, Ryan will get into a vehicle and then travel by motorcade to another location. CBS19 an our media partner Nelson County Life have independently confirmed that Ryan will travel to Wintergreen Resort in Nelson County where he will prepare for next week’s vice presidential debate.

Ryan is scheduled to appear at a rally with Romney on Thursday in Augusta County. It is not clear if Ryan plans to stay in the area until that rally.

A spokeswoman with Albemarle County police tells CBS19 that their department has very little to do with this visit. That would indicate that there likely won’t be road closures Tuesday evening.

As soon as we get more information, we will pass it along.

Members of the Nelson County Garden Club spent their Saturday making a few improvements to the grounds around the Nelson Memorial Library and the Nelson County Tourism office. Lots of new plants, weeding, clearing and mulching took place!

Nelson County Assistant Commonwealth Attorney Jerry Gress of Nellysford shovels mulch as part of a volunteer project this past Saturday - September 29th by the Nelson County Garden Club.
Garden Club members tell us the real treat will come next spring in 2013 when all of their efforts will be in full bloom!

This final weekend of September 2012 marks a very important generational milestone for millions around the globe. It’s the 40th anniversary of The Waltons. A long running CBS television series based on the childhood life of Earl Hamner, Jr who was born and raised in Schuyler in East Nelson County. Nelson resident, friend of Earl Hamner, and frequent NCL contributor, Woody Greenberg, is in Los Angeles where the reunion of the cast and fans is taking place.
