Earlier this week people braved the cold AND rain at Devils Backbone Brewing to help raise money for the purchase of turkeys. The Nelson Pantry uses them to help feed the less fortunate over the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays. As of a few days ago DBBC had raised over $2100 with more donations still pouring in.

Via Virginia State Police – Richmond, VA Media Relations:
Virginia State Police are investigating a single crash that claimed the life of a motorcyclist Saturday, Nov. 10, 2012, at approximately 2:36 p.m. Trooper J.C. Wagner was called to the scene of Route 56 about 1.5 miles east of Route 626 in Nelson County.
A 2011 Suzuki 750CC motorcycle was traveling on Route 56 when the driver ran off the road in a curve, proceeded through a fence and struck a tree.
The motorcycle operator, Brian S. Brooks, 34, of Troy, Va., died at the scene. He was wearing his safety helmet.
Speed is considered a factor in the crash. Alcohol is not involved.

Several days ago we told you about Chris Barksdale’s near death experience out in the Atlantic during hurricane Sandy. He and his shipmates went down with the HMS Bounty. The Bounty was built for the 1962 movie Mutiny on the Bounty with Marlon Brando.
“I knew we were getting in trouble on Sunday (October 28th), late morning, early afternoon. It appeared we were taking on more water than we were pumping out, Chris said from his outside deck in Nellysford Sunday afternoon with CBS-19 Reporter Rachel Ryan and NCL’s Tommy Stafford.

“We were going to try to hold off until daylight came to get in the water with hopes the boat would stay afloat that long so we could get some pumps from the coast guard to help pump water back out. Our first concern was the safety of everyone on board, our second was trying to save the ship.” Chris said the orders were given late Sunday night or very early Monday morning for everyone to put on their immersion suits, sometimes referred to as the gumby suit. The suits help keep crew members from getting hypothermia and drowning while in the ocean.
“Some of the crew had worked up some lines where we were going to do a controlled decent into the life rafts. Unfortunately we didn’t have time for that. The boat heeled all of the way over so the mast were in the water. We pretty much went sliding off the deck into the ocean,” Chris continued.
Around daylight Monday on October 29, 2012 the Coast Guard made it to the location where Chris and his shipmates had been thrown overboard. He went on to say the seas had to be at least 25-30 feet and winds sometimes 80 knots.
From there Chris and his fellow shipmates were eventually rescued and flown about 2.5 hours back to land. Sadly, two of the crew including the ship’s captain, didn’t make. it.
Chris returned back to Nelson permanently this past weekend.

For years people have been entertained, wined, and dined at the annual Rockfish Nights. Years ago the night was called an Elegant Evening of Jazz. The event is one of the larger fundraisers to benefit the Rockfish Valley Community Center.

Indian Summer made for a perfect weekend over at Cardinal Point Vineyard & Winery. They held their annual Oyster Roast on November 10th & 11th. Temperatures hovered around 70° Saturday afternoon and in the mid 70’s on Sunday. That made for a perfect day, considering some years past you had to bundle up!

For several months we’ve been telling you about the impressive list of renovations taking place at the Rockfish Valley Community Center in Afton. Recently the finishing touches were put on another of the old classrooms. “Room 11 at RVCC, formerly known as Class room 11 at RVES, has been renovated. Volunteers have repaired plaster, doors, swing hinges, and woodwork. A fresh coat of paint and a new tile floor makes all the difference in the world. RVCC will now make this room available for rent,” said Henry Weems. Henry, his wife Elaine, and countless others have been volunteering their time to get the rooms in shape.

With the presidential election out front in the news, North Branch Middle School recently held their own election forum. “Students have been researching issues that interest them, including education, health care, energy, the environment, taxes, jobs, foreign policy, and more. They will presented the Republican, Democrat, and one third party’s stand on their topic, in plain language, to help voters make informed choices. The students were at tables with signs so that attendees could learn about the topics that interest them most,” said Bonnie Holliday with NBS.

Four crews of CVEC linemen are joining forces with utilities from around Virginia to assist in the power restoration effort in New Jersey where a reported 1.78 million homes and businesses are still without power as a result of the damage caused by Hurricane Sandy. After rendezvousing in Richmond, 125 linemen from seven electric cooperatives will caravan north where downed trees need to be cleared and damaged power lines restored before normal life can resume.
CVEC was fortunate during this weather event. The distribution system suffered minimal storm damage with 1200 cooperative members affected. Service was restored within 24 hours with the assistance of visiting crews that traveled from Alabama and the Carolinas. Now, CVEC and other Virginia cooperatives are lending a hand to those who took the brunt of the storm.
Gary Wood, CVEC’s CEO commented on the mutual aid effort, “We are proud of the men who are going to help. Their families are also giving greatly to this effort as they agree to go without fathers and husbands for a while. We were fortunate to miss the worst of this storm, and we are glad to help those less fortunate. We also appreciate the extra effort that will be given by those employees left behind to continue normal operations at CVEC while these crews are away helping others.”

We told you about the tents coming down at the Nelson Farmer Market in Nellysford last weekend, marking the end of the market season until spring 2013. That also signals the beginning of the Indoor Community Market at the Rockfish Valley Community Center. It’s sort of a scaled down version of the farmers market, but indoors during the cold winter months.
The next RVCC Indoor Community Market will be held Saturday, December 1 2012 along with live music by Rockfish Gap.

October is gone for another year and November is upon us. Soon the smell of turkey cooking in the oven and sweet potatoes on the table will fill the air. People closed out October 2012 celebrating Halloween in style. In Lovingston the main drag is always a popular spot for adults and children to head out for a spooky experience and to trick or treat.
