For years our founding publication (Nelson County Life Magazine) has been covering the ever popular Lovingston Christmas Parade. It’s a favorite for kids and adults! Blue Ridge Life Mountain Photographer Paul Purpura came down from the higher elevations this past Sunday to capture some of the fun at the 2012 parade.

Not the kind of news you want to hear just before the holidays. Rockfish Valley Community Center just had over 1000 dollars worth of their Christmas Trees stolen. Below is the email blast they sent out.
If anyone has any information on this, please let them or the Nelson County Sheriff’s Office know.
Sad News…
We began our First Saturday full of good cheer and the excitement of the Holiday Market, a great pancake breakfast, and the first day of our Christmas Tree Sales–only to discover that 30 of the Christmas Trees had been stolen.The trees were taken from the tree lot between Thursday afternoon, November 29 and Saturday morning, December 1. We are working with the sheriff’s department in hopes of tracking down the Christmas Tree Thief.
We think it’s likely that whoever stole those trees will be trying to sell them, so we’re asking our community to adopt a “neighborhood watch.” If you have any information that might help us get those trees back, or if you happen to see anyone selling the trees by the side of the road, please let the sheriff know about it. The stolen trees were all 5-6′ Fraser firs, and were spiral-bound with blue twine.
The Christmas Tree Sale provides a significant portion of our fundraising income at this time of year, and those missing trees represent a loss of over $1200.

Roseland

With temps hovering in the mid 60’s at start time, it was a perfect afternoon for the Winter Warmup Fun Run 5 & 10K held this past Saturday on the grounds at Devils Backbone Brewing in Roseland, VA. About 100 runners made it out for the race that winds through the trails with beautiful mountain views near the brewery.
After the race everyone headed over to Devils Backbone Brewing for chili, cornbread, and of course beer! All served around an open fire pit!

Piney River

We’ve been telling you about Dale Plummer and his dream of reopening Campbell’s General Store in Piney River since April of 2012. After tons of setbacks over many months, Dale has opened the doors for business! We were in there Friday night dropping the December issue of NCL. They had a full house of people stopping by on their way in from work.

Wintergreen Resort

Not the real deal just yet, but it won’t be long! Overnight Wednesday Wintergreen Resort in Nelson County fired up their snow gun to test out some major improvements they made to the system in the past few weeks. Looks like they worked from this picture BRL Mountain Photographer Paul Purpura took Thursday morning.
Stay tuned, now all we need is some cold weather to have the perfect mix!
And Tommy says that’s headed our way roughly the second week of December after a brief warmup in early December!
Near Nellysford

As we head into the final weeks of fall before winter officially begins on December 22, the skies across the Blue Ridge continue presenting some of the most breathtaking sunrises and sunsets! Olivia Ellis in Nelson County sent us this beauty. “Taken this past week from my front door at sundown on Hayshed Lane which faces Rodes Valley Drive,” Olivia tells us.

Wintergreen Resort

With colder temperatures making it feel like winter, the annual Grand Illumination took place over Thanksgiving weekend at Wintergreen Resort. The celebration marks the official start of the Christmas season. Our BRL Mountain Photographer Paul Purpura said it was a very large crowd.

Nellysford

A few days ago we told you about a crew from Al Roker Productions shooting a segment with Nellysford’s Chris Barksdale. Chris was one of the survivors from the HMS Bounty that went down in the Atlantic during Hurricane Sandy. Chris has been safely back in Nelson for a couple of weeks now and has slowly been granting interviews to various media outlets.
Ann Strober of Nellysford emailed us Friday morning to let us know she’d seen a promotion on The Weather Channel highlighting the air date. It’s December 5, 2012 at 8PM Eastern.
We checked with Chris as well, he says that’s what the producers of the segment are telling him too.

We first told you about the unique beer dinner dining experience at Blue Mountain Brewery about a year ago in November 2011. It’s where BMB pairs fantastic local food with their variety of hand crafted beers. A few days they held their 2012 dinner. We were able to attend. WOW!
