It’s become a favorite for families over the decades, Massies Mill Ruritan Club Carnival. For decades kids and adults have made it out to the carnival to have some old fashioned fun!The carnival has been going on since June 25th. If you haven’t been, you still have a chance to make it out. The gates open Saturday – June 29, 2013 at 4PM until 10:30 for one more evening.

On Friday June 28, 2013 BRLM received the following information from the Virginia State Police in Richmond regarding the June 26 fatal accident of a Nelson County resident:
Virginia State Police Trooper J.D. Allen is investigating a fatal crash that happened June 26, 2013, in Nelson County. The single-vehicle crash occurred at 10:48 a.m. on Route 634, less than a mile east of Route 151.
A 1992 Chevrolet 1500 pickup truck was traveling along Route 634 when traffic stopped in front of it. The pickup truck swerved to avoid the stopped vehicles and ran off the road. The pickup struck a rock and then the embankment before overturning in the roadway. The driver, John W. Turner Jr., 52, of Faber, Va., was not wearing a seat belt and was thrown from the vehicle. He was transported to UVA Hospital, where he died the next day. The cause of the crash remains under investigation at this time.

“Lowesville, VA – Folks in Nelson County are mourning the death of a 17-year-old who drowned Thursday night.
The medical examiner has identified that teen as Zachary Barbour.
Neighbors near where the drowning occurred didn’t want to go on camera, but they describe Barbour as a kind person, someone who stayed out of trouble.
The Amherst County public safety director says around 10:15 p.m., crews were called to the 200 block of River Jack Lane for a possible drowning.
They pulled the teen out of the water and began CPR, but he could not be saved. He was pronounced dead on the scene.
“A lot of times it takes just a few moments for someone to pass away due to a drowning incident, which is unfortunate,” added Gary Roakes.
Officials say the victim in this case did not know how to swim.
The last drowning in the county was almost exactly a year ago at a pond on Sweet Briar’s campus.
No word yet on funeral arrangements.”

Police release surveillance camera footage from a robbery that occurred at the BB&T Bank in Nelson County.
Detectives say a man wearing a floppy hat and a bandanna covering his face walked into the bank located off Route 151 on Wednesday. The suspect waved a gun at the bank teller and walked out with an undisclosed amount of cash.
FBI agents and Virginia State Police have spent the past two days searching for the suspect, who is described as a black man, standing 6’2 tall.
Detectives say they have collected some evidence at the scene, which is being processed in a crime lab.
Law enforcement officials are hopeful those clues will help identify a suspect.

As of early Wednesday afternoon June 26, 2013 – lawmen continue looking for a black male dressed in a white shirt they say held up BB&T in Afton along Route 151. “The suspect did show a weapon and some money was taken,”Sheriff David Brooks tells BRLM.
As of Wednesday afternoon, the case had been turned over to the FBI, as is customary in bank robbery cases.
This is not the first time this branch has been robbed. Back in 2008 was just one of several at the Afton BB&T.
Sheriff Brooks said the Augusta County Sheriff’s Department is also involved in the search for the suspect as he may have headed to that county.

Bold Rock Hard Cider has begun construction on a new $3 million expansion at its cidery in Nellysford, Virginia, in order to meet dramatic demand for its distinctive hard ciders. In the first year of business, the company has exceeded its original business plan six fold, necessitating additional space for cider making. “The search for a missing inmate was suspended shortly before 7 p.m. Wednesday (June 19, 2013). With the assistance of the US Marshals Service, Karan Batra 44, was located in Washington, D.C., and taken into custody without incident at approximately 6:45 p.m. Virginia State Police, Augusta County Sheriff’s Office and Virginia Department of Corrections spent the day conducting extensive ground searches and following up on numerous tips of possible sightings.
We will not be commenting as to how Batra was located.
For more information about Batra – to include pending charges, etc. – please contact the VA Department of Corrections, as he will be returned to their custody.”

At approximately 9:35 a.m. this morning, a male offender in the custody of the Virginia Department of Corrections walked away from a work unit at the Shenandoah Valley Regional Airport in Weyers Cave, Virginia. The Virginia DOC has activated emergency response plans to apprehend the offender assigned to Cold Springs Work Center #10. State police and local law enforcement are on the scene. The offender has been identified as Karan Batra, 44 years of age, 5’ 5” and 165 pounds, (photo enclosed). If you see this individual, do not approach but instead call your local police or 911. Safety is our highest priority, and we are working rapidly to apprehend this individual.
