90 years ago today Earl Hamner, Jr came into this world. He was born, at then, a small medical hospital clinic in Schuyler, Virginia.

Person wrote a biography on Hamner several years ago.

I have become friends with Earl Hamner over the past 8 years. I first talked to him back in July 2005 when a theater was opened in his honor here in Nelson. (The Hamner Theater has since transitioned out here in Nelson, but remains on a traveling circuit in Central Virginia. I’ll never forget it. I’d placed a call to his cell phone, left a message, and not long after that he called back. I was having lunch at (the now closed) Anderson’s Grocery in Avon. The voice sounded just like the one we’ve all become accustomed to during the intro to The Walton’s and as it closed.

It’s always easy for me to remember Earl’s birthday, ironically it falls on my and Yvette’s anniversary. Subtract 80 years from his birthdate and you have what we are celebrating this year!

Over the years we became good friends and have stayed in touch often either by email or telephone. Earl has occasionally penned several articles in our magazine over the years as well.

“Received the latest issue of Blue Ridge Life. I was thrilled and gratified to find the story on you know who on Page 30. It was generous of you to include it and I am grateful that you still consider me newsworthy. What a live issue! I wanted to be there and take part in every activity you all wrote about from Mario’s Luncy right down to Rockfish Valley Foundation Kite Festival with the rest of the kids,” Earl told me in a recent email about a story we did on him receiving recognition from the Virginia State Legislature.

This has been a tough week for fans of The Waltons. We told you about the death of Joe Conley who played the character of Ike Godsey on the show. He died on Sunday – July 7, 2013

Earl’s health is amazingly good for a man celebrating 90 years on this earth. He’s still active in writing and has recently published several new books in the past several years. He’s genuine, as real as they come, and as nice of a man that that you could ever meet.

Today Earl lives in the Hollywood Hills of California and maintains an office in nearby Studio City.

Happy Birthday Earl, from all of us back here in Nelson!

I’ll sign off as he so often does to me and Yvette, but he uses California instead.

Earl Hamner, Jr. born and raised in Nelson, created the highly popular long running series on CBS.

Guests recently got a special treat when Tanya Anisimova, formerly of Nelson County, held a special performance at the P. Buckley Moss Museum in Waynesboro. The event was titled An Afternoon with Tanya Anisimova at the P. Buckley Moss Museum.

“Highly educated in her field, Ms. Anisimova holds
graduate degrees from Moscow Conservatory,
Boston University and Yale. She is an active
pedagogue and lecturer, and has presented
numerous lectures and demonstrations on the music
of J. S. Bach and Ludwig van Beethoven at Portal de la
Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (U.N.A.M.) at the
University of Mexico and the Conservatorio De Las Rosas in
Morelia. Ms. Anisimova has taught master-classes in cello,
improvisation, and chamber music at Moscow Conservatory,
Icelandic Academy of Fine Arts, Hartt School of Music, Loyola
University, and Virginia Commonwealth University among others.”

“Arnie” in 1994 at a Summertrios Festival, a program that creates
a supportive atmosphere for amateur musicians, particularly
pianists. Tanya was engaged as a member of the teaching faculty
and Arnie was there as a student. Tanya feels that perhaps at that
point in time their roles were reversed, as she was still earning her
Doctoral Degree at Yale School of Music while Dr. Popkin had his
degree, and as a “real” doctor at that! Tanya was impressed by
Arnie’s natural intuitive musicianship, a characteristic of his gifted
playing. The pair struck a mutual musical understanding, and has since performed numerous concerts together that included
classical music from masters such as Beethoven to some of
Tanya’s original scores.”

We’ve been telling you about Tanya since 2005 when we did our first story on she and her husband, renown artist Alexander Anufriev. The two have lived in the Blue Ridge area since 2001.

Tanya told us her schedule is still very busy. She and her husband make their home now in Amherst, VA. They relax in the Blue Ridge area in between performances and travel.

Many communities held their 4th of July celebrations on that exact date, but the folks in Crozet carried the fun right into the weekend. On Saturday the town held it’s annual Independence Day parade capped off by fireworks that night. Our BRLM intern extraordinaire, Tyler Rich, grabbed some of the pics for us. Tyler has been covering primarily events in the Western Albemarle County area. And doing a fantastic job of it too!

The weather mainly cooperated for the 2013 4th of July fireworks display at Wintergreen Resort, but clouds left from area thunderstorms earlier in the day did make for some interesting photos.

As fireworks rise into the night sky over Wintergreen Resort July 4, 2013, the clouds not too far up created a halo that made for some interesting views.
In spite of the low clouds, many of the fireworks were still very spectacular!
Just before total darkness set in on the mountain, you can see the low hanging clouds along the mountain ridges and over the valley below.
People hang out and kill a little time just before the fireworks begin at Wintergreen Resort on the night of July 4, 2013.
The annual 4th of July fireworks show at Wintergreen has been a long time favorite for people all over Central Virginia.

4th of July festivities continue through the weekend at Wintergreen and surrounding breweries and wineries.

In spite of the recent deluge of rains, it looks like the weather may just cooperate for the annual fireworks display this 4th of July at Wintergreen Resort. The fireworks ar scheduled to go off at 9:30 PM. We confirmed with Betsy Dunkerton at Wintergreen late Wednesday afternoon and she said everything is on track!

Nelson: An Evening With Gabriele Rausse ‘The Father Of Virginia Wines’ At The Mark Addy Inn

For years The Mark Addy Inn has been serving wonderful meals to their B & B guests. On special occasions they have evening meals as well. This past Saturday night was certainly a special occasion. Gabriele Rausse started his Virginia wine experiences decades ago helping Charlottesville’s Barboursville Vineyards get started. Today he’s considered a foremost expert in wines. He started his own label back in the late 1990’s. He was on hand at The Mark Addy to have dinner with guests and highlight his wines.

A little background on him from The Mark Addy menu:

Gabriele Rausse has been dubbed “The Father of the Modern Virginia Wine Industry,” and with good reason: He’s been involved in the startup of numerous wineries, including his own, since he first came to Virginia from his native Valdagno, Italy.
Rausse’s first job in Virginia was to help start Charlottesville’s Barboursville Vineyards, and ever since then he has been known as the go-to guy for aspiring wine makers. He was involved in the establishment of Simeon Vineyards (now called Jefferson Vineyards) in 1981 and, in 1999, Kluge Estate Winery and Vineyard. He was also a consultant on several other startups—including Afton Mountain Vineyard, Blenheim, First Colony, Stone Mountain and White Hall among others. He started his own label, Gabriele Rausse Winery, in 1997, and today is Monticello’s assistant director of gardens and grounds. The Virginia Agribusiness Council recently lauded Rausse for his distinguished service to the Virginia wine industry.
Gabriele Rausse wines bear an unmistakable European stamp. Clean structure, clear fruit flavors, judicious use of oak and realistic pricing catapult his wines to the top echelon in Virginia wines.
One could easily say that the wines reflect the maker, Gabriele Rausse. The charming Italian winemaker is the man to seek for vineyard consulting.
The winery is located in Charlottesville on a seven-acre vineyard. Gabriele buys most of his fruit from the vineyards that he has planted for several growers.
Rausse makes all of the products at his winery with the help of his son, Tim. The winery is open to the public by appointment only, as Gabriele works full time overseeing the garden grounds of Monticello.

Seafood Trio of Spiced Prawns, Buttered Garlic Scallops served with Horseradish Sauce and Crab Cake served on a bed of Mango Salsa
Paired with
Vin Gris de Pinot Noir
100% Pinot Noir, no maceration with the skin. Stainless steel fermentation. This is a white wine that will surprise you with candied floral and apple flavors. Soft and round on the mouth with a bold, crisp finish. This wine is only produced if Gabriele is able to secure ripe Pinot Noir.

Butternut Squash Bisque
Paired with
Virginia Dry Rose
Light strawberry aromas and flavors, a firm crisp texture and a lively crisp finish. Everything you expect from this delicious blend of merlot, cabernet franc and cabernet sauvignon

Heart of palm and artichoke salad with Dijon vinaigrette
Paired with
Nebbiolo
When you put a cluster of Nebbiolo against the sun you will see that its color is the color of a brick. Because this is 100% Nebbiolo done in stainless steel, the brick color is right there but the flavor is delicate, it has a silky character, the tannins are very subtle and it is a lighter hearted style

Chateaux Briand served with cream brandy sauce.
Side dishes of oven roasted butter dill potatoes, zucchini cake and broiled asparagus in olive oil and lemon juice
Paired with
Virginia Pinot Noir
Supple notes of wild red berry and spice on the nose. Refreshing minerality and acidity on the finish.

Chocolate Mousse
Paired with
Cabernet Sauvignon
Attractive and inviting black cherry palette, nicely seasoned with a wisp of spice. Handcrafted without compromise from some of the finest Virginia vineyards. Most likely the only Virginia Cabernet Sauvignon aged in stainless steel
