Wintergreen Resort
Nelson County, Virginia
Skies were threatening all weekend, but the skies cleared and the weather was perfect for the annual 4th of July fireworks display held this past weekend at Wintergreen Resort.
Thousands of people flock to see the fireworks at Wintergreen. Here several hundred begin showing up to view the fireworks that started a few minutes after full darkness on Saturday – July 4th, 2015.
In addition to the annual fireworks at Wintergreen, folks enjoyed arts and crafts over the weekend.
With the muggy weather, something coll and refreshing was a big hit!
Veterans to the annual fireworks show at Wintergreen know to get there early for the best seat!
Lots of neat crafts were on display this past July 4, 2015 at Wintergreen.
Paul made and interesting observation in this photo. Look at how the smoke in the upper right almost appears to be a woman looking back.
Check out more of Paul’s photos from this past weekend at Wintergreen Resort in our gallery above.

Our Blue Ridge LIVE Summer Series Continues!….. We will be posting about Life in the Blue Ridge LIVE all Summer…. …
Discover one of Virginia’s best kept secrets as you canoe, kayak or tube down a 2, 6 or 8 mile stretch of the historic James River. JRSP offers rentals of canoes, kayaks and tubes.
Hike, Mountain Bike, Trail Run or ride your horse on the park’s 15 miles of maintained trails.
JRSP offers Geocaching with several caches within the park. You can even rent a GPS at the Visitor’s Center. Will you find the “Nearly Out of Bounds” or the “Two Dogs” cache?
Family fun also includes a custom-made Kid’s Adventure Center. This outdoor, natural play center is currently under renovation, but is slated to re-open by July 17th. BRL visited the Kid’s Adventure Center last week the center is very creative—guaranteed to get your kids away from the digital world and introduce them to some natural fun. Another educational spot is the Visitor’s Center. Learn about the river and about the wildlife living in the park.
Plus, Blue Ridge Life will also be posting LIVE during the Adventures on the James Games’ second race of 2015. This race is a scavenger hunt with challenges for the runner/walker and the mountain biker. Strategy will play a major role in determining the winners. For the usual 5K and 10K racers, this will be a great challenge with a little twist. Plus, Devils Backbone Brewing Company will be kicking off the weekend on Friday night and also providing some fun for the post-race after party. Rockfish Gap Outfitters, sponsor of the BRLM’s Embrace the Adventure Column, has added prizes to the weekend. We are sure that there will be some surprise swag at the Registration area on Saturday morning.
Check out some of the photos above from our last event a few weeks ago at JRSP!
BRLM recently visited “Ranger Bill” Crawford in the park. Bill filled us in on all the plans for the Adventure on the James weekend. Activities are planned for racers as well as non-racers. The weekend kicks off with a cook-out by the James River. The public is invited to kick off the weekend with us….including a Corn Hole Tournament. Are you ready to join the adventure? “Virginia State Police Trooper P.J.B. Serkes is investigating the two-vehicle crash that occurred at approximately 12:39 p.m. Tuesday (June 30) in Albemarle County. The crash occurred on Interstate 64 near the 104 mile marker.
A tractor-trailer was traveling west on I-64 at a slow speed due to the incline in the highway when it was rear-ended by a second tractor-trailer traveling behind it. The impact of the crash ruptured the second tractor-trailer’s fuel tank causing the second tractor-trailer to catch fire.
The driver of the first tractor trailer, a 22-year-old Pennsylvania man, was not injured in the crash. The tractor-trailer was loaded with men’s body wash/cologne.
The driver of the second tractor-trailer, Ismael Lopez-Gonzalez, 41, of Chester, Va., suffered a minor injury and was transported to Augusta Health for treatment. Lopez-Gonzalez was charged with reckless driving. The tractor-trailer was hauling medical supplies.
The westbound lanes of I-64 are closed as the burned debris is cleaned up and removed…and should remain closed for another hour. Motorists are advised to plan for delays as a detour is in place.
The eastbound lanes are open.

Before June 29, 2012 most people had never heard the word derecho. Since then most have never forgotten it! We sure haven’t! At the time BRLM was located in Greenfield of Nelson County. We’d just returned home from a week vacation on the Chesapeake Bay. We ordered take out from Chen’s in Lovingston, threw the laundry in the hall, “We’ll do that over the weekend.” Ha! Put the kids to bed and it hit! We were without power for only two days, but did have a generator. Others in Nelson and nearby went for over 2 weeks before they got power restored.
Not an event we will soon forget!
This was 3 years ago Monday. How can we ever forget this one! :…

A complete success! In spite of threatening skies the first SK8 Nelson Community Festival went off well with tons of people showing up to help save the beloved skatepark located at RVCC. BRLM was a sponsor of the event along with several other folks across the area.
It was great fun!
Check out the photos in our Facebook album below. A big thank you to Kim Chappell for shooting the photos and posting during the event. Kim was also one of several volunteers that helped organize the entire event.
We don’t have a total just yet of the money raised this past weekend, but initial indications show it was more than enough to cover the 3000 dollar insurance premium to keep the ramp open!
See you on the ramp!
What a great success! Check out these goodies raffled off! A Freestyle Complete Skateboard valued at $130. A Darkstar…

Save Sk8 Nelson….The Community Party of the Summer: What's for Dinner on June 27? BBQ Sandwiches from Devils…
Via Sk8 Nelson
Nelson County’s only skate ramp, located at Rockfish Valley Community Center (RVCC), will be the center of activity for the First Annual “Save SK8 Nelson” party on June 27th, 2015 from 5:00 – 9:00 PM. The event will help to raise the funds needed to keep the double-halfpipe skate park operational, maintained and improved.
Photo courtesy of SK8 Nelson. The ramp has become a very popular attraction for novice and seasoned boarders across the area.
In mid-2014, RVCC’s insurance company handed it a hard choice: either get rid of the skate ramp, or lose its liability insurance. After months of searching, the Center was able to find an insurance provider that would cover the skate park–to the tune of an additional $3000 per year. As anyone who visits RVCC knows, the skate park is perhaps the best-loved and most-used feature of its recreational facilities, and regularly hosts children and adults alike. And, as Nelson County’s only skate park, the management and membership of the Center feel it is worth keeping.
Photo By Tommy Stafford : Back in March of 2009 boarders and volunteers constructed the highly popular ramp. In 2015 the ramp was put in danger of having to close because of high insurance costs.
To the rescue has come the “Save SK8 Nelson” committee, a group of skating aficionados, RVCC members and sponsors who have planned a fundraising party unprecedented in RVCC’s history. Skating demonstrations and contests will dazzle onlookers and challenge competitors alike. Additional activities will include volleyball, corn hole, kids’ soccer and more.
Food and beer that will be sold at the event has been donated by Devils Backbone, and Head Brewer Jason Oliver is brewing a special “Sally Rose Radler” (a mixture of lager and lemon soda) just for the event. Wine that will be offered for sale has been donated by Cardinal Point Winery, and mixed beverages and non-alcoholic drinks have been donated by Trager Brothers Coffee. Additional sponsors include Freestyle, Action for All and Blue Ridge Life magazine.
Sally Rose of ShagWṻf is just one of the bands that will be featured at the fundraiser. Others include, Jaguardini, Orme Storm and John Howard & Friends.
Admission to the event will be $5.00 per car, and live musical entertainment will be provided thanks to the generosity of local favorite bands “Jaguardini,” “ShagWṻf,” “Orme Storm” and John Howard & Friends. For those unable to attend, or who wish to make an additional contribution to “Save SK8 Nelson” an event and donation page can be found on RVCC’s website at rockfishcc.org, under the “Super Saturdays” event listings. Contributions will also be welcomed at the Center’s office, Treasure Chest thrift store or by mail at PO Box 106, Nellysford, VA, 22958. The event is also trending on FaceBook at https://www.facebook.com/SaveSK8Nelson.
