Nelson: Indoor Market Season Begins AT RVCC
Thanks to Barry & Midge Shawley for the photos : The 9th Annual Indoor Market kicked off this past weekend on November 7, 2015 at the Rockfish Valley Community Center. The market runs into April of next year over the winter months when the outdoor markets are closed.

As the cold months start settling in, you know it’s time for the indoor markets to start kicking off! The Nelson Inddor Market at the Rockfish Valley Community Center started this past Saturday and runs until March 5, 2016.

The local Nelson Farmers Market in Nellysford, just down the road, has a couple more Saturdays before it shuts down for the season. The final market there for 2015 is on November 21st. (The two markets are not related)

In addition to locally raised produce (when available) and meats at the indoor winter market, many crafts are available as well.

The markets run 9:00am-noon on the first Saturday of the month and each market coincides with RVCC’s Pancake Breakfast and the Treasure Chest Bag Day.
Each Market also features entertainment by our finest local musicians!

There were a few tense moments Tuesday afternoon when an RV caught fire on Route 664 near the entrance to Wintergreen Resort. Wintergreen Fire & Rescue responded to the blaze and got it under control pretty quickly, but the whole mess snarled traffic going up and down the mountain until the scene was cleared. Wintergreen Fore & Rescue Chief Curtis Sheets said no one was hurt in the incident.

This was not related to any of the core drilling taking place at the same time in that location. Crews were taking samples nearby for the proposed Atlantic Coast Pipeline.

By a span of 195 votes, David W. Hill captured the sheriff’s race in Nelson County on Tuesday evening – November 3rd. His closest competetor, Vasco Wright came in with 1899 votes vs the 2094 Hill received.

Via VA Department of Elections : Lt. Billy Mays, an investigator with the current sheriff's department came in at 378 votes with Mike Thompson coming in with 274 votes.

The current sheriff, David Brooks, is finishing up his second term and announced earlier this year that he would be retiring on December 31, 2015.

In other Nelson elections, the incumbent treasurer, Angi Johnson retained her seat easily winning with over 80% of the vote against her opponent, Betty Phillips.

In another closely watched race, Larry Saunders serving on the Nelson Board of Supervisors in the south district retained his seat. He was being opposed by Trina Murphy. Saunders won 534 to 350.

In spite of the numbers, they must be certified and made official before any of the races are considered final.

Blue Toad Hard Cider announced Monday they would be opening a tasting room in conjunction with Well Hung Vineyard at the home of the original Blue Toad Restaurant / Pub in Afton on Route 151. BTHC announced back in June they’d be buying the the old Wintergreen Winery property in Beech Grove at the foot of Wintergreen Resort.

The location was originally the home of D’Ambolas Italian Restaurant that opened back in 2011.

Years later in 2001, Todd Rath, owner and founder of Blue Toad opened his restaurant and pub in that location.

In August 2014 the Blue Toad pub sold and became The Rockfish 151 Pub. It closed in late October 2015.

Monday, Rath announced he would join forces with Well Hung to open a tasting room at his original pub location.

For years and years kids and parents have looked forward to the annual Trick or Treat tradition held in Lovingston on Halloween night. The 2015 event didn’t disappoint. Hundreds and hundreds of kids roamed the streets of Lovingston checking out the ghosts and goblins!

Then as quickly as Halloween came, it faded away in the early morning hours on Sunday as November officially began and Daylight Saving Time ended.

Hope you fell back!

Regardless, fall back one hour!

We don’t get that perceived extra hour back until Sunday, March 13, 2016.

Despite a cool damp day, organizers with Prayers Not Pipelines took to Route 151 to show how the proposed Atlantic Coast Pipeline would affect the area. Part of the event was stringing a large banner with flags on 151 at Spruce Creek to vividly show where the pipeline would go.

Lt. Billy Mays tells BRL that the missing woman being searched for earlier today has been found Sunday evening. “She’s alive and well, safe and sound,” Lt. Mays says. The missing woman was seen on video in Nellysford earlier Sunday which led officer to believe she was ok. Late that afternoon, she was found.

Lt. Billy Mays with the Nelson County Sheriff’s Department in Lovingston is asking for the public to help in the case of a missing person.

“61 yr old white female by the name Kathryn Louis Dagostino was last seen Thursday around 6 pm in 1900 block area of Berry Hill. That’s near the middle between Adial Road and Nellysford. Possibly on foot and picked up by someone,”  Lt. Mays told BRL on Sunday just before noon.

Lt. Mays confirmed to BRL that dog search teams and their handlers have been searching along Berry Hill Road near Nellysford since early Sunday morning.

Lt. Mays is asking anyone with information or that’s seen Ms. Dagostino to call the sheriff’s department at: 434.263.7050
