RVCC Announces Plans To Build Blue Mountain Pavilion Performance-Event Complex in 2016

Release via RVCC

Rockfish Valley Community Center in Afton has announced the successful completion of its fundraising effort to build an outdoor performance complex for the community, thanks to a partnership with Blue Mountain Brewery.

The stage and connected event shelter, to be known as Blue Mountain Pavilion, will provide a protected outdoor performance venue for events large and small, and will be the capstone of the two-year, wholesale rehabilitation of RVCC’s outdoor recreation facilities and fields. .

RVCC Executive Director Stu Mills, in announcing the 5-year naming rights agreement with Blue Mountain Brewery, said, “We are so grateful to Mandi and Taylor Smack for their extraordinary generosity, which has put our fundraising effort over the top of our goal in just six short months. We will be proud to feature Blue Mountain beers at all of our sponsored events here at The Rock, and to host several Blue Mountain-sponsored events here.”

Beginning this past spring, RVCC introduced six large “Super Saturday” social gatherings/fundraisers in response to the community’s requests for more outdoor events on the RVCC grounds and recreational fields. Each of these events involves entertainment, and currently the Center must showcase performers on a portable stage under a temporary tent.

The new stage venue will provide a larger, more professional, and better-equipped venue, and will hopefully help RVCC draw performers and events from an expanded market. The new stage is designed to provide a handicapped-accessible, elevated, 24’ x 32’ platform with a canopy inclined for sound projection and a secure backstage area for performers and equipment storage.

Blue Mountain Brewery provided the food for RVCC’s Jazz & Blues fundraiser for the Pavilion last summer. Mandi Smack was so impressed with the project that she and her husband Taylor decided to approach RVCC with a naming-rights proposal. “The Community Center is such an important part of Nelson County to us and so many people in the area,” said Mandi Smack. “The event highlighted what a fun, community-minded opportunity this beautiful space provides, and we were excited to offer to become more involved..”

In addition to providing a venue for the Center’s own events, the pavilion complex will serve as a much-needed additional source of potential rental revenue for RVCC. It has been designed to be the cornerstone for large outdoor events such as markets, festivals, weddings, fairs and concerts, which will open a new and exciting era of outdoor attractions for RVCC and our community.

Finally, the 1000 square-foot event pavilion adjacent to the stage will be a welcome, shaded structure for those members of the community who regularly use the RVCC grounds free-of-charge for impromptu social gatherings, picnics, baseball games, soccer matches and the like.

In addition to Blue Mountain Brewery’s gift, RVCC has received funding for the project from The Community Foundation of the Central Blue Ridge, The Schaeneman Foundation, The Bama Works Fund of the Dave Matthews Band, The Charlottesville Area Community Foundation’s “Enriching Communities” program, the Nelson County Community Fund, Virginia Distilling Co. of Lovingston, plus internal fundraising events and other donations.

Groundbreaking on the new structure is slated for early spring 2016, with completion planned by the end of May. All labor involved in the construction of the pavilion will be provided by the Building Goodness Foundation of Charlottesville, with assistance from RVCC’s volunteer corps and local builders/contractors who regularly provide expertise and manpower for the Center’s building and renovation projects.

Thursday 12.17.15: Rainy & Cool : Colder By Weekend : Then Another Warmup

TS WX Center

Central Virginia Blue Ridge

The warm mild temps we’ve been seeing during the daytime across the Blue Ridge will end this weekend. The 70°+ readings we saw last weekend won’t make a repeat this weekend, but may very well reappear by Christmas Eve. That’s not good news for ski resorts across the area. A few days ago they began cranking up the snowmaking gear. Recent temperature inversions in the mountains have halted snow production until the colder temps return. It It looks like some freezing winter weather finally returns by late this week into the final weekend before Christmas week. Wintergreen Resort says they will probably begin making snow again this coming weekend. Unfortunately it does appear we will see well above average temps heading into the days just before Christmas Eve.

I talk more about this in my Thursday weather below. Listen and have a great day!

Since moving to Nelson County back in the early part of 2004 we’ve had the wonderful experience of meeting so many fine people. Many have become good friends for well over a decade. And …sadly in that time we’ve had to say goodbye to some of them as well. Thursday morning, our buddy and former BRL / NCL veterinarian columnist Dr. Stephen (Steve) Lotz left us.

Dr. Steve Lotz with one of his many pet patients back in July of 2005 Wintergreen Animal Hospital that he owned for a number of years.
Dr. Steve Lotz with one of his many pet patients back in July of 2005 at Wintergreen Animal Hospital that he owned for a number of years.
Years later Dr. Steve had a feeling something was going wrong with his health. Long before he was formally diagnosed he thought it was parkinson’s disease. Sadly he was right. But in the short term that didn’t stop him. He still managed to see his patients but performing surgery was out. The shakes, small then, were still too much to take a chance. He would tell us to start calling him “Dr. Parky.” Even when he was facing what would become a debilitating disease, he could find humor. Eventually, he gave up his regular animal practice and would still check on many of his established patients as best he could.

Dr. Lotz about one year ago in December 2014 on our farm in Roseland. He was checking on one of our beagles. One of the smartest vets I've ever known, he was able to figure out that Nick our beagle had eaten a poisonous plant. A day or so later our pup was up and running around like nothing had happened!

One of the smartest vets I’ve ever known, Dr. Steve was able to figure out that, Nick our beagle, had eaten a poisonous plant. A day or so later our pup was up and running around like nothing had happened. Good as ever, even today!

Long after Dr. Steve had to stop practicing vet medicine, he made it a point to stay in touch with his close friends. We met (and still do to this day with others) at what was is laughingly called Book Club. No books are ever read, but we simply have a few drinks and discuss life. Dr. Steve (far right with BRL Publisher Yvette Stafford in his lap) was always open about his struggle against parkinson's. But tried to enjoy life as best he could as the disease progressed.

Dr. Steve actually started the idea of Book Club (he laughs) several years ago. Over time we have moved around to keep it interesting but it all started at Devils Backbone and we return there often to celebrate friendship and living in such a beautiful place. We have become a close group of people. And have already had our share of losses before Steve. It's never easy.

It was my hope that I’d have something poetic to say as I wrote this. I don’t and Dr. Steve would have completely shamed and laughed at me for doing so. So, I won’t. But I will say this man did so much for so many. He saved the lives of countless animals. And he was there with many of us when he had to send them off into puppy or kitty heaven. He did that very thing for us years ago. He came to our house after our beloved beagle Jerky broke his back. We all cried on the back deck of our house as Dr. Steve so lovingly and caringly blasted our companion off into space.

Dr Stephen Lotz passed away Thursday morning – December 3, 2015 at Augusta Medical Center. His son Anthony was by his side as were close friends.
Saying good-bye is never easy.

The memories are wonderful Dr. Steve and you left this world with lots of them and lots to be proud of.

RIP in peace our friend and say hello to all of those pets you helped cross over during your time here on earth. We bet you are getting tons of licks from some dogs and cats happy to see you again!

We’ll pass along any additional information we have as it becomes available.
