Eleven years ago today we started a journey that’s been one of the most exciting and rewarding ones ever. Back on April 1, 2005 Tommy & Yvette Stafford started Nelson County Life Magazine. We’d been in the TV news business for years back in the mid-south. The idea for the magazine was to originally launch in the Arkansas Ozarks on the banks of the White River in Izard County. Yes, Izard. It’s near Mountain View, Arkansas.

Since those early days we have grown from just the two of us to four. Adding Adam the Junior Publisher on the left and Peyton on the right.

We want to thank each of you for trusting us, reading our magazine, and to our advertisers for taking the chance on us way back then when we honestly were pretty darn green. Lots of you have been with us since day one. That means a lot. And it’s very humbling.

While we did expand and change our name over three years ago to take in more of the Virginia Blue Ridge, we are still very much Nelson. We live here, our offices are here, and we are staying here. But at the same time, it’s been exciting meeting our neighbors in nearby counties and telling their stories too.

Thank you again to everyone, and we look forward to 11 more years and beyond!

BRL has confirmed this morning that a search was underway in the vicinity of Humpback Rocks off of the Blue Ridge Parkway. “We were called to assist early this morning, and as I understand it, this was a father and son that were hiking and went missing. A command post was been setup at the visitor’s center,” Wintergreen Fire & Rescue Chief Curtis Sheets told us this morning.

Shortly before BRL’s Yvette Stafford arrived at the scene Monday morning, the hikers had been found safe.

The pair had been missing since late Sunday when BRP Park police and other crews began organizing to start a search.

Nelson County, Native and Waltons TV show creator Earl Hamner, Jr. has died at age 92.

“I am very sorry to be the bearer of sad news. My father, Earl Hamner, passed away today at 12:20 PM Pacific time. Dad died peacefully in his sleep at Cedar Sinai Hospital. He was surrounded by family, and we were playing his favorite music, John Denver’s Rocky Mountain Collection. Dad took his last breath half way through Rocky Mountain High. I am sure many of you know Dad was ill, but his amazing tenacity and fight masked how seriously ill he has been over the last year and a half. He was diagnosed with cancer in June of 2014, and had surgery performed in July on his 91st birthday,” his son Scott wrote on Earl’s Facebook page around 8PM Eastern Time Thursday evening.

More thoughts from Earl’s friend and BRL writer, Woody Greenberg:

“Although I knew it was inevitable, this is a day I never wanted to see. Earl Hamner Jr. is gone. Earl’s journey through life took him from Nelson County’s Schuyler to exotic new places and new experiences, but he never lost touch with his roots – his family and the community in which they were born and raised. He taught me the value of those connections. The surviving members of the cast of “The Waltons” remain to this day connected to Earl – and they always will be. He nurtured them, made them better people. The late Ralph Waite, who played John-Boy’s father on “The Waltons,” said many times that the values the show celebrated, love of family, tolerance of differences, respect for others, true friendship, real kindness, made him a better person. Earl personified those values and they permeate his writing. Not that he didn’t have a sense of humor and a fondness for the bizarre and strange. The humor came up in an interview we did about the connection of the show to his actual life. As the oldest of the Hamner brood, he said, he sometimes felt like a mother duck, followed around by a flock of ducklings. But he loved those ducklings, and you can see that in any episode of “The Waltons.” And as for the strange? Check out the episodes he wrote for “The Twilight Zone” and you’ll see what I mean. Earl’s impact on American popular culture will be the subject of many an article and dissertation, but his impact on those of us who knew and loved him is his real legacy.”

Earl was no stranger to Blue Ridge Life Magazine. “Earl wrote for our charter publication, Nelson County Life Magazine in the early years,” said Blue Ridge LIfe Magazine Publisher, Tommy Stafford.

In September 2014, not long after Earl had surgery in California, our Woody Greenberg (a longtime personal friend of Earl’s) stopped by his home in Studio City to see how he was doing.

In April of that year Earl had returned to his birth town of Schuyler in Nelson County as part of a documentary, Earl Hamner Storyteller, that was being filmed about his life.

Spring arrived early Sunday morning at 12:30 EDT, just in time for the folks at Wintergreen Resort to close out the ski season with their annual Splash & Dash (known as Pond Skimming to the veterans). The event is held each year around this time as a fun way to move into the warmer days ahead. The 2016 event had a record 62 contestants, and yes, some of them made it across!

Near St Mary’s Wilderness Area / Cellar Mountain

We first told you about a mountain wildfire burning in the GW National Forest portion of St. Mary’s Wilderness on Thursday. By Saturday morning the fire had now taken in over 500 acres. Efforts are being made to contain the fire, but as seen in the photo above taken by Carole Painter, smoke was still rising from the area late Friday afternoon.

Snow and rain that moved in over the weekend helped firefighters in controlling the wildfire. The fire that started as roughly 20 acres on Thursday of last week has now taken in over 800 acres.

BRL has learned of a wildfire is underway in the mountains near the St. Mary’s Wilderness area. Many reports put it on the Augusta side, but Carole Painter that sent us the photo above said it looks like “it’s between Lofton and Montebello heading down the Nelson County side.” as well.

BRL has confirmed with the Virginia Department of Forestry in Charlotteville that the fire is not a controlled or prescribed burn and is on US Forestry property.

Wildfire-fighting units and aircraft with the U.S. Forest Service and local firefighters and rescuers went to a forest fire in the Saint Mary’s Wilderness inside the George Washington National Forest.

The fire was called in around 2:30 p.m. on Thursday. The site appeared to be near the up-slope end of the mountainous St. Mary’s Road, perhaps a mile or two north of the Blue Ridge Parkway’s Bald Mountain Overlook [ map ]. The fire area was around four miles west of Sherando Lake Recreation Area and about seven miles west of the Wintergreen Resort.”

The Virginia Society of Landscape Designers (VSLD) elected its 2016 officers and board at our annual meeting which was held at CitySpace in Charlottesville, VA. They are: President – Yulita Ellis of Ellis Landscape & Garden Designs in Gladstone; Vice President – Meg French of Meg French Landscape Design in Virginia Beach; Secretary – Chris Coen of Nature’s Palette in Henrico; Treasurer – Virginia Rockwell of Gentle Gardener Green Design in Montpelier Station; Past President – Tom Thompson of Natural Art Landscaping in Richmond; Director – Denise Hargraves of Denise Hargraves Designs in Somerset; Director – Lesley Sewell of Sewell Horticulture in Crozet; Director – Shelly Arthur of Shelly Arthur Landscape and Garden Design, LLC in Manakin-Sabot and Director – Anna Best of Samara Landscape Design in Ashland.

Founded in 1960, the VSLD promotes the professional competence of its members through statewide certification standards, continuing education, and research. The organization’s goals include the beautification of Virginia’s spaces, the enhancement of the relationship between man, architecture and the environment, and the promotion of professionalism in the application of design.

With the warmer temps arriving thoughts are turning to longer days. Just in time! Daylight Saving Time begins this Sunday – March 13th at 2AM. But for those of us that party until that hour, your best bet is to move your clock ahead one hour before turning in on Saturday night. Then you’re all taken care of until Sunday – November 6th when we go back to standard time.

Until then, enjoy those longer and warmer days to come!
