Augusta & Albemarle County, Virginia

As we first told you back in April, veteran radio talk show host and long time Charlottesville program director, Joe Thomas, announced his plans to acquire and launch the WTON radio network based out of Staunton, Virginia with reach from Harrisonburg to Crozet and beyond.

After going off the air as part of an asset sale in October of last year, WTON radio is re-born this Memorial Day weekend.

“We want to hear YOUR voice,” said Chief Operations Officer and Morning Host Joe Thomas, “we’ll bring you coverage of the LOCAL stories from this wide area we’ll be covering as we develop the BEST local shows alongside an all-star lineup of shows all day!”

Local News, Local Business

“We’re building a newsroom that will tell you what is GOING to be happening, not just what DID happen.” Thomas added. “Local businesses will be able to connect with the local listeners around the clock so they can stand out and stay prosperous!”

From the WV line to IVY

WTON’s legendary 1240am signal has been serving Staunton since 1942 and her new life includes FM signals blasting from the top of Afton Mountain at 101.1 and in downtown Harrisonburg on 98.9fm.. Thomas concluded saying; “as all of us are trying to stretch the dollars we have more radio is uniquely positioned AGAIN to be the vehicle that helps them through.”

VDOT Lifts Lane Closures For Memorial Day Weekend : Unofficial Start To Summer!

VDOT provides traffic and travel information to plan ahead

RICHMOND, Va. — One of the busiest travel times of the year is coming up with the Memorial Day weekend, and the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) wants to make your trip to the beach, mountains or beyond a safe one.

VDOT will be suspending many highway work zones and lifting most lane closures on interstates and other major roads in Virginia from noon on Friday, May 24, until noon on Tuesday, May 28.

While lane closures will be lifted in most locations, motorists may encounter semi-permanent work zones that remain in place during this time. Check VDOT’s Travel Advisories for the latest travel alerts in your area and around the state.

Additionally, VDOT offers several resources to help plan travel ahead of time.

TRAVEL TRENDS MAP HELPS PREDICT CONGESTION

VDOT’s online, interactive travel trends map shows peak congestion periods anticipated on Virginia interstates during the upcoming Memorial Day weekend. While it cannot precisely predict when congestion will occur this year, it can help motorists avoid travel when traffic has historically moved the slowest.

Based on historical data:

  • On Interstate 95 northbound, heavy congestion is expected on Friday and Saturday between Stafford and the D.C. line and on Monday in the Stafford-Fredericksburg area.
  • On Interstate 95 southbound, congestion is expected between the D.C. line and Richmond on Friday and Saturday, and on Sunday and Monday in Northern Virginia.
  • In the Hampton Roads area, congestion is likely, especially on Interstate 64 approaching the Hampton Roads Bridge Tunnel eastbound on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, and going westbound on Friday and Monday.
  • On Interstate 81 northbound, pockets of congestion may appear on Monday between Roanoke and Winchester.

PLAN AHEAD WITH VDOT 511: TRAFFIC INFO AT YOUR FINGERTIPS

VDOT’s free mobile 511 app offers information about construction, traffic, incidents and congestion as well as access to traffic cameras, weather, electric vehicle (EV) charging stations and more. Use 511’s “speak ahead” option for hands-free and eyes-free audible traffic alerts for incidents and construction along your route. Traffic information is also available at 511Virginia.org or by calling 511 from any phone in Virginia.

NORTHERN VIRGINIA EXPRESS LANES SCHEDULE AND OTHER INFORMATION

  • Find directional schedules for the reversible I-95 and I-395 Express Lanes, and information for the I-495 Express Lanes at expresslanes.com.

HAMPTON ROADS HOV SCHEDULE, TUNNELS AND OTHER INFORMATION

  • Travel to Virginia Beach — Peninsula traffic to Virginia Beach is encouraged to use the I-664 Monitor-Merrimac Memorial Bridge-Tunnel (MMMBT) as an alternative to the Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel (HRBT). If traveling to Virginia Beach, take I-664 south to the MMMBT. Then take the Portsmouth/Norfolk exit (exit 15A) to I-264 east to Virginia Beach.
  • Travel to Outer Banks — Traffic to the North Carolina Outer Banks should use I-664 and the MMMBT as an alternative to the HRBT to save time. From I-664 south, take I-64 west (exit 15, Chesapeake/Virginia Beach) to exit 291B (Chesapeake Expressway (Route 168)/Great Bridge/Nags Head). Continue south on Route 168 to the Outer Banks.

STAY SAFE

Here are some additional tips for safely navigating the roadways during the holiday weekend:

  • Buckle up every time and ensure passengers and car seats are secured
  • If you plan to drink, have a designated driver
  • Maintain a safe distance from the vehicle in front of you in case traffic suddenly stops or slows down
  • Be patient and follow the posted speed limit, and consider leaving early to allow extra time to reach your destination
  • Use your signals for lane changes and turns
  • Put your phone down and don’t drive distracted
  • Use caution as more pedestrians and cyclists are outdoors taking advantage of warm weather
  • Obey the “Move Over” law, requiring motorists to move over one lane, if possible, for all vehicles with flashing lights, flares, or warning signs stopped on the side of the road

For questions or to report hazardous road conditions, contact VDOT’s 24-hour Customer Service Center by visiting my.vdot.virginia.gov or calling 800-FOR-ROAD (367-7623).

Lots of activity on Wednesday morning had people wondering what was going on at the eastbound I-64 rest area just inside Albemarle County east of Afton Mountain.

According to Virginia State Police it ended up being a false alarm.

Nellysford : Wintergreen-Stoney Creek : Newborn Reunion

0

Wintergreen/Stoney Creek
Nellysford
Nelson County, Virginia

As Wintergreen Fire & Rescue Chief Curtis Sheets told me this past Monday, “It’s not everyday, or even every year that you deliver a baby in the back of an ambulance.” But, that’s exactly what happened on April 23rd. It was the second time in less than 30 days they’d delivered a baby outside of a hospital setting. Last month one was delivered in the Food Lion parking lot. But this one was on the way to the hospital!

Paramedic Heath Matysek-Snyder (L to R) is joined by EMT Clay Brinker and Lisa Schultz, the newborn girl’s mom, along with Lisa’s mother, Brenda Schultz, and Wintergreen F & R Driver Doug Bramwell- Monday – May 6, 2024

“Heath and Clay did an incredible job under very stressful circumstances. There was an obvious bond that bloomed between Heath and the new Mom. Joy and ecstasy seen in both of their faces. Though I had minimal contact with the mom, I felt an amazing bond with her also. She was so appreciative of the crew and Wintergreen Rescue,” Wintergreen F & R drive Doug Bramwell shared in an email to the staff at Wintergreen Fire & Rescue.

Other Wintergreen crew members that assisted with the delivery / transport but weren’t in the reunion pics, were Austin Arbaugh, Shane Wheeler, Amy Wood and Doug Bryant.

Chief Sheets told us the crew was about 5 minutes out from MJH when the baby was delivered.

“Dozens of staff were waiting for us at Sentara MJH, with family members embracing mom and baby. The whole hospital stopping what they were doing to congratulate the new Mom,” Bramwell continued.

Good Night Marilyn, Rest In Peace My Friend

Nelson County, Virginia

By Tommy Stafford

I met Marilyn Shifflett of Nellysford many years ago. I can’t tell you exactly when, but it’s been over 10 of the 20 years we’ve lived here permanently. I didn’t really get to know Marilyn and become closer to her until the looming threat of the Atlantic Coast Pipeline (ACP) became a very real threat to majestic mountains of Nelson County. You can’t think about the ACP and the opposition to it without thinking of Marilyn Shifflett. She was a tireless crusader against the pipeline, and in the end, in great part to her efforts, Dominion finally gave up and pulled the plug on the ACP.

“She was such an incredible ally in the fight against the ACP, but also just an absolute gem for this county. And she somehow always seemed to approach the hardest fights with a smile and optimism. I loved working with her,” Richard Averitt told me Monday afternoon after learning of Marilyn’s passing. They worked side by side for years to defeat the ACP.

Marilyn didn’t single handly defeat the pipeline. But without her diligent research and opposition, I am not sure Dominion would have packed their bags and left so soon. She should have been a researcher for any news network in the country or any institution. She simply was that good.

Marilyn reminds me of another warrior for Nelson County that left us a few years ago, Kim Cash. Kim, Like Marilyn, was adamant about keeping the heritage and character of Nelson County fundamentally rural. Back in the day Kim was at every BOS meeting, every zoning meeting, and more. She kept meticulous minutes from each meeting and made them available on the then Rural Nelson website. Kim passed away back in 2019 Both Marilyn and Kim were pioneers that predated a lot of us. Kim was responsible for finally getting big trucks banned from Route 56 West (Crabtree Falls Highway) They always got stuck up there near Montebello. Marilyn was just as important in helping get the ACP stopped just a few years back.

Marilyn and I didn’t always agree politically. Far from it. But we both despised government waste and inefficiency. Anyone on the Nelson BOS knew better than to go to war with Marilyn. She always had her homework done long before coming to a meeting. Years later we joined forces in a campaign. When Marilyn committed, she committed. And she wasn’t afraid to speak her mind. Ever.

Which brings me to the sad part of this story. Saying goodbye to Marilyn, forever. She passed away this morning, Monday – May 6, 2024, at her home. I won’t be passing that cute green house of hers just north of Nellysford anymore wondering what Marilyn’s up to these days in retirement. She finished off her work years not terribly long ago at Martin’s over in Waynesboro. She was freed up, finally, to do more of what she wanted with grandkids and such.

Some weeks ago I was taken into confidence by a mutual friend of mine and Marilyn’s. We were at lunch and she confided to me the end was near for Marilyn. She’d enter hospice. An aggressive cancer was attacking her. Through her tears she poured her heart our to me about how sudden this was and how devastated she was that her friend would soon be gone. I was shocked. I always thought Marilyn would be around for years. I’d be able to text or phone and get some info from her about this or that. But like so many I’ve had to write about since moving to Nelson two decades ago, Marilyn is gone.

I cannot overstate how important this woman was in keeping what all of us enjoy here in Nelson pristine. Again, Marilyn wasn’t the only person that stopped the ACP, but without her that chore would have been far more difficult.

There won’t be a funeral service for Marilyn, but the family says there will be a Celebration of Life ceremony in the future.

Thank you Marilyn for making me think more, become a better debater, and friend.

Sleep in peace Marilyn and fly high. You made a difference.
