UPDATE : As of 8:40 PM – 6.6.24 Route 250 is now open for normal traffic.

Rockfish Gap Turnpike / Route 250
West Of Roundabout Headed Up Afton Mountain
Albemarle County, Virginia

If you were considering using Route 250 up Afton Mountain Thursday afternoon that wasn’t a good idea. Both east and westbound lanes were completely shutdown west of the roundabout.

The above video was shot by Willie Rothacker. Willie owns the property near the accident location on Route 250. He tells us, “I appreciate all the fire departments all the police departments sheriffs departments state police local police rescue squads fire marshal everybody responded rapidly the gentleman that was in the tractor trailer was on his way to the hospital in a rapid fashion. Our great fire marshal was here flying a drone inspecting making sure Stockton creek is not contaminated. I can say, when we call they come and they help save lives, property and our forest as well.”

Submitted : Traffic is blocked heading up Afton Mountain on Route 250 at the roundabout Thursday afternoon. June 6, 2024

Traffic was able to take old 6 Afton Mountain Road to 250 and then head up toward the interstate, but no traffic was being allowed off the interstate down exit 99 and onto 250 down the mountain.

Submitted : Crews had a very difficult time getting to the truck fire off of the roadway. Thursday – June 6, 2024

The fire and accident caused an extended closure as it was taking fire crews a long time to get to the fire and get it extinguished.

Severe Weather Hits Several Counties Late Sunday

Near Glasgow
Rockbridge County, Virginia

By Tommy Stafford

Several area counties received storm damage late Sunday afternoon this on the Memorial Day weekend as severe weather moved through

In Glasgow people at a campground near James River Road and Recreation Lane were temporarily trapped as trees fell from the very high winds. “While working on scene, Chief 2 was notified by staff that a second tree had fallen on a cabin with occupants still inside. Units made their way to the cabin and were able to clear the entrance and assist the occupants out.” Glasgow VFD said in a Facebook post.

You can read more and see additional photos in the GVFD post immediately below.

In Nelson County a man was killed after seeking shelter from the storm in his car at the Wingina boat ramp. Winds caused a nearby tree limb to fall onto his car killing him.

At one point the storms caused widespread power outages on the CVEC system as well.

There’s the chance for more severe weather late Monday afternoon and evening as an approaching cold front may trigger storms as it passes through.
