Unlike last year when temperatures were hovering around 5° to ring in New Years 2018, the prelude to the 2019 New Year was mild.
BRLs Paul Purpura was at the annual fireworks event held up at Wintergreen Resort this past Monday night as folks rang in 2019. Paul has been covering that event for us for the past 14 years!

In an update we received around 7:30 AM Friday, we have been told 29 southbound will be closed, cars are being detoured onto Route 6 (River Road) to Route 151. Tractor trailers are lined up on 29 until the road reopens.

…FLOOD WATCH REMAINS IN EFFECT FROM LATE TONIGHT THROUGH LATE
FRIDAY NIGHT…
The Flood Watch continues for
* Portions of central and western Virginia, including the Central
and Northern Virginia Blue Ridge, and the counties of Albemarle,
Greene, Nelson, Madison, Page, Augusta, Highland, and Rockingham.
* From late tonight through late Friday night.
* Periods of moderate to potentially heavy rain will move
through the southern Shenandoah Valley and upslope regions
east of the Blue Ridge and Allegheny Front overnight tonight
through the day on Friday. Total rainfall of 1 to 2 inches is
expected, with much of that falling in a 6-12 hour timeframe.
Localized amounts of 3 or more inches are possible.
* Conditions remain wet after rain that occurred late last week,
so the upcoming rain has the potential to increase stream
levels and cause flooding, especially on small streams in the
watch area.
PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS…
A Flood Watch means there is a potential for flooding based on
current forecasts.
You should monitor later forecasts and be alert for possible
Flood Warnings. Those living in areas prone to flooding should be
prepared to take action should flooding develop.

…Flooding Possible Tonight and Friday…
.A deep low pressure system tracking from the south central U.S.
toward the Great Lakes over the next couple of days will draw
abundant Gulf moisture northward into the eastern United States
ahead of an associated slow moving cold front. Rainfall will
average 1.5 to 3 inches across much of the forecast area.
This rain will be falling on very saturated ground from recent
repeated heavy rainfall events and snow melt from earlier in the
month. The rain will not be absorbed well by the already moist
ground. Runoff from the rainfall will likely result in flooding of
small streams and creeks tonight and Friday.
Main stem river flooding will also likely be renewed Friday and
in some cases, particularly along the lower portion of the Dan and
Roanoke Rivers, will result in minor to potentially moderate
flooding that could continue into early next week.

The Flood Watch continues for
* Portions of North Carolina and Virginia, including the
following areas, in North Carolina, Alleghany NC, Ashe,
Caswell, Rockingham, Stokes, Surry, Watauga, Wilkes, and
Yadkin. In Virginia, Amherst, Appomattox, Bedford, Botetourt,
Buckingham, Campbell, Carroll, Charlotte, Floyd, Franklin,
Grayson, Halifax, Henry, Patrick, Pittsylvania, Roanoke, and
Rockbridge.
* From 7 PM EST this evening through Saturday morning
* 1 to 3 inches of rain, locally 4 inches, is expected along and
east of the Blue Ridge tonight through Friday evening.
* Minor to moderate flooding of small creeks and streams is
possible. This would result in flooding of roads and poor
drainage areas. Minor flooding is also possible along main stem
rivers and tributaries, including the Roanoke, Dan, James,
Yadkin, and Watauga River basins.

You were there when we started, and when started our family here in the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains of Central Virginia.Two years later we added another life to the mix! The northbound lane of U.S. 29 was blocked for about 3 hours early Friday morning after a tractor trailer overturned near Northside Lane. Emergency and towing crews worked to get the roadway back open before daylight.

“The Atlantic Coast Pipeline has sued the Nelson County Board of Supervisors. The lawsuit was filed in the Western District of Virginia’s federal court after the county denied Dominion Energy’s request to build the pipeline across waterways.
A few days later on Dec. 13, a federal appeals court vacated the pipeline’s construction permits to cross two national forests and the Appalachian Trail along the pipeline’s route.
Nelson County Supervisor Ernie Reed said Dominion’s lawsuit has no standing.”
