Hard to believe that it’s been two years since the last Animal House Ball to benefit Almost Home Pet Adoption Center here in Nelson. This was the first time the event was held at the Carriage House on Oak Ridge Estate in Arrington. What a beautiful place and a great event. We’ll have much more on this in the June issue but here’s preview.

NCL-Tiger Fuel joins NCL Weathernet
Our newest NCL-Wunderground Weathernet station came online this week. NCL-Tiger Fuel Lovingston, VA officially joined our network Wednesday May 9, 2007! You can get to them by simply using the handy drop down menu on the upper left hand side of the page you are viewing now.

Tiger TS & EF
Above me and Eddie Fitzgerald of Tiger Fuel Company in Lovingston show off the newly installed station atop their office. Couldn’t have done this with you Eddie – Thanks a million!

Tim Spicer, operations manager of Tiger there in Lovingston stepped up to the plate and allowed us to put our latest station at their place. “This allows us to keep track of what the weather is doing in real time, right here. This along with the other NCL stations across the county helps us determine what heating requirements might be,” says Tim. Now people living in Lovingston or anywhere in the world can get live real time weather from the Nelson County Life & the Tiger Fuel station. I also want to thank Mike Pugh with Tiger Fuel’s IT department in Charlottesville for helping me through the twists and turns of getting the software configured on their system. Thanks Mike!

Above is the completed weather station at Tiger’s Lovingston office.

Again thanks to Tim and everyone at Tiger for allowing us to put our newest station online there. And thank you to all of the folks that have allowed us to put stations in across the entire county. Check them out again on that drop down menu above on the upper left!

Mr. T’s Wed Forecast & Lovingston WX Station update

0

Good Wednesday,

Below the high moves away and loses control over our weather. The Low over the Carolinas moved back toward us a bit and allows clouds to stream in counterclockwise around the low.
Today’s Forecast Map

In the photo below you can see the clouds streaming in from the SE around the low. This was in Nellysford around noon.
Clouds

Today look for partly cloudy skies, a scattered shower, and temps around 80. There won’t be any widespread rain. Tonight we go mostly cloudy and lows in the mid-50’s

I will have more on the extended outlook later today. We are upgrading our satellite IP at the office and I am actually doing this via laptop at Stoney Creek Bar & Grill while having lunch!
NCL-Tiger Fuel – Lovingston is up in test mode now you can click here to see it – it will be online lilve in regular mode later today.

Today’s map

Good Tuesday to everyone.

Before I get started one housekeeping chore. Many of you have asked why the temperature is wrong or you don’t see new content on our site from time to time. Well, it’s there, but you have to make sure you have refreshed your browser. Let’s say you look at the temperature and forecast early this morning and then walked away from the computer until this afternoon. Unless you actually close out the browser or refresh it, you’ll be looking at old data. A simple refresh generally does the trick. We are looking at adding a plug in that will do that automatically that for you in the future.

High pressure over new England is in control of our weather today, but as shown in the map above it eventually weakens and allows a low pressure area to our southeast to get close enough to spread slight chances of isolated thundershowers into the forecast by Wednesday and Wed night. I talked about this weak disturbance yesterday. This is not a huge rain maker and is really nothing more than an annoyance. But these things have a way of spoiling a sunny sky as they are close enough to throw moisture and clouds in, but not strong enough to be a real system. Forecasters at NWS in Sterling say:

LONG TERM /WEDNESDAY THROUGH MONDAY/…
THE MiAIN FACTOR IN THE EXTENDED IS THE LOW OVER THE OCEAN DUE E OF
SAVANNAH EARLY THIS MORNING. THAT LOW WILL MEANDER AROUND AND
WEAKEN…BUT WILL REMAIN BASICALLY THROUGH THE WEEK. WITH THE
COMBINATION OF ONSHORE WINDS AROUND THE LOW AND MOISTURE BANDS THAT
WILL BE THROWN OUTWARD FROM IT…THE CLOUD COVER FORECAST THE NEXT
SEVERAL DAYS WILL BE THE MAIN FORECAST UNCERTAINTY…AS WELL AS THE
ASSOC HIGH TEMP FORECASTS.

Today
will be sunny with highs around 74 to 75 in the valley and around 68-70 on the mountains. We could see some high thin clouds spin up our way from that low to the SE later in the day. Tonight look for clouds to increase with a low of 50 in the valley and 48 on the mountains. By Wednesday the low gains more control of our weather and we become more cloudy than sunny. Showers are possible especially later in the day into Wed night. We’ll still be mild with temps in the low and mid 70’s below and about the same above.

By Thursday clouds linger but not looking for any real rain. Highs even warmer around 78-79 valley and around 70 on the mountains. I do think we’ll see about 50/50 sunshine Thursday. So a nice day still. Friday look for partly cloudy skies and temps in the 80’s.

Unfortunately for the weekend the thundershower chances return for both Sat and Sunday. It will be mild with temps in the 70’s. This will not be a total washout for the weekend and we will see some sunshine.

But remember, what my feelings are on any forecast beyond 24 hours, it’s really just an educated guess. Though the TV forecasters ( I was one of them) would like you to believe they can predict accurately out over 7 days, don’t believe it for a minute. It just “ain’t” so! This past weekend was a prime example.

Finally, today we’ll be in Lovingston this afternoon at Tiger Fuel Company putting up our newest NCL-Tiger Fuel Wunderground Weathernet Station. If we don’t encounter any major problems we’ll be up and reporting later today. Once we have it going and all is well, we’ll add it to the pull down menu on the upper left hand side of the screen. Tim Spicer and his crew will help us install. We appreciate Tiger letting us locate out station there at their place for our Lovingston location!

Everyone have a great Tuesday!

Talk about one tough ride! Saturday morning, every 30 seconds a bike rider took to the 7+ mile course at elevations of more than 2500 feet to compete in this year’s Wintergreen Ascent sponsored by Wintergreen Resort and The Charlottesville Raciing Club. You can get the results at the CRC link shown above as well.

Our very excellent photographer Paul Purpura was out bright and early to catch some of the shots as the riders made their way through the course. Paul you are da’ man!

This is an awesome shot and one heck of a climb up!

We know this guy! It’s our own Martin Versluys of the Acorn Inn B & B. If you know Martin, then you know if there’s anything to do with biking he’s there!

Pre Mother’s Day Plant Sale

Story and photography, Tommy Stafford

The weather is cooperating and it’s a great day to go out to the Rockfish Valley Ruritan Park to buy some plants at the Pre Mother’s Day Plant Sale. A beautiful blue sky with temps in the 60’s makes it a great day to check out all of plants there.

Here folks browse the plants set up at a booth by The Wintergreen Nature Foundation.

You’ve probably seen the historic Page House on Route 151 at Chapel Hollow Road undergoing renovation lately. Saturday the cat was out of the bag. Alain and Francesca San Giorgio along with their daughter, Catalina, (owners of The Meander Inn B & B) held the official open house at their new Four Seasons Realty office.

Francesca talks with Arlo Croxall of Access Home Mortgage, and co-sponsor of the open house, her husband John Croxall, of Wintergreen Resort Premiere Properties and Jerry and Sharon Gress of Stoney Creek.
