Our resident Wintergreen NCL photographer, Paul Purpura, called around 9AM to let us know that much of the mountain at Wintergreen is without power at this time. We do not know the cause or how long it will be out. He said many of the condos just to the north of the Mountain Inn are out as are some of the areas around the lodge. The Mountain Inn has power, though we do not know if that is generator. Apparently Devil’s Knob has power as we checked our NCL-Wintergreen Nature Foundation site and it is reporting normally. More as we know it…..
Rescue Crews help injured hiker on AT near BRP

Above a rescue ambulance from Montebello waits for crews to get the injured hiker out.
Rescue crews worked along the BRP Wednesday afternoon to get an injured hiker on the AT to safety. We have few details, but know they worked in the Three Ridges / Harper’s Creek area. Eventually the hiker was taken near Route 56 for transport. Our photographer Paul Purpura grabbed the shot above.

I think the bulk of the severe weather will be to our north, but as earlier mentioned, the ample sunshine has destablized the atmosphere enough to create the potential for severe weather in some areas.

Have a good afternoon and check back often for severe weather updates.

Earlier post from the morning on 5.16.07
Good Wednesday to everyone,
We’ve had a run of really nice weather over the past several days. High temperatures Tuesday reached the upper 80’s in many NCL-Weathernet locations. Here at NCL-Nelson County Life Magazine in Greenfield, we reached a high of almost 89 degrees around 3:15 PM Tuesday afternoon, to be exact 88.7 degrees, but who’s counting! Down the road at NCL-Wintergreen Winery in Beech Grove they reached an afternoon high of 86.2 around 3:45 PM. Over in Lovingston at NCL-Tiger Fuel they reached an afternoon high of at 84.9 at 4:20 PM. By-the-way the NCL-Wintergreen Nature Foundation Weathernet station should be back online later today when they get their computer glitches cleared up there.
Current-Sat Surface Map
Today’s Forecast Map
Today’s slight risk area for severe weather. (We are just on the western border)
Today we’ll see temps easily warm back into the low 80’s for most areas below. Temps stayed fairly warm even overnight as breezy SW winds kept blowing. Up on the mountains lows stayed in the 60’s overnight due to the warm winds. Today they will see highs around 73 to 74 degrees with windy conditions. Afternoon storms move in as well. We’ll start out with some sun in most areas, but clouds move in as the cold front shown above creeps closer to us firing up thunderstorms. I don’t see any intense dynamics in play right now to create a broad outbreak of severe thunderstorms, but an isolated severe storm is a possibility. Regardless, we will have a windy day as mentioned with gusts up to 30+ MPH from time to time.
Tonight clouds linger with any remaining storms ending by midnight as the system exits to our east heading out to shore. Lows drop to the upper 40’s valley and low 40’s mountains at Wintergreen, Montebello and the BRP. Winds will shift to the NW around 10-15 MPH as the front works it’s way through the area.
By Thursday mostly sunny skies return early with much cooler temps reaching around 70 degrees in Covesville, Arrington, Piney River and areas below. On the mountains a cool almost chilly day with highs in the mid to upper 50’s. Another weak disturbance enters the area Thursday afternoon and night bringing some more clouds in, maybe a shower, but nothing to write home over at all. Friday looks similar to Thursday with cooler temps. Look for some mid 30’s on the mountains by Friday & Saturday morning. Upper 30’s valley.
Right now the weekend & extended forecast and look nice with plenty of sun and temps in the 70’s. We near 80 degrees again by Sunday.
Have a great Wednesday and I will be keeping an eye on the approaching storms. Should any warnings or watches be issued, I will post them here and talk about their impact. So check by from time to time.

Farmer’s Market bigger in 2nd week & Sarah reveals her cake secret!
Nellysford, VA
Photography & info by Tommy Stafford
Nelson County Life Magazine
Talk about a crowd, it was even bigger and better this past weekend at the Nellysford Farmer’s Market than the opening day. If you’ve ever been you know how it improves each week as new produce starts coming in! Remember last week we told you about Sarah Leake from Basic Necessities? She revealed her new business secret to us. Scroll on down.
Below Bill & Wendy Hess of Taylor’s Creek Road take a break from a very busy Farmer’s Market in Nellysford. If you’ve never seen Bill’s excellent glass work go by and check it out. This guy has talent!
These guys aren’t exactly the stuffy violin players serenading you with romantic music in an Italian restaurant. They’re even more fun! They were the music on hand this past Saturday.
Ok, Sarah has revealed her talented baking side to us. Sarah Leake officially unveiled her custom cake baking business. She’s toying with the name for it. We suggested Nelson Cake Company, other’s say call it Sarah’s. Regardless, this gal knows how to make some very pretty cakes. Look for more info on her custom cakes of all kinds. Not to worry, she’ll still be behind the counter at Basic Necessities in Nellysford each week from Tuesday through Friday. Whew, I was worried for a bit!
Though not a beagle like ours, he’s certainly in the family. Lots of folks bring their dogs down to visit at the market. This was just one of them!
Support all of the local farmers, merchants and growers by visiting the Farmer’s Market each Saturday through the entire summer. We’re talking very good produce and food, along with all kinds of neat crafts too!
Mr. T’s Monday forecast – Remember to refresh your browser for the latest updates!
Good Monday to everyone,
What a near perfect weekend. We had some showers around the area Saturday, but Sunday cleared out and became sunny. Sunday evening Yvette and I ate on the deck at D’Ambola’s Restaurant on 151 in Afton. It was perfect weather to sit outside!
Lots went on this weekend so be sure to scroll down past the weather when you are done here and read on. We’ll be adding more later today as well.
Monday’s Forecast Map
After a cool night last night we recover nicely today. We reached amorning low of 35.2 degrees here @ NCL-Nelson County Life Magazine around 6:30 AM Monday morning. In Lovingston @ NCL-TIger Fuel they reached a morning low of 38.5 just before 6 AM. High pressue is anchored right over Virginia today. It slowly drifts east over the next 24 hours. That means sunny skies and highs making it to the low and mid 70’s in the valley at places like Nellysford, Beech Grove, Lovingston, and Shipman. On the mountains at Wintergreen, Crab Tree Falls, and the Blue Ridge Parkway, look for sunny skies and temps in the mid 60’s with light NE winds. Lows Monday will fall into the low 50’s valley and inverted to the mid and perhaps upper 50’s mountains due to increasing SW winds overnight.
Tuesday will be much warmer with sunny skies and temps in the mid and upper 80’s valley and mid 70’s mountains. It will be breezy with winds from 10-20 MPH from the SW. Those SW winds will bring in moisture that sets up up for the next rain and thunderstorms mid-week. A cold front over the North Central US makes it to us by mid-week.
After the rain leaves us sometime Thursday early, sunny skies return with cooler temps. Right now next weekend looks great…so far. Remember that’s many days out!
Have a great Monday and spend as much time as you can outdoors, it’s be wonderful day.

TWNF Symposium, Covesville, Cardinal Point
This was one busy weekend across Nelson and adjoining counties. So let’s get right to it!
Our very busy NCL photographer Paul Purpura was all over the place getting these great shots.
Below is one of the many nature walks held by The Wintergreen Nature Foundation this past weekend as part of their Wildflower Symposium.
Below, Doug Coleman on the right, executive director of TWNF, takes a break on the porch with a Blue Heeler and one of the many folks that were at this weekend’s symposium.
Look for more pictures of this year’s symposium in the June issue of NCL!
Far away from Devil’s Knob just over the county line along 29 North at The Covesville Store, Rick and Sarah Ovenshire put on a real spread as they held The Covesville Music Festival and community celebration to bring groups of local people together to celebrate historic Covesville past & present. Rick and Sarah’s event also put a special emphasis on The Covesville Child Development Center Scholarship Fund. These guys know how to put on a show and lots of food, this is a great event every time they have it!

Again, look for more of what happened at this May’s Covesville Music Fest in next month’s issue of NCL
Back in Nelson folks had a great time this weekend over at Cardinal Point Winery where the The Guano Boys brought their mix of reggae, ska, calypso, and Afro-Caribbean funk to folks stopping in. Proceeds from the concert helped out Nelson County Almost Home Pet Adoption Center. Always enjoy going over to Cardinal. The Gormans can put on a great afternoon and make some awesome wine!
Paul had a very busy weekend covering all of the neat stuff happening! Thanks for the good shots Paul and see more of his photos in the June issue of NCL!
Animal House Ball @ Oak Ridge
Photography by Tommy Stafford
Nelson County Life Magazine
Hard to believe that it’s been two years since the last Animal House Ball to benefit Almost Home Pet Adoption Center here in Nelson. This was the first time the event was held at the Carriage House on Oak Ridge Estate in Arrington. What a beautiful place and a great event. We’ll have much more on this in the June issue but here’s preview.
Below Bo Newell owner of Mountain Area Realty auctions of some of the really cool things at this year’s event.
Here Taylor Smack, left , co-owner of the soon to open Blue Mountain Brewery in Afton, Bruce Flight of Richmond (center) and Mandi Smack (far right) Taylor’s wife and marketing manager of the brewery, chat it up with Yvette before the auction begins.
Below John Croxall of Wintergreen Resort Premier Properties (far left) introduces himself to Jeff Vogelgesang and his wife Jan Smith of Heards Mountain. Jeff and Jan donated their music as part of a package that auctioned off for about $4000.00 That will help out a lot of animals!
George McKinney of Stoney Creek (right) stops for a pose with Yvette in the lobby of the new carriage house addition at Oak Ridge.
The attendance at this year’s ball was terrific! The ball room was packed and everyone had a great time.
We’ll have lots more in June’s NCL!
