File photo : Nelson Commonwealth Attorney Daniel Rutherford made the announcement on Friday – February 8, 2019
Lovingtson
Nelson County, Virginia
Release Via Nelson CA office:
“Friday afternoon, Nelson County Commonwealth’s Attorney Daniel Rutherford
announced that four individuals, Amanda White, Charles Anthony “Tony” Fitzgerald, Dakota
Johnson and James Douglas Warren, pled guilty to their involvement in a corrupt organization of
individuals that trafficked methamphetamine into Nelson County and Central Virginia. Each of
the four pled guilty to one count of racketeering. Fitzgerald and Johnson also had additional
felony charges of possession of Methamphetamine. These individuals were connected with
Phillip Bennet of Atlanta, Georgia, who pled guilty to two counts of racketeering and enhanced
distribution of Methamphetamine in the Nelson County Circuit Court on June 29, 2018. Also
connected with these individuals: Otis Knapp, Joe Louis Earhart, Kathleen Howard Varner,
James Hunsinger, John Wayne Lawhorne and Donald Gerald Coles, all of whom previously pled
guilty to racketeering in the Nelson County Circuit Court.
From March 2016 through November 2017, Earhart, Coles, Varner, Johnson and
Hunsinger transported Methamphetamine from Atlanta, Georgia and Charlotte, North Carolina to
the Central Virginia area and then facilitated the distribution to Lawhorne, Warren and other
individuals in Nelson and the surrounding counties. After that Methamphetamine was
distributed, funds were wired back to Bennet to purchase more Methamphetamine. At the outset
of the operation, Amanda White facilitated Bennet in collecting payment for the
Methamphetamine that was trafficked. In addition to money wires, White would set up bank
accounts in her name so that Knapp and Earhart could deposit proceeds from drug sales into
those accounts. Those proceeds would then be given to Bennet. At the height of the ring’s
operation, one pound of Methamphetamine was trafficked every week into Central Virginia.
These charges stem from a lengthy investigation by the Virginia State Police Bureau of
Criminal Investigation’s Appomattox Field Office, the Skyline Drug Task Force, of which the
Nelson County Sheriff’s Office is a member, the Jefferson Area Drug Enforcement (J.A.D.E.)
Task Force and the Office of the Commonwealth’s Attorney for Nelson County.
“The guilty pleas from these eleven individuals represent an ongoing fulfillment of a
promise I made 3 years ago when I announced my candidacy for Nelson County
Commonwealth’s Attorney. My office will continue to aggressively prosecute those who traffic
and distribute drugs that come into Nelson County.”

Distillery also nominated by industry peers in three categories for the ICONS of Whisky Awards for 2019
Lovingston
Nelson County, Virginia
American Single Malt whisky distillery Virginia Distillery Company’s Port Cask Finished Virginia-Highland Whisky was recognized last night for the third year in a row with the ‘Best American Blended Malt’ at the World Whiskies Awards.
The American results were announced in New York on January 30. The World Whiskies Awards highlights whiskies from around the world. The international results will be announced on March 28, 2019 at an awards dinner in London.
Virginia Distillery Company was also nominated by industry peers for the ICONS of Whisky Awards, designed to celebrate the people and places behind a brand’s whisky. The category nominations were for Visitor Attraction Manager (Amanda Beckwith, Guest Experience and Education Manager), Master Distillery/Master Blender (Ian Thomas, Distillery Director) and Craft Producer of the Year, for a second year in a row.
“Everything we do at the distillery is a team effort. I couldn’t be more excited about last night’s results – not only winning for the third year in a row but also for the individual nominations our team members received,” Virginia Distillery Company CEO Gareth Moore said. “Since we opened our doors, our sights have been set on the release of Courage & Conviction in 2020. We’re thrilled the early stocks have shown so well and that we have such a great team in place to make it happen.”
Port Cask Finished Virginia-Highland Whisky is available at the Virginia Distillery Company Visitors Center, in select markets throughout the U.S. and online through Passion Spirits. The Port Cask Finished Virginia-Highland Whisky is made from 100% malted barley. Virginia Distillery Company marries its American single malt whisky distilled and aged on-site in Virginia with single malt whisky from Scotland. The whisky is then cask-finished in port-style wine barrels sourced primarily from Virginia to add nuance and complexity.
The awards are a part of the World Drinks Awards program which launched in 2007 with the World Whiskies Awards and World Beer Awards. Judges for the awards included a panel composed of leading journalists, specialist drinks retailers, bartenders/mixologists and hoteliers. Each entry is tasted blind, and in addition to nose, palate and finish the judges look for balance, character, complexity, quality and functionality when judging. The ICONs awards were selected through voting by industry members.
Virginia Distillery Company continues to focus on innovation across all products and always maintains the highest quality in whichever form it takes. The profile of the Virginia-Highland Whisky series been bolstered by marrying in the distillery’s own Virginia whisky, which showcases early stocks of the base for Virginia Distillery Company’s signature American Single Malt product Courage & Conviction, which has been aging for over three years.
For more information, visit the distillery’s website.
About Virginia Distillery Company:
Virginia Distillery Company whiskies yield a complex taste, due to the influence of Virginia’s Blue Ridge Mountains and maturation in former Bourbon, Sherry and Cuvée wine casks. The distillery is currently crafting its ultra-premium American Single Malt whisky, Courage & Conviction, at the distillery located in Lovingston, Virginia. The casks have been resting since November 2015 and the flagship product will be released in the Spring of 2020, with a pre-release product called “Prelude” coming out in the Fall of 2019. While Courage & Conviction ages, customers may enjoy the Virginia-Highland Whisky series.
Governor Ralph Northam today announced that Potter’s Craft Cider, LLC will invest $1.56 million to relocate and expand their existing hard cider production facility and add a tasting room. As a result of this expansion, the company will create 12 new jobs in Albemarle County and more than quadruple its cider production, while continuing to source 100 percent of its apples from Virginia.
“This major expansion by Potter’s Craft Cider is a strong testament to Virginia’s reputation as a top craft beverage destination and highlights the important connection between our flourishing agriculture and tourism sectors,” said Governor Northam. “Investments like these bring new jobs and vitality to rural parts of the Commonwealth, while creating new markets for our farmers and contributing positively to regional economic growth.”
Opened in 2011 in Free Union, just outside of Charlottesville, Potter’s Craft Cider has since established a strong presence in the marketplace with their traditional and inventive cider varieties. Growing wholesale demands and customer desires for a tasting room experience fueled the duo to purchase Neve Hall, a former Episcopalian church built in 1924, for their relocation and expansion. Over the next three years, the company will renovate the historic building into a tasting room, construct a new production facility and establish an apple orchard on-site.
“As one of Virginia’s oldest producers in the fast-growing hard cider industry, I am pleased to see Potter’s Craft Cider continue to grow and succeed in the Commonwealth,” said Secretary of Agriculture and Forestry Bettina Ring. “I am excited to partner with Albemarle County and Potter’s Craft Cider through the AFID program as we continue to support Virginia’s apple farmers through this thriving industry.”
“We are thrilled to bring life back into this historic Albemarle County property. The 100-year-old stone church is a perfect venue for showcasing our unique ciders,” said Potter’s Craft Cider co-founders Tim Edmond and Dan Potter. “We are very grateful for the support of the Commonwealth and the county as we embark on this exciting new chapter for our company.”
The Commonwealth is partnering with Albemarle County, the Albemarle County Economic Development Authority and Potter’s Craft Cider on this project through the Governor’s Agriculture and Forestry Industries Development (AFID) Fund, which is administered by the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (VDACS). Governor Northam approved a $50,000 grant from the AFID Fund to secure the project for Virginia, which Albemarle County and the County EDA will match with local funds.
“Agribusiness is one of our target industries, as it strengthens our rural areas,” said Chair of the Albemarle County Board of Supervisors Ned Gallaway. “The Board strongly supports Potter’s Craft Cider’s plans for investment and job creation in Albemarle. Our expected participation in this grant not only contributes to their growth and success, but to the growth and success of other businesses across Albemarle County, including agricultural producers, retailers, and area tourism.”
“We view this project as a great example of how the Economic Development Authority can help achieve the county’s vision by partnering with businesses to grow and expand, right here in Albemarle County,” said Albemarle County EDA Chairman Rod Gentry. “We look forward to supporting this excellent opportunity.”
“We need to be about encouraging the growth of local, home grown businesses. Indeed, America is all about entrepreneurs taking chances, creating jobs and driving economic activity,” said Senator Creigh Deeds. “I applaud the Governor for recognizing this chance to grow a local business and congratulate Tim and Dan on their initiative and success.”
“It’s so exciting to see our region’s agricultural businesses expand. Especially in diversified ways that grow the local economy,” said Delegate Matt Fariss. “The cider business uses a product produced in our community that had previously not been taken full advantage of because of transportation costs. The tasting room also adds to our collection of tourist attractions which will create jobs and income for Central Virginia.”
