Our Paul Purpura was out this past weekend at The Wheelin’ For Sportsmen Hunt near Massies Mills at The Saunders Farm just off Route 56W. These cool crisp days are when lots of hunters get out and begin enjoying the outdoors of the Fall season in Central Virginia. The Wheelin’ program in conjunction with The National Wildlife Turkey Federation, helps get disabled hunters back out enjoying their sport.

We’ll be telling you more about these fantastic folks in the coming days!

Thanks for everyone being so patient and understanding about the custom weather.
And thanks to both Ann Strober for the shot above of the distant thunderstorm that we missed here in Nelson on Tuesday and to Milly Colella for the nice shot of the low clouds in the valley over on Tommy’s Weather page.

Many of you precede us in having children, so you know far better than us the transition as you come home from the hospital. We made it back yesterday with Adam Thomas Stafford, and all is well! Yes, we were up till the wee hours of the morning, but nothing unusual for a newborn!

We appreciate all of the nice comments from you as well. We’ve heard from so many of you and some of our old TV News colleagues as well. Everyone has been so nice and we thank you all so much for you help and support as we make the transition to a new life.

We’ll be catching up on a few things today, then we’ll be back in the saddle on our web edition.

The Area Near Martin's Store Intersection of 6 & 151 Where The Carjacking Began

Facts of a harrowing Monday morning ordeal near Martin’s Store are still under investigation by The Nelson County Sheriff’s Department this evening. According to Sheriff, David Brooks, a man was carjacked around 11 AM Monday morning near the intersection of Route 6 & 151 in the Martin’s Store area. “Two black males appeared to need help and waived down a passing driver. When he stopped they pulled weapons and jumped in the car and made the driver take off,” said Sheriff Brooks. Eventually the two made the man drive Route 60 to Eagle Mountain where they switched cars, kicked out the carjacked driver, and took off in a dirty white pickup, Sheriff Brooks says. The carjacked driver was eventually able to call for help around 2 PM.

Sheriff Brooks tells NCL this appears to be a random act and not connected to any organized group targeting the area.

As of late Monday evening, authorities were still looking for suspects.

In a moment that brought tears to many of the people standing by, balloons were released Friday afternoon at the annual (TWNF) The Wintergreen Nature Foundation Golf Tourney, now known as The Sara Ott Memorial Golf Classic. It was a tradition started this year inspired by Sara’s grandchildren after her death.

Sara Ott passed away earlier this year leaving behind her husband, Frank along with her grown children, and grandchildren. Sara and Frank have been the coordinators of the annual golf classic each year that’s the single biggest fundraiser for TWNF.

The Accident Scene On Oak Ridge Road Just After 8 AM Friday Morning : NCSD Photo

As we first told you here early Friday morning, a Shipman man lost his life after a head-on collision along Oak Ridge Road in Eastern Nelson County, Virginia. In additional details released by Nelson County Sheriff David Brooks this afternoon, the victim is identified as 43-year-old Richard Evans of Shipman. It was originally thought the last name was Bivens for a short time.

“In the pick up were 3 juveniles from Schuyler, Virginia. At this point it looks like the pickup truck crossed the center lane. Injuries ranged from serious to minor,” Sheriff Brooks tells NCL.

The injured juveniles were taken to UVA Medical Center in Charlottesville.

As news of the accident spread, people who knew the victims began expressing their condolences online. The following was a comment submitted in an earlier post:

This is really a shock for us students at Nelson County High School. Some of us knew them and some of us respected them greatly. We hope that the one in critical condition pulls a miracle for us all. This is an extreme heartache for those who knew Mr. Evans. We are in sympathy of this horrible accident. It happened so fast! It shows how precious life is. WE wish luck to those who are hurting and praying right now. You’re in our thoughts….Forever. Hold onto your loved ones to get through this experience. God is with you and watching over you. Bless the family that is going through this and all who loved him. Bless his children, His wife, and his friends for this tragedy.

We are willing to do whatever it takes to help. Praying for good news! And bless the EMT’s and the police for doing whatever it took to take care of this.. your in our hearts. A great deal of stress im sure was put on these life-savers of nelson county so. bless you and god is with you, too. For the strong ones who ” clean up the mess… when there is one” You’re doing your job and what a great job it is.

Thank you for this oppurtunity to share these feelings.

Sincerly and with Sympathy,

Taylor Kesler & Holie Mitchell (students at NCHS)
