Though most of the ice melted Wednesday with the warmer temperatures, some areas particularly in the higher elevations may still have some icing conditions after freezing weather again Wednesday night. That’s why officials have put their 2 hours scheduling delay into effect for Nelson County Public Schools on Thursday 1.29.08.

Temperatures on Thursday are forecast to be in the mid 40’s, so most any ice left should thaw throughout the afternoon hours.

It Did Snow Somewhere! Just Not Here!

Washington, D.C.
Well, we got plenty of ice here in Nelson County over the past day and Tuesday night, but not far up the road they saw a nice blanket of snow. Paul Luke, who we worked with back in the TV news days sent these shots to us. Paul is now based in D.C. and even makes his way to Nelson from time to time to visit with us here and get away from the beltway!

Thanks for dropping the shots our way Paul, and if we couldn’t have snow, at least we can look at the pretty scenes from there, and dream of a snow! Better hurry, the official start of Spring is only weeks away, believe it or not!

No Snow Yet : Sleet In Valley So Far : Updated 12:30 PM EST

Update: 12:30 PM EST
Look for scattered periods of sleet and freezing rain to continue affecting parts of Nelson and Central Virginia throughout the afternoon. Warmer air is starting to advance toward Nelson County and may briefly get temps above the freezing mark. I’d say the prospects for any snow accumulation are pretty slim, but we still have the potential for icing later this evening into the night. After midnight, temps may actually begin rising. The NWS Blacksburg, which covers the Amherst & Rockbridge County areas are already backing off of the snow predictions but continuing mentioning the potential for ice. The D.C NWS continues to call for 1-3 inches of total accumulation by late tonight, again I don’t see it folks.

If you want lots of real snow, this isn’t your storm. 🙁

Previous post earlier today
So far folks in Nelson County have only seen sleet and freezing rain this morning. The frozen precipitation has been enough to cause a few accidents across the area, mainly confined to I-64 on top of the mountain. At 10:25 AM troopers reported I-64 eastbound at the 127 mile marker shutdown due to an accident.

The wintry mix will increase in intensity as the day wears on. Since temperatures are at or near the freezing mark a mixed bag of winter weather can be expected. And as we have been talking about all morning, this has a greater potential to be a freezing rain and sleet event vs snow. None the less, NWS forecasts still are calling for anywhere from 2-4″ or 3-5″ depending on which sources you view. Personally I don’t see it, but we’ll see what pans out.

One report from Wintergreen Mountain sent to us via our Facebook page said :

“It is all freezing rain and dense fog. It was heavy freezing rain when I first arrived but is letting up some now. Took me over 40 minutes to get from the guard house to the Mountain Inn.”

Hat tip to Kim Chappell over at www.ExperienceWintergreen.com

The air has been generally very dry until this morning and it has taken the atmosphere several hours to moisten up, taking awhile for the more substantial freezing precip to move in. Radar views to our west still show a vast area of precipitation to move into the area later today and tonight.

It looks like we’ll get something today from the approaching winter weather. Now “whether” it will be something as beautiful as the picture from a 2005 snow we had, remains to be seen. But it’s a pretty sure bet that we’ll get something out of this over the next day or so. Obviously we can be everywhere at once so send in your weather photos from your part of the county to let us and others know what’s happening there! It could be shots of ice on the trees, a VDOT truck doing it’s thing on the highways, or just about anything!

Send your photos to: weather-at-nelsoncountylife.com and we’ll put them up on our site here!

Winter Storm Warning For Nelson & Area : Nelson Schools Closed

Nelson County, Virginia – Updated 6:30 AM EST
An approaching winter storm is starting to impact Nelson & much of Central Virginia today thru Wednesday. Winter Storm Watches and advisories were replaced with Winter Storm Warnings by Tuesday morning. While little snow had started just before daylight Tuesday in Nelson, regional radar shows a broad area of wintry weather just to the west working it’s way in the area.

According to closing reports on the NBC-29 website, Nelson County along with many other area schools are closed.

Predictions are for anywhere from 3-5 inches of snow, sleet & freezing rain with this storm when all is said and done. We’ll start out with mainly snow today, but another area of weather moves in late this evening bringing, unfortunately, freezing rain into the mix. As of Tuesday morning predictions of about 1/4″ of ice are forecast on top of what snow falls today.

At 6:15 AM EST, sleet and freezing rain had begun here at the NCL office in the Rockfish Valley, but now snowfall has been noted. Depending on how much warm air aloft stays in place will determine how much and what type of precipitation we get. Regardless of the type of precipitation, there’s plenty of moisture for this system to tap into so it’s pretty certain we will get some form of wintry weather throughout the day into Wednesday.

By Wednesday, temperatures will have warmed enough for the precipitation to tun to just plain rain by the afternoon, but we may start out the day with freezing rain during the early morning hours.

We will be updating the site throughout the day, so check back often for the latest information.
