Folks awoke to a beautiful landscape of snow Tuesday morning after roughly 5 inches of snow fell in the mountains of Nelson County, Virginia. The snow started about two hours before dark on Monday afternoon and continued into the nighttime hours. Our Paul Purpura just returned with these beautiful shots! Thank you Paul!

In the valley below 1500 feet some snow fell, but less than an inch was measured in most locations.

John Taylor just dropped us this photo of the snow that fell last night at Wintergreen on the mountains. While the valley didn’t see any measurable snowfall, above 2000 feet plenty of snow fell. John tells me his shot was taken around 3300 feet.

All areas along the the Blue Ridge Parkway down to roughly 1500 feet got a nice snowfall Monday night.

Very nice, John! Looks great from here in the valley too!

Our Paul Purpura has been out gathering up shots as well and we’ll posting those shortly!

Nelson County Pubic Schools will be closed today due to overnight snow that fell.

“The skies have cleared and it is a beautiful morning here at the top of Wintergreen. At 7:55 am, temp was 20.7, the snowguns are “on”, and a fluffy natural snowfall measures 5.0 to 5.5″ depending upon the exact spot up here,” John Taylor on Devil’s Knob comments this morning.

Though most of the valley didn’t receive any measurable snowfall, in the mountains around 5 & 1/2 inches fell overnight in many locations.

Enjoy the day off!

As we first started talking about before dark Monday, snow started falling up at Wintergreen Mountain, though it was only rain in the valley Monday night before midnight. Our Paul Purpura grabbed a few quick and dirty shots of the snowfall up there. And John Taylor over at Devil’s Knob has been sending us snowfall depth reports as well. As of 9 PM Monday night he said they had about 3.5″ of snow.

As we talked about in Tommy’s Weather for Monday, light snow began in the late afternoon hours up on the mountains. Hat tip to Kim Chappell over at www.experiencenelsoncounty.com from dropping us the photo above about the time it was starting.

Look for the snow to continue into the nighttime hours with an accumulation of 1-3 inches in the mountains by the time it stops on Tuesday. Along and west of the BRP there is a Winter Weather Advisory in effect until 6 AM Tuesday

Down in the valley around an inch of snow is expected by Tuesday morning.

More details over in Tommy Weather, and updated info out later this evening.

Nelson County, Virginia
The weekend ended up very nice for the 1st day of February, but several changes are on the way as we start the the new month. Warmer temps have allowed much of the ice from a few days ago to thaw nicely like the shot above from the Tye River near Montebello, Virginia. Much colder weather is front and center over the next 48 hours as well as a shot at some possible snow.

Thankfully no below 0° temps like those we saw about 10 days ago. A friend and former TV weather colleague of mine back in KY, Lew Jetton, is still without power after the most recent ice storm that slightly affected us here in Nelson. It could be up to three weeks before they get power back in places. It is a serious situation there and in several other areas close by.

All of the details over in Tommy’s Weather or by playing the audio version to your right just below the temperature panel.
