For the second year in a row Grete Eliassen American-born, Norwegian-raised skier, visited Wintergreen Resort to meet and greet fans. Grete won back-to-back gold at WX ‘06 and ‘05 and silver at WX ‘07. Grete distinguishes herself from the other women by going huge in the pipe. She learned to ski in Minnesota but raced as a teenager for the Norwegian Nat’l Ski Team when her family moved there in 1999. Our Paul Purpura grabbed these shots as Grete met her fans. She also handed out awards and was the commentator at this year’s Double Cross Competition.

CVEC Reports Power Outages In Adjoining Counties : 3.2.09 Updated 3PM

CVEC Electric Service in Appomattox County
Lovingston, VA, March 2, 2009

CVEC Electric Service Update – 3 PM
Lovingston, VA, March 2, 2009 – The number of reported outages on the CVEC system is presently at 1991. Line crews have been working to restore power but progress is slow going with over a foot of snow on the ground in some areas, particularly in the eastern section of the service territory where most of the outages have occurred. (See the HYPERLINK “http://cvecinfo.com/News/storms/Outage_Summary.html” Outage Summary on the CVEC webpage for additional details.)
The snow limits or delays equipment access in many areas where there are trees on powerlines, broken poles and wire on the ground. While CVEC has been able to restore power in some areas, additional outages occurring throughout the day have kept the number of affected CVEC members close to 2000 in number.
CVEC crews will continue working late into the night, attempting to restore service for as many members as possible. However, the Cooperative anticipates that the restoration effort will extend into tomorrow before the power restoration effort can be completed.
Those members currently without electric service should make preparations in the event that their service is not restored this evening. If remaining in your home could present a health risk or cause undue discomfort, please contact friends, family members or the local authorities to discuss moving to another overnight location.

CVEC Electric Service Update
Lovingston, VA, March 2, 2009 – 9 AM – Transmission service has been restored to the Appomattox, Pamplin and Curdsville Substations, helping to reduce the number of affected CVEC members from 4000 to 1600. The Columbia Metering point remains without service, affecting 445 utility customers. CVEC will let you know when the metering point receives power.
In the Pamplin substation area, a tree on a line has 480 members to be without electric service. Crews are working to resolve the cause of that outage.
There are scattered outages around the remainder of the eastern portion of the CVEC service territory affecting a total of 675 members. Crews from all locations are working at the fault locations from Appomattox to Louisa counties.
Look for additional updates as information becomes available.

Central Virginia Electric Cooperative (CVEC), reports that 4000 cooperative members are without power. Cumberland, Appomattox and Buckingham counties are the areas with the heaviest concentration of outages, numbering over 3200 affected homes and businesses in those areas.
The cause of the outages is due to a loss of power at the Columbia, Curdsville, Pamplin and Appomattox substation and metering points. CVEC receives power at those facilities from the regional transmission system. When power is restored to these affected substations, then service will be restored to many cooperative members and CVEC will address individual outages along the distribution lines.

As predicted a potent winter storm system moved into the area last night. While areas west of I-95 had the lesser amounts around 3-5 inches, locations to the east got a little more. Here at NCL in the Rockfish Valley we got around 3 inches by daylight Monday.

Winter Storm Warnings and advisories continues through mid afternoon across Central Virginia.

A mixed bag of Winter Storm Warnings and advisories continue across the area through mid-afternoon. I’d look for them to all be canceled before then or certainly allowed to expire. Another brief round of snow can be expected before the noon hour today with some locations picking up another 1-2 inches before the snow tapers off by early afternoon. Partly sunny skies will return by this afternoon, with brutally cold temperatures settling in overnight. Believe it or not, we’ll be ithe mid 60’s by the next weekend.

A complete wrap up over in Tommy’s Weather tonight.

Nelson County, Virginia
Heavy snow continued Sunday evening across Nelson County and Central Virginia. Due to hazardous road conditions developing, Nelson County Public School officials have closed school on Monday 3.2.2009. Numerous accidents have started occurring across the area as well due to the heavy snow. Snow will continue into early Monday morning as well as increasingly gusty winds out of the north up to 35 MPH. The heaviest amounts of snow can be expected east of I-95, but many areas near Nelson can expect between 4-7 inches of snow by the time it all stops late Monday morning.

Nelson County, Virginia

As of 3 PM EST moderate to sometimes heavy snow started falling in portions of Nelson County, Virginia. Temperatures around 3:45 PM we were just above the freezing mark at 34° in the Rockfish Valley here at our office, Up on the mountain at our station atop The Wintergreen Nature Foundation at 3500 feet, plenty of cold air is available with a late afternoon temp of 26°. Snowfall in the valley is melting on contact since temps are not at freezing just yet, but they will fall to just below freezing in the overnight hours.

Currently a coastal low pressure area will continue working up the eastern seaboard and any change in the track of that low will affect how much snow we will see. Right now the heavier snow amounts look to be east of I-95, but amounts even in the neighborhood of 4-7 inches are very possible in our area. The more significant snowfall will come after dark.

This is part of a system that has already dumped as much as 12 to 20 inches of snow in the mid-south region of the country near Memphis, Tennessee. The snow has caused portions of I-40 to come to a complete standstill as seen in this aerial video from the NBC affiliate in Memphis.

Though it does not appear, at this time, Nelson will get hit with that much snow, it does look like amounts between 4 to 7 inches are possible.

Overnight Saturday lighter amounts of snow fell in Nelson with roughly 1 to 2 inches in the valley and 1-3 in the mountains.

This is a changing and developing situation almost hourly, so continue to monitor updates here. I will have much great detail posted later this morning.

The Winter Storm Watch area as of late Saturday night, highlighted in blue by The National Weather Service.

Nelson County, Virginia
As we first discussed yesterday, a, still, developing winter storm may impact Nelson and Central Virginia over the weekend into early next next week. As of Saturday night, The National Weather Service (NWS) continues a Winter Storm Watch that takes effect from Sunday afternoon through Monday morning. In the bulletin posted below, the NWS mentions that some areas could see several inches of snow depending on the track. To our west in portions of Western Tennessee and the mid-south near Memphis, snow amounts between 5 to 18, yes 18, inches were already reported late Saturday night.

I have personally been watching this system for a couple of days, and it really gained my attention Friday, but I am still not convinced it will have a 5 inch impact here. Regardless, the elements are combining for this to be a significant winter event if everything lines up and it stays on the projected path. As I always caution with winter events, they can change on a dime, but it does look interesting over the next 36 hours. Continue to check here for updates and I’ll be closely watching this as well, posting updates as conditions and new forecasts come out this weekend.

Martins Store Substation BPL Update

February 27, 2009

Great News! The long awaited connection to the Martins Store Substation head end is now active. The circuit was released to IBEC this morning and we now have access. You may recall that it was due two weeks ago, but one of the T-1 lines that comprise the circuit was not working. The problem was identified as a bad card and Verizon put in an order for a replacement only to find that the replacement was also bad.

Now that the circuit is operational, all three injection points are “hot” and Internet traffic is flowing down the powerlines. As with the areas served by Woods Mill injection point and with the Afton injection point, the IBEC engineers will start activating and configuring the BPL backbone equipment that hangs along the powerlines served by the Martins Store substation injection point. Each unit will be tested and brought online.

Along with the engineers in the IBEC Network Operations Center, the Davis H. Elliott crews will be working along the lines, to help resolve any local problems that appear with the BPL network activations. IBEC would have been aware of and resolved these problems when they first hung the BPL equipment if the T-1 lines were operational at that time. Now that the BPL network is passing Internet data, the engineers and linemen are addressing any locations where the BPL signal is blocked or less than optimal.

IBEC is bringing subscribers online as each section of the network is tested. Last week we described the BPL sections of the Martins Store substation area.

The injection point at the Martins Store substation feeds three BPL circuits:
· Afton 1 – runs north along Route 151 to Greenfield Road
· Woods Mill 1 – runs along Route 6 to Route 29 and then to points south
· Nellysford 1

As we reported this injection point now has an Internet connection and the activation process will begin. IBEC will contact you when they are ready to activate you BPL modem. IBEC also has more BPL equipment to hang in some sections of this area.

The injection point on Rockfish River Road is divided into two BPL circuits:
· Woods Mill 3 – furthest away from the substation and
· Woods Mill 2 – closer to the substation and Route 29.

Crews focused on this area last week and found a number of noise sources that needed to be corrected as well as some equipment that needed to be replaced. Work will continue next week with an additional crew. IBEC also has an additional engineer in the field to help mitigate any issues that might arise. We have had some good reports from people whose service has been activated and hope that others will send comments to service@ibec.net.

The two Afton injection point BPL circuits begin at Tanbark Drive. Last week, we erred in noting that it ran along Route 29. Here is a better description:
· Afton 3 section is located furthest from the substation, running north along Route 151 and to points east and west.
· Afton 2 section runs south along Route 151 and to points east and west and serves down to Greenfield Road.

The Afton section did not have as many noise issues as the Woods Mill section, but the crews and engineers worked on those that were present as well as any blocking issues. Next week, the crews must finish hanging customer access units in the Afton 3 section. We also have has some good feedback from those online in this area and hope to hear more as we unblock that area and activate new subscribers.

With the addition of another crew and the troubleshooter, next week should be productive and open great sections of the BPL network for online access. If you are contacted by IBEC by telephone, please get back in touch with us, so that we can activate your modem and ensure that you have an optimized configuration.
Thanks again for your patience,
IBEC Customer Service

Winter Weather Possible Over Weekend

0

snow

Nelson County, Virginia

A developing winter weather system may provide at least a wintry mix of sleet, snow and freezing rain across Central Virginia and Nelson County this weekend. In the early morning hours Saturday, mountainous regions of Nelson County may begin seeing some snow, but better chances will be over the weekend, in particular Saturday afternoon and night. The exact timing of this system is critical as to how much and what kind of wintry precipitation will fall.

We will continue monitoring this storm system as it develops and will update our main weather page as well as Tommy’s Audio weather to your right as things change.
