Back in March of 2006 we featured local Nelson artist, Bill Hess, on the cover of Nelson County Life Magazine. Bill is a very neat guy who takes old glass bottles, crushes them, then melts them back into molten glass to make all kinds of new designs. Others are taking notice of what Bill’s been doing from his studio here in Afton.

This past week NBC-29 in Chatlottesville featured Bill in an on air story. You watch it by following this link:

The Wedding Singer kicked off Friday night at Nelson County High in Lovingston with tons of folks turning out to see the ever popular performance. Thanks to Tom Dennis of www.dennisphotographyonline.com for sharing some of his photos with us.

Another evening performance will be held tonight at 7:30PM, with an afternoon performance Sunday at 2PM.
Another evening performance will be held tonight at 7:30PM, with an afternoon performance Sunday at 2PM.

The production takes you back to 1985 with rock-star wannabe Robbie Hart as New Jersey’s favorite wedding singer. Robbie is the life of the party—until his own fiancée,Linda, leaves him at the altar. Shot through the heart, Robbie makes every wedding he plays as disastrous as his own. Then we meet Julia, a winsome waitress who wins his affection. Only trouble is Julia is about to be married to a Wall Street shark, and unless Robbie can pull off the performance of the decade, the girl of his dreams will be gone forever. This new release gives us a new score that pays loving homage to the pop songs of the 1980s, and takes us back to a time when hair was big, greed was good, collars were up, and a wedding singer just might be the coolest guy in the room.

Martins Store Substation BPL Update : 3.13.09

The latest BPL email blast update from IBEC as of Friday evening 3.13.09.

Martins Store Substation BPL Update

March 13, 2009

This week the crews returned and we were able to continue troubleshooting deployment issues and deploy some new BPL backbone. The BPL equipment has also been helpful in identifying loose or broken electrical equipment such as insulators and crossarm supports.

We have made significant progress in clearing up some noise issues that were preventing some customers from coming online in all regions of the deployment. We have almost completed the installation at Afton 3 and are currently focusing on finishing up the installations at Woodsmill 2 and 3 and Afton 2. IBEC was able to bring online over 50 BRUs and over 30 CAUs this week.

The major issue we are currently facing is dealing with more electrical noise than expected. This noise affects the BPL signal and makes it difficult to get good connections between the units. This issue is correctable, but requires more time and resources to repair as the noise signatures are identified and then located to match the noise pattern with the actual source of the noise in the power grid. We are also adjusting our network design in some areas to gain more consistent throughput and to bring you a more reliable network. We would like to reiterate that these processes normally occur during the initial deployment and typically happen as each unit is originally hung. However, due to the issues Verizon had with activating our data circuits, we were forced to hang the equipment blindly and come back afterwards to mitigate these issues.

IBEC has dispatched additional field support for the next three weeks to help any customers who are having issues connecting the modems in their homes to the network.

If you are contacted by IBEC by telephone, please get back in touch with us, so that we can activate your modem and ensure that you have an optimized configuration. at 888-IBEC-BPL or 888-423-2275. We have had many good reports from people whose service has been activated in the past few weeks and hope that others will send their comments to service@ibec.net.

Thanks again for your patience,

Wintergreen Mountain
Nelson County, Virginia
Friday 3.13.2009

Around 2-3 inches of snow fell Friday morning in the mountains of Nelson County. Virginia, with 1-2 inches in the valley. Our Paul Purpura grabbed some really pretty tight shots of the snow there. Most of the snow in the valley had melted by noon. Over the next few days unsettled weather will be the drill for Nelson County. Several disturbances will affect our weather with chances for showers through Monday afternoon. Though some precipitation over the weekend may mmix from time to time with snow, sleet or light freezing rain, the majority of any frozen precipitation will be confined to the higher elevations above 2000 feet.

By Tuesday of next week condition improve with temperatures warming back to the low and mid 60’s for valley highs.
