Please call 434-361-1999 for reservations.
Returning to the Hamner Theater’s Cabaret series on Saturday, April 11, for his second appearance at this intimate venue, will be the Austin, TX-based singer/songwriter, Danny Schmidt. He will be accompanied & supported by Carrie Elkin, also based in Austin.

Danny Schmidt, singer, songwriter, guitarist & poet, has been building an enthusiastic following while simultaneously inspiring the admiration of his fellow artists and critical acclaim from industry professionals. It’s his songwriting which won him the prestigous Kerrville New Folk award, but it’s his intense live performances that leave listeners with a sense that each of his songs is necessary, plain and simple. His guitar work is effortless and sparkling, his arrangements are fresh and unpredictable, his voice ageless. Stylistically and musically, Danny’s writing spans an impressively diverse reach, from deeply-rooted Appalachian mountain gospel to haunted English balladry, from syncopated Piedmont country blues to vagabond 60’s protest folk-stumpery. In the words of Sing Out Magazine: “He is perhaps the best new songwriter we’ve heard in the last 15 years.”

Carrie Elkin has been making quite a buzz around the Austin scene with her highly spirited and spontaneous performances, singing songs described as warm, earthy, sweet-toned and quietly offbeat. You can listen to songs from her EP, The Jeopardy of Circumstance, online at sonicbids.com.

The Hamner Theatre Cabaret Performance Series offers great entertainment in a dinner club setting with fine wine and food. Doors open at 6:30pm, and the show begins at 7:30pm. Tickets, which include food, are $20 or 2 for $35, in advance (reservations required). For information, phone 434 361 1999 or visit www.hamnertheater.com. The Hamner Theater is a non-profit 501(c)(3) project of the Rockfish Valley Community Center in Nelson County.

Thick heavy fog greeted most folks this morning in Nelson County after a couple of days of rain. As the morning wears on, the fog will burn off and some sun will work in before another system develops by tonight bringing rain back in the forecast. Thanks Henri Weems for the photo this morning. Henri tells us: “This low lying fog expanded so that within a few minutes you could not even see the mountain.”

Montebello
Nelson County, Virginia

The volunteer firehouse at Montebello was filled with the smell of homemade baked goods, freshly brewed coffee, and all kinds of other goodies this past Thursday morning. It was the last of the Firehouse Cafe get togethers for the 2009 season. The informal meals are a way for folks to see one another and chat during the cold months of the year. Even a little colder up there in Montebello near the Blue Ridge Parkway! A very special thanks to Paulette Albright for sharing her photos with us!

The Firehouse Cafe is held the 2nd & 4th Thursdays in the months of Jan, Feb, and March.
