Afton, Virginia
Albemarle/Nelson County Line
It’s been one heck of a month for Ken and Yvonne Harris at amFOG up in Afton. As we first told you earlier today, they lost the huge barn on their orchard and greenhouse property. Just a couple of weeks ago they battled a huge blaze that burned up a lot of acreage but thankfully, spared the buildings. Ken and Yvonne aren’t just clients of ours, they are friends, and this is a huge loss, folks. The barn served as storage for lots of material used on the farm in the orchard and greenhouse operations.
The historic barn on fire as viewed from Route 151 just minutes after fire crews arrived on the scene.
Fire departments from all over the area responded to the blaze that was fanned by gusty southwesterly winds as high as 30 miles per hour at times.
Crews from Crozet and Wintergreen work to dump water into a temporary basin to fight the fire.
Ken and Yvonne bought the operation over 5 years ago and have spent the better part of that time renovating the very popular business right on the Nelson-Albemarle County Line. Just a year ago they built a new farm market just off of Route 151. They have raised both son Jay and daughter Olivia since their move here.
The picture says it all. The second floor and loft of the barn collapses as the fire burns.
Yvonne tells us she is not sure how the fire in the old barn started, but did say they thankfully have some insurance on the structure. How much it covered remains to be seen.
A nearby greenhouse was damaged but not totally destroyed. People were pitching in to help save what they could.
They also tell us in spite of the fire Sunday they will be open this week. “Maybe not Monday, but certainly in a day or two. The farm market is intact, and most of the spring operations can continue,” Yvonne said.

A familiar landmark to those turning onto Rt. 151 from Rt. 250 in Afton, the barn at amFOG caught fire Sunday afternoon. Fire crews from Nelson County, Albemarle and Crozet are among those responding to the blaze. The farm market and nursery is owned by Yvonne and Ken Harris; they have two children, Jay and Olivia. More as we have it …
Wintergreen Resort
Nelson County, Virginia
It was a crowded saloon (uh, ballroom) Saturday night up at Wintergreen Resort as sharp shooters and gamers, along with guys and gals put on their western best to raise money at this year’s Wintergreen Performing Arts’ Casino Night. Our Paul Purpura saddled up and grabbed these shots.
Before the Casino Night began, folks had a pre-party roundup at Pryor's Porch complete with wine, appetizers, and a live auction. The hands were going up as fast as they could during the live auction! This year's auction included some really nice items like a stay at a golf resort in Ireland, tickets to a Kennedy Center performance, a stay on historic St. Charles Avenue in New Orleans, a dinner for ten, and a one week cruise for two in either Alaska, New England, or Panama/Mexico.
This year’s grand prize was one week at the Wyndham Harbour Lights in downtown San Diego from September 5-12, 2009. Horton Plaza Mall is within 2 blocks; the historic Gaslamp Quarter features Victorian-style buildings with sidewalk cafes, fine art galleries, specialty shops and entertainment; the Sea Port Village has live entertainment, restaurants and beautiful views of San Diego Bay and Coronado Island. And this is all before the Casino Night really got started!
Each lucky guest received 10K in gaming money along with 5 stage prize tickets and a light buffet dinner.Games Saturday night included Texas Hold 'Em, Craps, Roulette, Black Jack & Horse Racing. I think I'l take that! Extras Saturday night also included great stage prizes, door prizes every hour, a 50/50 cash jar and more!
The money raised from this weekend’s event will be used to help fund Wintergreen Performing Arts. The 2009 season will get underway in just a few weeks. Click here for more over at WPA’s website.

Story via Nelson County Rotary Club
Recently at a regular meeting of the Nelson County Rotary Club the matching funds from a grant provided by Rotary International Foundation District 7570 was presented to Margaret Clair, Board Member of Rockfish Valley Community Center by President George Bonheyo. The local monies were part derived from the Nelson Folk Life Festival at Pharsalia. These funds will help to establish a community playground at the Rockfish Valley Community Center in Nelllysford, Va.
The Rotary Foundation’s programs are funded through voluntary contributions from Rotarians and others who believe in its mission. Their donations demonstrate their commitment to enhancing lives, creating greater understanding among nations, and advancing the quest for peace in the world.
Foundation program awards are distributed worldwide through the SHARE system. Contributions to The Rotary Foundation are transformed into Ambassadorial Scholarships, Group Study Exchanges, Matching Grants, and more.
At the end of every Rotary year, 50 percent of each district’s donations to the Annual Programs Fund are credited to their District Designated Fund (DDF); the other 50 percent is credited to the World Fund.
The Foundation uses the World Fund to pay for the worldwide programs available to all Rotary districts, regardless of their specific contributions. Districts use their DDF to fund the Foundation programs they participate in.
Because districts share in the decision-making process about program funding with the Trustees, every Rotarian has a voice in planning for the future. Every year, members of each district’s Rotary Foundation committee, in consultation with Rotarians in their district, decide how the SHARE DDF will be used. SHARE offers a wide variety of program options for districts to choose from.

The crews finished the Woodsmill 1 headend with the exception of 3 units this week. They also began hanging the CAUs for those that were late sign-ups. All units have been hung on Afton headends 1, 2 and 3 and Woodsmill headends 1 and 2.
Work continued this week on optimizing the networks that are complete with significant progress being made on all networks. IBEC has continued to turn on customers as their area of the network is brought on line. The number of regenerator units to which we have access increased by 72% and the number of CAUs by over 100%. The number of customers online increased by 60%.
Next week the crews will hang the last three units on Woodsmill 1 and that headend will be added to the headends we are optimizing. They will then begin to hang the remaining units on the Nellysford headend. There will also still be two crews doing work needed to optimize the headends already online. We will continue to contact customers as we believe their service should be available. Our Field Technician will continue to be available for in home appointments with any customer who needs help getting their modem connected properly.
If you receive a call from IBEC please return the call so that we can get you BPL service running.
If you are contacted by IBEC by telephone, please get back in touch with us, so that we can activate your modem and ensure that you have an optimized configuration. at 888-IBEC-BPL or 888-423-2275.
