Dr, Steve Schmitz (L) shortly after he joined Afton Family Medicine, along side the late Dr. Bob Raynor in the old clinic on Route 151. Today it’s the Rockfish Valley Inn. This photo was taken March 2, 2005.
Nelson County, Virginia
We were archiving some of our very early photos this morning and ran across some of these from 15 years ago when we first started the magazine. Dr. Steve Schmitz (our Ask The Doc columnist to this day) had recently joined the late Dr. Bob Raynor at Afton Family Medicine. Dr. Raynor originally opened the office many years earlier before Sentara MJH eventually took it over.
Dr. Steve Schmitz getting ready for a practice run back on March 2, 2005 just outside the old Afton Medicine Clinic.
Dr. Steve Schmitz is an avid runner and has actually competed in triathlons as well. This photo was from March 2, 2005 during a practice run.
Dr. Steve Schmitz left with Mandy Baker, RN at the old Afton Family Medicine Clinic back in September 2005. Mandy is still with the clinic today.
Neat to look back at the old photos!
We sure do miss Dr. Bob, he was a great and very kind man!

Update from Monday evening via David Johnson 6.1.20
“Just updating that Danny Johnson is out of surgery for today and back in ICU. They stabilized the arm for now and will follow up with more permanent repair later. The process took longer than expected today so they have decided to move his next surgery to Thursday to begin work on the leg in order to give him some recovery time. These first few procedures will be critical so continue to pray for a complete restoration of his arm and leg. The hospital is considering letting Cam Johnson come back for a visit with his dad on Thursday which is outside their current procedures so pray that will happen.
I will update FB as things change or new information comes to us so know that we are trying to keep everyone informed here on FB. Please know that text or messages to individual family members may not get a response as it is difficult to keep up with sometimes. We appreciate the words of encouragement and prayers in those private messages but the updates will be coming on FB as often as we can to reach everyone.”
Hearts are heavy and prayers are in full force this weekend as people all across Nelson and Central Virginia are hoping for the best. Lovingston Volunteer Fire & Rescue Chief Danny Johnson was involved in a very serious motorcycle accident on Saturday afternoon.
I’m grateful that so many people care about him. Danny is a good man and still needs all the good vibes and prayers we can get,” Assistant Chief Derek Kidd told us Sunday morning.
Chief Johnson was taken into surgery Saturday night and was out just after midnight Sunday morning. He’s been admitted to ICU and updates from the LVFD Facebook page indicate he’s got a long road to recovery.

National Weather Service Blacksburg VA
444 AM EDT Wed Apr 29 2020
…HEAVY RAINFALL EXPECTED THIS EVENING AND TONIGHT…
.A deep area of low pressure will move slowly from the Midwest
into the Ohio Valley through Thursday. In advance of this
developing weather system, strengthening southerly flow later
today and tonight will draw Gulf moisture well northward across
the eastern U.S. Strong dynamics will combine with the abundant
moisture to support showers and thunderstorms. The main concern
will come with a narrow, yet strong line of thunderstorms with
very heavy rainfall, expected to move across the entire forecast
area from west to east during the overnight hours. Total rainfall
amounts are 2-3 inches along and near the Blue Ridge to generally
1.5 to 2 inches elsewhere. The ground across the entire region is
saturated from recent and repeated rainfall during the last
several months. Additional heavy rainfall during a period of short
duration could cause flash flooding, especially in areas of steep
mountainous terrain. However, of greater concern is flooding of
area creeks, streams, and rivers.

Alleghany VA, Bath, Botetourt, Craig, Floyd, Giles,
Montgomery, Pulaski, Roanoke, and Rockbridge. In southeast
West Virginia, Eastern Greenbrier, Monroe, Summers, and
Western Greenbrier.
* From this evening through Thursday morning
* Scattered showers and thunderstorms developing in southwest
Virginia later this afternoon will spread northeast during the
evening. Locally heavy rainfall is possible with this activity.
Overnight, a near solid line of thunderstorms with very heavy
rainfall is expected to track across the region from west to
east. Rainfall amounts of 1 to 2 1/2 inches during the
afternoon and overnight hours could result in flooding and/or
flash flooding.
* Flooding will be possible in areas of heavier rainfall and where
storms repeatedly move across the same localities. Creeks,

be subject to flooding.
