NCL can confirm this Wednesday evening that state police and local Nelson County Sheriff Dept. officers are on the scene of a highly suspicious death in the Afton, Virginia area just north of Greenfield along Route 151. According to Nelson County, Virginia Sheriff David Brooks, an investigation is underway into the death of a 73 year-old woman living in the Rockfish River Elementary School/Falls’ Grocery area. Deputies were called to the scene after a neighbor found the woman dead in her home.

NCL can also confirm that the deceased elderly woman’s car is missing which escalates the suspicion of authorities that foul play was involved.

We continuing to follow this story and will have additional updates out shortly.

Many of you have seen Ben Hernandez’s beautiful photography right here on our NCL Web edition or in the printed magazine. Ben is a graduate of the prestigious Rocky Mountain School of Photography in Missoula, Montana. That’s where Ben met, Elizabeth Stone who teaches at the school. Elizabeth has a love for pets just like Ben. The two put their heads together and that’s how the local version of Small Lives including pets from the Nelson County Almost Home Pet Adoption Center was born.

Small Lives is a series of portraits of animals awaiting adoption. The project was founded by photographer Elizabeth Stone of the Rocky Mountain School of Photography (RMSP) in Missoula, Montana. The goal of the project is to raise awareness about the thousands of healthy, well-adjusted animals waiting for adoption, to encourage people to spay and neuter their own pets and adopt their next pet from a shelter or a rescue agency.

“In 2008, while I was attending RMSP, I learned about the project during one of Elizabeth’s courses. It didn’t take long before we teamed up together and brought Small Lives to Nelson County. We are also delighted that author Rita Mae Brown agreed to write the Introduction for us,” Ben says.

The books are available in several sizes; all signed by both Ben and Elizabeth. They can be purchased at the Animal House Ball on Saturday May 9th or by contacting Ben directly. All proceeds from sales of the books go to the Nelson County Humane Society. Available sizes and prices are 8×8 for $65 $59.95, 12×12 for $95 and Elizabeth’s very unique, limited edition, handmade version — which can be special ordered for $350.

You can reach Ben Hernandez to order Small Lives via his website by clicking here.

If you have been reading Nelson County Life’s printed edition or this web edition for any length of time, you’ve certainly seen the work of Paul Purpura over the years. Paul handles most everything at Wintergreen, but occasionally slips down to the valley and grabs shots as well. One of his favorite spots is at Lake Monacan in Stoney Creek. In the past day or so Paul grabbed these shots showing the dreary weather over the past week to 10 days. We couldn’t resist putting these in a regular front page post. They are simply too good to miss!

Over the past several weeks Paul has been experimenting with high definition (HD) photography. That’s why these images appear so vivid and 3 dimensional. He’s perfectly captured the mood of things lately in Central Virginia with all of the rainfall.

Paul, thank you for sharing these images, these are some of the best!

Five Area High School Graduates Earn
Electric Cooperative College Scholarships

Five high school students from Central Virginia have each earned college scholarships awarded by the Educational Scholarship Foundation of the Virginia, Maryland & Delaware Association of Electric Cooperatives (VMDAEC).

The recipients are:

Alicia Adams of Appomattox, a senior at Appomattox County High School and the daughter of Catherine Adams;

Alexandra LaRosa of Palmyra, a senior at Fluvanna County High School and the daughter of Darlene and Terrence LaRosa;

Rika Patterson of Gladstone, a senior at Nelson County High School and the daughter of Delores Patterson;

Kaylee Wallace of Palmyra, a senior at Fluvanna County High School and the daughter of Gina Nester; and

Christopher White of Appomattox, a senior at Appomattox County High School and the son of Kimberly White.

All of these students earned these scholarships based on a competitive screening process and were eligible because their parents are consumer-member of Central Virginia Electric Cooperative.

This year, the VMDAEC Educational Scholarship Foundation is awarding 39 $1,000 and nine $500 scholarships for a total of $43,500 – the largest dollar amount in the history of the Foundation. Scholarships are awarded to deserving students who live in areas served by electric cooperatives in Delaware, Maryland and Virginia and may used by the recipient for college tuition, fees and books.

Though it’s been nearly three decades since The Waltons television series was in broadcast, millions of people still watch reruns of the beloved program based on the experiences of Nelson native, Earl Hamner. Earl grew up in the eastern section of Nelson County in Schuyler, Virginia. The small mining town served as the inspiration for stories that put Earl on the map, and eventually on television.

Recently Earl launched his own website so folks could keep up with what’s going on in his life these days. The site can be found here at www.earlhamner.com Earl is 85 years old now, 86 in July, and lives on the west coast in California where he moved dozens of years ago to pursue work on television projects.

Over the years Earl has been so kind to write a few articles for us here at Nelson County Life. We stay in touch with Earl by telephone every few months. He will call us or we him to see how things are going. He often asks, “Have the leaves started coming out yet, or changing color? or ” Have you seen the Rockfish River lately, is it very full?” His heart is still here in Nelson. Earl is in good health for a man his age, and continues writing to this day.

A blog entry from a month or so ago when Earl was talking about a minor injury he was recovering from.

One of the warmest and most personal parts of his site is his blog named “You Me And The Lamp Post” where Earl will talk about what’s been going on in a way that viewers became accustomed to when he would narrate the intro and closing on The Waltons.

If you are a Waltons’ fan or simply want to keep up with Earl, this is a great site! Check it out!
