Today Nelson County Sheriff David Hill and Nelson County’s Commonwealth Attorney Daniel Rutherford confirmed that Alexis’ body has been found.
Verbatim press release from Nelson Sheriff David Hill:
After more than seven years of search efforts, the Nelson County Sheriff’s Office, the FBI’s Richmond Division, and the Virginia State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation’s Appomattox Field Office announce they have located and recovered the remains of missing 17-year old Alexis Tiara Murphy of Nelson County, Virginia.
Alexis went missing on August 3, 2013, after visiting a local gas station in Lovingston, Virginia. Local, state and federal law enforcement pursued multiple leads and conducted numerous searches, at the time, in an effort to locate Alexis. The searches have continued periodically since her disappearance in 2013, with law enforcement expanding the search area each time.
On December 3, 2020, remains were located on private property near Stagebridge Road, along Route 29 in Lovingston. The remains were transported to the Central District Office of the Chief Medical Examiner (OCME) in Richmond for positive identification. Positive identification was received from the OCME on February 5, 2021. With careful consideration for Alexis’ family being paramount, notification to the community was delayed to allow them time to grieve and make proper arrangements.
With the comprehensive investigation, successful prosecution by the Nelson County Commonwealth Attorney’s Office and the recovery of Alexis, this case is now no longer active.
Law enforcement did not work this investigation alone. We would like to thank Alexis’ family, friends, classmates, teammates and the community for their continued assistance and patience as we worked to find Alexis.
Alexis’ family has asked for privacy, and does not wish to speak to the media. They have provided the following statement:
“Our family is so grateful for the continuing love, support and prayers for Alexis and our family over the past 7 years. While we have been grieving the loss of Alexis since 2013, we remained hopeful that she would be found alive and well. Alexis was the fashionista, athlete and joker of our family; we were blessed to have loved her for 17 years and her memory will continue to live on through us all. Our family would like to extend a heartfelt thanks and sincere gratitude to the citizens of Nelson County, the FBI, the Virginia State Police, the Nelson County Sheriff’s Office and all of the search and rescue teams for your commitment and unwavering support to find Alexis. You all kept the promise made in 2013, to bring Alexis home!
During this time, we ask that you continue to lift our family up in prayer and in the words of Alexis, ‘Keep Hope Alive’.”
Respectfully,
Family of Alexis Murphy
Nelson County’s Commonwealth Attorney Rutherford also went on in his remarks to recognize and praise the former CA Anthony Martin who was in office during the murder and subsequent prosecution of Randy Taylor.
“I am grateful for the hard work accomplished in the continued search for Alexis. I also want to thank my predecessor Anthony Martin for all of his hard work getting justice for Alexis and her family.”
The Virginia Outdoors Foundation (VOF) today announced awards of $1,946,044 in grants for 33 local projects in 25 localities that create, expand and make more accessible public open space, including one project in Nelson County. The grants were awarded from VOF’s Preservation Trust Fund and its new Get Outdoors program. The latest round of awards emphasizes projects that serve high-need communities, especially communities that have been inadequately served, overlooked, or harmed by unfair zoning, housing, and land-use practices or other systemic discrimination.
“The COVID-19 pandemic has revealed a great deal about the importance of open space for not only our physical and mental health, but also for the strength of our communities,” said VOF Executive Director Brett Glymph. “We are pleased to be able to award these grants that will advance projects in communities all across the Commonwealth, resulting in greater, safer, and more equitable access to the outdoors for thousands of Virginians.”
Nelson County Parks and Recreation submitted an application for an easement acquisition to install and maintain a public boat take out and parking lot on a section of the Rockfish River. This will be the first public river access for the Rockfish River, but is also part of a larger blueway program that is planned for the Nelson County Wayside along Route 29 at Woods Mill. The department received a full award for the application of $60,000.
Claire Richardson, director of Nelson County Parks and Recreation notes, “We are thrilled to receive this funding and thankful to the Virginia Outdoors Foundation for sharing our vision and recognizing this need. Nelson County’s incredible amount of outdoor recreational assets benefit both local residents and tourists. Nelson County. Parks and Recreation staff are working to thoughtfully expand outdoor recreation opportunities and this is a positive step. We appreciate the private landowner’s support of the project and also the Virginia Department of Transportation’s assistance to date.”

Current forecasts indicate that most of the Commonwealth of Virginia will be covered by mixed precipitation at various times into early next week and the Lynchburg District of the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) is prepared to respond.
Rain, sleet, freezing rain and snow are forecast to occur during several winter storms. Crews will begin emergency operations tonight to deal with the first round of weather. They will push snow, as appropriate, and will apply chemicals and abrasives to help with melting and traction. After a lull Friday night, another round of precipitation, including possibly significant and dangerous ice, could move into the area on Saturday. A third storm may arrive Monday into Tuesday.
VDOT urges motorists to monitor local forecasts and to avoid travel during storms, as snow or ice on roadways makes travel hazardous. Those who must be on the road should reduce speed, increase following distance and use VDOT’s free 511 tools to find out about road conditions.
Crews will start their response efforts on primary routes, then shift to secondary roads and neighborhoods once the main roads are passable. They will treat roads with salt and sand to aid melting and improve traction.
The Lynchburg District includes the counties of Amherst, Appomattox, Buckingham,Campbell, Charlotte, Cumberland, Halifax, Nelson, Pittsylvania and Prince Edward.

It wasn’t quite the storm expected, but some folks still saw a respectable amount of snow by mid-morning Sunday. The more impressive amounts were north and east of Brents Gap in Nelson toward Afton and then east from there into Albemarle and points beyond.
Photo By Tommy Stafford : And for others, it was just a big letdown. This was in Bryant of Roseland in Nelson County where it was mainly a slushy mess. February 7, 2021
Generally amounts across the area were 1/2″ to 4-5″ as you moved northeast into counties like Warren and beyond.
Oddly, by Sunday afternoon we should see sunshine. There’s a hint at another shot at significant winter weather for the second half of the week. Unfortunately it could include significant icing.
VDOT LYNCHBURG Another round of winter weather is in the forecast and crews with the Lynchburg District of the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) are prepared to respond.
Because the storm is anticipated to start as rain no pretreatment of primary roads is currently taking place in the Lynchburg District; however, changes in the forecast are being monitored. In addition, crews are inspecting their trucks and other equipment, re-installing spreaders and plows, and loading truck beds with salt, sand or other materials in anticipation.
Currently, the following counties in the district are under a Winter Storm Watch from Saturday evening through Sunday morning with the possibility of heavy snow: Amherst, Appomattox, Buckingham, Campbell, Charlotte, Halifax, and Pittsylvania. A Winter Storm Watch means there is potential for significant snow, sleet or ice accumulations that may impact travel. Additional warnings/watches/advisories are possible. Travel, particularly during a storm, is not recommended.
VDOT urges motorists to monitor local forecasts and to avoid travel during the storm, as snow or ice on roadways makes travel hazardous. Those who must be on the road should reduce speed, increase following distance and use VDOT’s free 511 tools to find out about road conditions along the route.
Crews will work around the clock to clear roads, beginning with primary highways, then shifting to secondary roads and neighborhoods once the main roads are passable. VDOT snowplow operators and contract crews will treat roads with salt and sand to aid melting and improve traction. When the snow accumulates to about two inches, the plows will push the snow off the roadways.
Additional information about winter-weather preparations and response can be found at www.virginiadot.org/travel/snow.asp. Local updates are posted on Twitter @VaDOTLynchburg.
VDOT STAUNTON – Another round of winter weather is forecasted to move into the Shenandoah Valley late tonight and into Sunday, February 7. People are asked not to drive if possible. If travel is necessary, drivers are asked to give snow crews room to work. Several inches of snow are expected with heavy snow in the early morning hours. The Virginia Department of Transportation Staunton District will be pre-treating interstate roads with brine beginning on Saturday morning. Crews will be deployed overnight to begin plowing and treating roads as the snow begins.
Due to expected changing driving conditions throughout the Commonwealth of Virginia, it is advised to monitor weather forecasts for updated information before any travel is attempted
Road conditions and traffic cameras can be found on the VDOT 511 website athttp://www.511Virginia.org, Roads with snow conditions will be marked minor, moderate, severe or closed. For a text listing of winter weather road conditions go tohttp://www.511Virginia.org, look at the orange bar on the top of the page and click on “Text Views” and then click on “Road Condition Table”. VDOT CULPEPER — Crews in the Virginia Department of Transportation’s Culpeper District are closely monitoring the forecast and preparing for a fast-moving winter storm expected to arrive late Saturday into Sunday morning. VDOT urges motorists to pay attention to the forecast and to avoid traveling during the storm.
VDOT crews will report to work Saturday evening to complete preparations. Once precipitation begins falling, VDOT snowplow operators and contract crews will treat roads with salt and sand to aid melting and improve traction. If snow accumulates to about two inches, the plows will push the snow off the roadways.
Crews will work around the clock to clear roads, beginning with interstates and primary highways, then shifting to secondary roads and neighborhoods once the main roads are passable.
Those who must be on the road during the storm should reduce speed, increase following distance and use VDOT’s free 511 tools to find out about road conditions along the route.
