Morning Power Outage In Afton Cleared : CVEC Says Tree To Blame : 1.22.10

1

Afton
Nelson County, Virginia

Just before daylight Friday morning folks in Afton may have noticed their power out. Central Virginia Electric Coop (CVEC) quickly restored the power and it was back on before most folks ever left for work. “A tree fell into the line in the area of D’Ambola’s Restaurant, kicking off the line all the way back to the Martins Store substation. The crews responded and cleared the outage in two hours and fifteen minutes according to the dispatch records,” Greg Kelly with CVEC told us Friday morning.

As of 10:30 AM Friday morning that was the only known significant outage reported in Nelson.

Wintergreen Resort
Nelson County, Virginia

While temps in the valley regions of Nelson County have not hit the freezing mark over the past 24 hours, that’s a different story in the higher elevations in places such as Wintergreen, Love and Montebello. A1/4 to 1/2″ coating of ice is covering trees and power lines up there. Kim Smith up at Wintergreen Real Estate’s mountain office sent us the above photo showing the tree bending over under the weight of the ice.

Travel down from Devil’s Knob just a bit toward the Mountain Inn and the story is pretty much the same. Our Paul Purpura grabbed some random shots of the ice covering trees there. Cold!! Brrrrr!

Temps dropped as low as the middle 20's overnight but rebounded to near 30° by early Friday morning on the mountain.

Reports from Montebello sent to our via our Facebook page say it’s very icy there as well!

As of Friday morning, A Winter Storm Watch continues across Nelson and much of Central Virginia along and near the BRP. Temps in the valley regions of Nelson had not fallen to the freezing mark by midnight leaving only rain and sleet in the lower elevations. At elevations above 1500 feet in locations like Montebello, Love and Wintergreen Resort, temps have been in the mid 20’s rising to near 30° by daybreak. Freezing rain has been falling there from time to time. However as of this morning, the predicted winter storm has created very little fanfare. It is hard to imagine the current warning will not be canceled or downgraded shortly since temps all across the region are above freezing, but as of 8AM the warning is still in effect by the NWS.

Nelson County Public Schools are operating on a 2 hour delayed schedule as a precaution.
