Nelson County, Virginia
What a day! Just a month after a 2 foot snowstorm, people all across Nelson have been dealing with massive flooding. If you weren’t directly affected by it, chances are you had to take a detour because of it.

Above are the rainfall totals Monday morning as the rain was winding down. Devils Knob reported the most with 5.63 inches, topping out at 5.95 inches just before 10AM for that 24 hour period.

Lots of water literally has to go under the bridge before this will be a memory. The James River near Bent Creek in the southern part of the county is predicted to rise about 6 feet above flood stage by Tuesday afternoon before starting a slow fall.

Unfortunately, we must now turn attention to a developing winter storm and very cold temperatures by the end of the week.

Updates on that in Tommy’s Audio Weather later Monday night.

John Lloyd emailed us saying; “Wow! The rivers/creeks are the highest that I’ve seen — lived in Nelson since May 1998. If you could get some pictures of the creek beside Route 6 East (about 1/4 mile from Route 151) and the flood plain just south of Virginia Lane (by Tuckahoe Antique Mall). Never seen that much water in those places. Thanks for the great coverage, as usual.”
Editor’s note, those pics are coming up shortly! Thanks for the info John!

Nelson County, Virginia
As forecast, major pounding heavy rains moved into Nelson County Sunday night. The absolute worst appears to be in the far SE section of Nelson in the community of Gladstone. Many people there have been evacuated from their homes.

Nelson County Public Schools have been closed due to the flooding.

In Greenfield, route 635 was impassable just east of Route 151 due to a swollen Rockfish River covering the road.

In Massies Mill, Nelson Sheriff, David Brooks, says flooding is a concern as well.

Kevin Rose in Rockfish, VA reported to us this morning; “The Rockfish River at Rockfish, Va is now over coming its bank. I just went outside and it is barely over the bank. This means that the river could be close to the road, if not over it in low lying areas. I’ve seen worse in 10 years, but not in the last 4 years… We are now getting wind and hopefully the last rain band. Be careful everybody!”

Jennifer Anderson Smith wrote us on our Facebook page to say; “I hear rt 250 up Afton Mt has a lot of water and gravel around the train trestle and Afton Terrace. Cars are spinning and losing traction. Be careful!”

Helen Dodge via our FB page; “”Crabtree Falls Hwy & Cub Creek have some areas flooded.”

If you click on the image above it, gives a summary of the rainfall amounts from across Nelson. The highest looks to be at Devils Knob where just under 6″ of rain had fallen by 6:30 am Monday.

Many more updates late this morning and if you have flooding pic, send them on to us!

Nelson County Sheriff, David Brooks, says the search for a wanted man in the south end of the county has been called off early Sunday afternoon. “We’ve been looking for Jason Todd Cash, a white male in his mid 30’s who ran from one of our officers after he stopped him for a traffic violation Sunday morning,” Sheriff Brooks tells NCL.

Sheriff Brooks says since they know who the suspect is and have the car he was driving impounded, they will be issuing felony warrants for Cash and continue their hunt. Heavy fog and rain limited the search which extended along the Tye River and in the vicinity of Black Eagle Farm in Piney River. By 12:30PM the search was called off once the trail had become cold.

“He’ll be charged with felony eluding police, felony assault, felony assault with a vehicle, felony property damage, and driving on a revoked license,” Sheriff Brooks continued. The sheriff called later in the afternoon to say that an attempted murder to a police office charge had also been added to the list.

Cash’s last known address was in the Lowesville area, but Sheriff Brooks says they cannot be exactly sure where Cash is living now since the car he was driving was registered in Buckingham County.

Previous Original Post @ 11:56 AM
The Nelson County Sheriff, his deputies, and a member of the Virginia State Police are searching for a man this hour who bailed from his car after being stopped by a Nelson County deputy Sunday morning on a traffic stop. “The deputy stopped him on 29 South not too far from Saunders’ Construction company near the old motel. The person got out of the car and ran behind the motel into a wooded area,” says Nelson County Sheriff, David Brooks.

Sheriff Brooks went on to say that officers know who the suspect is, and was recently released from the department of corrections, though the sheriff believes he was not in jail for a violent crime.

The search area had expanded to include portions of Route 56 West from U.S. 29 around noon. Search dogs from the VSP and other agencies were also being brought in to assist in the search.

More as we have it.
